In the June 2015 issue, we featured the Cantare Choir as they
prepared to join forces with Greater Manchester Police Male Choir
for an exciting concert. Since then, the Choir have had a very
successful year and were awarded Honours in each category they
entered in the recent Festival of Performing Arts. They were
invited to sing at the selected performers’ concert at the Town
Hall on 8th May where they were presented with the Jim Noble
Trophy for Outstanding Performance.
You may remember the article which local historian, Gary
Heywood-Everett, wrote on the Norden Riviera as well as the
Rochdale Pioneers of Workers Education. Gary has kindly offered
to write a regular ‘From the Archives’ feature in our magazines
and this month has included a fascinating piece on the Carlton
Ballroom which was such a well know landmark in the town
back in the 30’s and 40’s.
Until next month….
Hypno-Weight Loss Therapy
Make a difference to your life in just 6 sessions…Hypno-Weight Loss Therapy
uses a number of techniques to help you change the way in which you eat.
Through the use of hypnosis and other therapy techniques you can ditch the
diets and instead, listen to your body and its signals telling you when you are
full and when you are hungry. As part of the process, suggestions relating to
healthy eating, motivation to exercise, eating smaller portions, support for
emotional eating, speeding up your metabolism and increasing your
confidence and self-esteem are made through hypnosis. This is a new way of
living rather than another fad diet. For further details please contact:
Therapy versus Anti-Depressants
Why is there more of a stigma connected to having therapy than taking Anti-depressants? There are
situations in life where these pills can be beneficial for a short time. But if you could only experience what my
clients experience after only 3 sessions, I am sure that 75% of you would never chose the medication route. So why do some of us
need either? There are many reasons, however, I believe we live in a quick fix society. If we want something we want it now, we
don’t want to wait for rewards. Society has created unrealistic expectations within us. They tell us “you don’t have the money – we
will lend it to you, buy it now” “you want to be thin – take these pills”, etc. What happens to us then is that we have to live with
the consequences of our choices. Huge Credit Card bills . A bank loan to pay on top of your mortgage. A chaotic mind caused by the
stimulants in the slimming pills. Everything that we expect and chose to have right now has a huge consequence on us as human
beings. We start to feel trapped, lost, and helpless. We now can’t afford to pay for the important things, we can’t think straight
because of the stimulants. A huge void opens up inside of us, we feel inadequate, useless, we feel we are not good enough, beautiful
enough, rich enough, etc. so that thing that you wanted, needed, had to have in that short space of time, has now made you feel
a lot worse than you did before you had it. Coaching, Counselling, NLP allow you the freedom to choose to be strong willed enough
to work things through the hard way. Yes it is a harder choice to work at loving yourself, learning how to be and feel confident,
letting go of things that no longer serve you, forgiving people for things that happened long ago, using your brain instead of letting
your brain use you !!! The fantastic thing about finding the right Counsellor or Life Coach is then deciding what amazing changes
you would like to see in your life. You become stronger, more able to deal with family feuds, relationships breakdowns, children’s
tantrums, have work life balance and have less stress. The choices are yours.
Choose therapy today – Live the Life you always dreamed of.
At Chippendale Hearing Services, we pride ourselves on
providing the highest standards of professional audiological
care, personal attention and continued aftercare. Both Patricia
Chippendale and Sandra Neumann have a wealth of experience
spanning over 35 years, having worked in local NHS audiology
departments, social services, the private sector and a national
charity for deaf people.
WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU HEAR.
Time for understanding
Most people ignore their ears until something changes. Explaining how
hearing loss or ringing in the ears can affect each person is complex
and needs specialist professional guidance. At Chippendale Hearing our
customers range from 16 to 98 years young and frequently comment
on how we gave them time to explain their own situation and needs by
asking various questions, thus allowing each person to make informed
choices.
Here’s a comment from someone who recently visited us:
“I have recently suffered from hearing problems as well as tinnitus in
my left ear which means that I have a constant ringing. Having
always had perfectly good hearing, it was a very stressful and
Chippendale Hearing Services
frightening time for me and the treatment which I received from the
NHS did nothing to put my mind at rest. It was very much a ‘one in
one out’ approach and I came away feeling very upset and isolated.
However my visits to both Pat and Sandra at Chippendale Hearing
were a completely different experience. They took the time to listen
to me and were extremely caring and helpful in their approach. They
talked me through what to expect during the hearing test and after
this they carefully explained what was happening in my ear and what
I could expect in the future. I didn’t feel as isolated and I know that
they are always at the end of the phone should I need to speak to
them or see them again”.
Time to get the best
We offer a holistic approach and a one stop shop service of information,
hearing tests and/or specialist equipment and ear moulds for protection
against noise - customers comment that they absolutely love the ACS
motorcyclist moulds and musician moulds with appropriate filters.
As specialist professionals we are expanding our service and will soon
be opening additional consulting rooms on the first floor of 675
Here at Triad Fabrications we have been helping people to transform their gardens for over 35 years. We have a
magnificent reputation of always providing top quality products, efficiency and a friendly down to earth approach to
business. Based in Shawclough we are easily accessible for consultations regarding your bespoke designer gates and
railings. The majority of our customers like to choose from our extensive range of designs whilst others prefer to put
their own stamp on their property. All gates and railings are made on our premises by our design team to ensure the
highest quality or materials and workmanship.
We are now also specialising in security grills as unfortunately in this day and age it is very necessary for us all to be aware of the
security and safety in and around our homes. There is a now great demand for window and door grills that can look elegant and
will enable you to feel safe and secure in your home.
Our electronic gates with or without intercoms enable you to control who enters your grounds. They look beautiful and they keep out
all unwanted guests and animals. These can be operated from inside the house with an intercom screen so that you can see who is
calling.
Balustrades and handrails can be made to be pleasing to the eye whilst enabling safe passageway in awkward areas such as
staircases and areas around pools and ponds.
Triad also work together with lots of commercial properties by Supplying Security Barriers and Bollards for Petrol Stations, Car Parks,
Supermarkets and hotels.
We work with Schools and Nurseries providing them with Safe Playground equipment and car park facilities.
Carnival
Saturday 18th June - make sure you're
in Norden Village to join in the
celebrations for this year's Carnival. The
theme this year is 'Circus' - and the
organisers are expecting the procession
to be the biggest and best - with lots
of Circus masters, clowns, and perhaps
some lion tamers. There's been an
unprecedented number of stalls this
year. We've got everything from
locally made treats to candles and
great gift ideas. Remember the
Carnival falls on the 18th June, the
Saturday before Father's Day so it'll
be ideal to pick up those last minute
treats for your Dad.
The Parade leaves Caldershaw School at
1pm and after the parade has passed
through the village, there'll be plenty of
entertainment at Norden Community
School. There'll be a range of funfair rides
as well as live music, too.
So don't forget whether you are in the
parade or watching, please get into the
spirit of the Parade and dress up in this
year's theme of 'Circus'. In the past we've
had local pubs, all the schools, charities
and local businesses getting involved.
Every charitable group will get a
donation as a thank you for being part
of the parade. There's a deadline to
join so please contact us before 1st June if you're interested.
Please email nordencarnival@sky.com or tweet us @NordenCarnival.
We look forward to seeing everyone on the 18th June! The sun will be there, so make sure you are, too.
Best wishes, Norden Carnival Committee
TREE-MENDOUS EFFORT
BEGINS TO BEAR FRUIT!
A community orchard has just been planted on the award-winning Roch Valley Outdoor Learning Site. The site, which is situated
on Roch Valley Way, is used by five local schools that make up the Roch Valley Educational Partnership. The orchard received
funding via the Bamford Ward Councillors and Roy Down, outdoor learning co-ordinator for the site said: "without the support of
Councillors Ian Duckworth, Pat Sullivan and Jane Gartside, many of the improvements on the site would not have been possible.
Their recent backing of the community orchard is yet another example of the great work they do. Apple, pear and plum trees
have been planted on the site and also on Mandale Park as at least half of this area comes under the Bamford Ward." The Roch
Valley Site has been short listed for several national and regional awards. The Partnership is currently the holder of the North
West In Bloom's, Young In Bloom Champion Award and the site is also used by the
Countryside Rangers, Groundwork and Community Payback. Future plans are to
extend the wildflower planting programme as well as the habitat creation and to
continue to support Rochdale In Bloom. The Partnership has another site, in
Springfield Park, which contains a small community tree nursery, and was recently
visited by Bamford St Michaels Beavers who planted lots of small trees. Roy said:
"the Beaver group, led by Lisa Fern and Vicky Law, was fantastic and made a real
positive contribution to the tree nursery, I was very impressed by the Beavers
enthusiasm and I can't wait to work with them again.".
The Queen’s Favourite scones
Recipe from Heather Williams
Method
1. Sieve flour, salt and baking powder into a bowl and rub in the margarine
or butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
2. Add the sugar and sultanas 3. Make a well in the centre of the mixture
and crack in the egg. Add some of the milk and mix together to form a soft
but not sticky dough, with a round bladed knife. Add more milk if necessary.
4. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently. Roll or press out
until 2cm thick and cut into rounds with a metal cutter, this will make a
maximum of 8 scones.
5. Place on a floured baking tray and brush with milk. Bake at 220C, gas 7
for 10 to 12 minutes until well risen and golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.
Serve split in half and buttered.
You can leave out the sultanas and serve with strawberries and whipped
double cream for Afternoon Tea
Ingredients
8ozs/ 250g self-raising flour
1 level teaspoon baking powder
Pinch salt
2 ozs/ 50g margarine or butter
Sudden Bridge and Bury Trust Road
Last months trip down Halifax Road interested me to investigate other old Turnpike roads in the
Rochdale area and today I investigate the Sudden Bridge and Bury Trust road. The road came into
existence in 1797 and was 4 miles and 6 furlongs long. It replaced a winding road that went from Sudden Bridge (now Sudden),
and followed the present Marland Old Road to the hamlet of Marland
then Marland Fold and across fields to France Hill and Moss House were
it met the old Heywood to Castleton road known as Wilderness Lane and
right to Captain Fold. A large embankment carried the new road from
Moss Side to Dumfries then a shallow cutting to Captain Fold.
The new road had bars where travellers paid dues to use the road and
these were situated at Rycroft near the present Little Nook farm and at
Wham Bar where Bury New Road meets Bury Old Road (this was
replaced a few yards towards Heywood when Bury Old Road formally
Heap Lane was modernised).
It may be imagined that in those far off days travelling along these
roads would be peaceful and hassle free. However this seems to have
been far from the case. The following are from court cases brought in
Heywood against those infringing the Turnpike rules.
A carter was found to be asleep whilst on the road. The magistrate
asked him if he had been asleep. 'well not asleep exactly I just sort of
had my eyes closed' he replied to laughter from the court.
A man was found not to have his horse under control. When brought to
court he stated that he was subject to fits. He was fined and the judge
noted that if he was subject to fits he should not be in control of a horse.
Another was fined for leaving an unattended horse and cart. He told the
magistrate he had called for a meal at the pub and left a man in charge
of the horse. He was not aware that the man had then gone into the tap
room for a drink.
A man was accused of loitering on the footpath and causing an
obstruction. He stated that he was talking to friends. The magistrate
reprimanded him and said he should have moved when the policeman
told him to do so. You CANNOT argue with a policeman he was told.
Well you couldn't make it up could you.
I have walked all this road but have found none of the marked
milestones although a boundary stone without its original metal plate
remains near the cemetery, and a couple of bench marks are visible on
old stone walls.
An interesting artifact on the road is the World War 2 pillbox built into
the embankment near Little Nook Farm. A few years ago I had the
privilege to talk to a lady who during the war had been a searchlight
operator in the ATS. She informed me that this post was used for shelter
for those operating a searchlight when bombs were falling.
Villagers Of Norden Will You Go The
Extra Mile For In Bloom?
This year, once again , Norden will play a key
part in the efforts of Rochdale Township In
Bloom, when the Township competes in RHS
Britain In Bloom. Judging Day for this prestigious
event will take place in the last few days of July
Norden Village will host the start of the Judging
Route. There are a number of criteria against which
our entry is assessed, but many of them are
concerned with the presentation of our Village. Our
entry will be judged on issues such as the
presentation of residential properties and business
premises , the cleanliness of streets and the state of
preservation of local heritage features.
Norden has made an excellent start with it`s efforts
for 2016: NEEVA has once again provided an excellent array of hanging
baskets to enhance the whole of Edenfield Road. Paul Ellison and his Team
at the Jubilee Park are sprucing up the area around the bus terminus and
the uniformed organisations( Scouts, Guides and Brownies ) are continuing
the refurbishment of their outdoor activity area next to St, Paul`s Parish
Hall. Work is well under way, once again at Moss Row Community
Allotments.
For 2016`s event, the Rochdale Township In Bloom Team needs
you help.......
If you live on Edenfield Road or one of the side -roads adjacent (or if you
own business premises there ) can you spare some time to enhance the
presentation of your Building ? Floral displays outside domestic
residences are a particular favourite with the Judges .
Will you please help us show your Village at it`s best for
Judging Day?
For further information about how you can help, please contact
BIRTLE TRUST
This organisation started forty years ago now and, to a greater and lesser extent, I have always been
involved in it. (I was a child when I first became Chairman you understand). It was originally called “The
Castle Hill Residents Association” and was formed in 1976 to fight the reopening of the quarry which is
situated just behind the Church. The battle was won but we had to fund raise to pay a barrister as it went to appeal. After a short quiet
spell, another owner applied to open the quarry again, so we changed the name of our organisation to “The Birtle Trust” to include all of Birtle
and started the fight once more. This time it was a much harder struggle but the residents prevailed and we eventually had the Quarry downgraded
to a derelict quarry which makes it very difficult for it to be reopened. The Trust doesn’t just try to
prevent inappropriate development in the area, but it is a very fragile piece of our industrial heritage
and residents, including the farmers, feel very strongly that we need to keep the area safe. Of
course this is not always popular but if I had wanted to be popular I would never have become a
Councillor. People love a trip out to Birtle and we have some great hostelries and they all benefit
from being part of this lovely area and we welcome them. I feel the Trust’s main achievement is
the planting of the The Birtle Wood. If you drive to the top of Castle Hill Road, straight ahead of
you before you turn left or right, is our beautiful wood. It is on Bircle (the old spelling of Birtle)
Church Land, so we worked together with the Church to plant the Wood. We received grants from
various organisations, advice from all and sundry so we could plant appropriate trees and bushes,
and indeed plants, for the area. And it has grown and developed and is simply lovely. And it is
open for all to walk round and enjoy. We have a lovely memorial bench and also a plateau with
a specially planted tree in memory of the young people who died so tragically over twenty years
ago in the helicopter crash in Anglesy. The only survivor was a member of our congregation and
they were all local children. Some of the trees are planted in memory of loved ones and for a
small outlay anyone could buy a tree or a bush and have the name inscribed in our speciql book
I think the wood is getting very full now but if you are interested in planting your own memorial
tree, please enquire. One of our founder members, Peter Lee, was the spearhead of planting in
Birtle. He died a few years ago, but during the years he was with
us he organised planting of the corners of some of the fields to
further enrich the area. Some of the landowners and farmers were
really happy to be involved in this project and it is lovely to watch
all the trees grow. As Chairman of the Trust at the moment, I realised
that we are coming up to our AGM and some of our Committee
members have been part of the Committee since day one. There
have been many changes in Birtle, and new people coming to live
with us to enjoy the area. We need this to keep Birtle alive, but we have a duty to our children to preserve this important area of great heritage
so it is there for another forty years for us all to learn from, explore and enjoy.
Councillor Patricia Sullivan, Chairman Birtle Trust
Heywood 1940s Event 2016
The blast tape is going up, the "camo" nets are being aired and the
sandbags filled... yes you've guessed its time for the town to turn the
clocks back 70 years to be iconic era that was the 1940s. There will be
lots of boys toys, activities and entertainment for the citizens of
Heywood of all ages. Planes such as the legendary Spitfire and
Hurricane together with Heavy artillery,
vintage cars and buses will be sited
around the town on the day.
The 40's were not just about war although it did
take up half the decade. There were also
many changes to fashion, fun and
entertainment too. Our event also
celebrates these changes and they are
reflected in the costumes and
performances that will be seen around
the town throughout the event
There will be live entertainment in and
around the Market all day, an outdoor
concert outside St Lukes and a tea
dance at St James Church, Dance
demonstrations outside Tillys Team Rooms. Hill Street car park
will feature a military encampment together with a BBQ at
Poole's Butcher.
This year also sees the centenary of the Battle of the Somme
and to commemorate the event we will feature an interactive
exhibit together with the installation of two benches during a service
at the Memorial Gardens.
Weather permitting we should also see a fly past by a vintage Dakota
Transport aircraft to add even more atmosphere to what has
historically become the most successful day in the towns events
calendar by far.
Make sure you look out for posters, flyers and the highly popular
souvenir handbook to keep up to date with times and venues of all events and
other attractions that are being added daily. Tell your family and friends, they wont be
disappointed !!! Mike Higgs – Trader/Co-ordinator
Mille - Feuille of Asparagus and Mushrooms
The joys of spring – English asparagus is in
sheer abundance right now so go raid your
local supermarkets. In this recipe I have
served it with some sautéed mushrooms but
alternatively replace with some spinach or
even wild garlic at this time of year.
For the Pastry 250g Puff Pastry
Flour for rolling
1 Egg yolk
For the Filling
25g Butter
1 Small onion – peeled and finely chopped
1 Clove garlic – peeled and finely chopped
225g Button mushrooms quartered
1 Bunch Asparagus Blanched
For the Sauce
50ml Dry white wine
50ml White wine vinegar
50ml Whipping cream
115g Chilled butter – cubed
1 Tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
1 Tablespoon chopped from chives
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method
Pre heat the oven to 190C.
Roll out the pastry to a square about 20 x 20cm and 1 cm thick.
Cut it into 4 equal triangler pieces. Put the pastry on a baking
sheet, brush the top of each piece with the yolk and mark a
criss cross design on the top with a small knife. Bake for 10 –
15 minutes or until well risen and golden brown. Remove from
the oven and leave aside until you are ready to use.
Now make the filling. In a small saucepan heat the butter, then
put in the onion and garlic and cook until they have softened.
Throw in the mushrooms and continue to fry until they have
cooked through, which should take no more than 10 minutes.
Remove the pan from the heat.
Now for the sauce. Heat a small pan, pour in the white wine
and wine vinegar and reduce by half. Pour in the cream and
again reduce by half. You should have about 6 tablespoons of
liquid left at this stage.
Now, over a low heat, whisk in the chilled butter, bit by bit,
until it has melted and is thoroughly mixed. Do not allow this
mixture to boil or the sauce will lose its creaminess and
become thin and clear. Add the chives and parsley to the sauce,
taste and season, then remove the pan from the heat.
Slice the cooked puff pastry in half horizontally. Briefly reheat
the vegetables and asparagus then divide them between each
pastry base. Spoon the sauce over the vegetables the put on
the pastry lids, Serve straight away.
Healthwatch Rochdale
The Health and Social Care system is, at the best of times, complicated. I
suspect most people think of it as GPs, Hospitals and care homes but in
truth it is much more than that. What is a clinical commissioning group,
what are commissioners, what role has the Council got, what services are
out there, what does health and social care integration mean? Getting your
head round it is hard which makes getting your voice heard can be
challenging.
I am vice-chair of an independent organisation set up to be the borough’s health and social
care consumer champion. We are here to gather and represent the views of you, the public,
to make sure you get the best out of the services available to you.
We challenge services to improve today and help shape them for tomorrow as well. But
we can only improve services with your input. Without your views, we cannot represent
you and make sure residents’ voices are heard. We are here to stand up for you and your
family.
We have a hard working and dedicated team, experts in engaging with the public and
analysing the information get in.
There has been a lot of activity and achievements in the last couple of months including
our Meet the GPs events where Healthwatch Rochdale set up question and answer
sessions with the local NHS decision makers. The sessions also looked at how the
devolution of powers to Greater Manchester from government is transforming health and
social care services. You can see everything we are doing by logging on to our website
http://www.healthwatchrochdale.org.uk/ ; signing up to our newsletter or following us on
twitter and Facebook.
So please, come and share your feedback with us. We are here to listen and then
challenge. Let’s work together to make sure the health and social care system serving
Rochdale, Heywood and Middleton is the best it can be. We are based at The Lodge,
Arrow Mill Queensway, Rochdale OL11 2YW. Office opening times are Monday to
Friday 10.00am - 4.00pm. You can reach us on the telephone by calling 01706 249 575.
CANTARE CHOIR
Rochdale’s Female Voice Choir
From left to right: Jackie Holt, Secretary
and Margaret Raynor, Chair, receiving the
Jim Noble Trophy on behalf of the Choir
It's been a busy twelve
months for the members
of Cantare, R. Rochdale's
foremost female voice
choir, who we last
featured in June 2015.
An exciting joint concert last
July with Greater Manchester
Police Male Voice Choir at the
RNCM, which showcased the
world premiere of a specially
commissioned piece, “Visions
of Paradise” by Chris Roe,
was followed in December
by an atmospheric Carols
by Candlelight at St
Edmund's Church,
Falinge, helping to raise
funds for the Churches
Conservation Trust. In
Michael Betteridge, the choir were proud to enter three choral classes in Rochdale
Festival of Performing Arts and delighted not only to be awarded Honours in each
category, but also to be presented with the Jim Noble Trophy for Outstanding
Performance and invited to sing at the selected performers' concert at the Town
Hall on 8th May. What a privilege and a pleasure! If you'd like to hear the choir in
action, then the next opportunity is on Saturday 25th June, 7.30pm, at St
Edmund's Church, when they'll be presenting "Birthdays" - a very special
celebratory evening. Her Majesty the Queen is not the only person to be marking a
significant birthday in 2016! When it was realised that several members of the choir
would also be celebrating extra special dates this year, the idea of the “Birthdays”
concert was born. Expect a varied programme of favourite songs chosen by the
birthday girls, plus scones, strawberries and fizz for a “picnic in the pews”, all in the
magnificent setting of Rochdale’s Gothic-revival gem – a perfect summer evening’s
entertainment. Tickets can be bought at the door or are available in advance from
Rochdale Tourist Information Centre (Touchstones) or from Sarina Ellis (01706
642471) priced £9, including summery refreshments. Accompanied children are
admitted free. The choir is a friendly group and its members enjoy socialising
together, as well as singing. In recent years, they've travelled to Bath to take part in
the Mid Somerset Festival. However, this summer, in July, the choir are off to
Oxford for a musical weekend. They'll relax, and take in the sights of this beautiful
city. However, the main focus of their trip will be a joint concert with Blackbird
Leys Choir, originally formed as "Ivor's Choir" in 2006 for Channel Five's
documentary series "The Singing Estate".
The Carlton
A
Ballroom
The 1930’s was a decade of change in the United Kingdom and Rochdale was no
exception. Cinema attendance was booming and dancing was all the rage with
dances at the Pioneers Ballroom, occasionally at the Town Hall and many others in
many church halls and school rooms.
In August 1935 there was a dance at the Ambulance Drill Hall featuring Tee Varnum and his band (admission
2/-), at the Kings Hall in Littleborough or at the Lakeside Pavilion at Hollingworth Lake. It was a decade
of widening cultural expectations and the town contributed to this by opening, in 1934, one of the best
dance halls in the North West – the Carlton on Great George Street, just off Drake Street, the Observer
noting at the time that ‘Rochdale will possess a ballroom the modernity .. unsurpassed by any other dance
hall in the provinces.’
The building, which previously had been an old wool scouring mill belonging to Kelsall & Kemp, was
redesigned by J E Stott of Todmorden, the architects who also developed the Riviera complex in Norden.
The front of the mill was pulled down and a façade and entrance re-designed in a minimal Art Deco style
typical of the 1930’s.
Embassy Amusements Limited took on the management and refurnished the Carlton in the latest style.
From the entrance there was a box office, cloakrooms and a café with an ‘up-to-date Milk Bar’ open to the
public all day. On the upper floor on three sides there was a balcony which accommodated 250 to 300
people at small tables whilst below there was a dance
floor (120 feet by 50 feet) of rubber-cushioned maple at
the head of which was a stage, the curved back of which
was decorated with gold leaf and edged by huge grey
curtains. On the day of the opening, these were pulled
back by uniformed page boys (white gloves and little
pill-box hats) to reveal a band playing for the first dance.
Though whist drives and private functions took place there, dancing was the main thing with bands such
as Roy Fox and Joe Loss came up from London in the mid 1940’s to appear at the Carlton’s ‘Saturday Night
at the Palais,’ appearing on-stage at 11.00pm and playing (air raids permitted) until 2.00am. Local bands
were popular too with the George Roberts Band, Bob Sharples, Geoff Love and the famous Freddie Platt
Band.
After World War II dancing fell somewhat from favour, replaced to some extent in the 1950’s by the
popularity of television although when Mecca bought the Carlton in 1956 they tried to keep the dancing
tradition going. By the 1960’s however, it had a dual use as a
dance and Bingo hall, eventually by the 1970’s only being used
for the latter. In 1989 the Carlton closed following a fire and
after some years of neglect it looked like the end. However, in
1995 there was a revival with The New Carlton Ballroom, later
the place becoming the ‘Liquid Rock’ nightclub but the place
was eventually closed following an alleged shooting incident,
a sad end to a great Rochdale institution.
In 2007 the Carlton was demolished and is now a car park.
If you have any memories of The Carlton, I’d be delighted to hear from you and add
them to a growing Rochdale archive on the subject.
CUT YOUR
ELECTRICITY BILLS
THE ELECTRICITY
Established over 25 years ago Electronica
Systems are renewable energy specialists
and amongst the market leaders, providing
bespoke services to both the domestic and
commercial markets.
All the products that we supply are high
efficiency providing significant environmental
and economical benefits to the property
owner.
Our Solar Panels are the best performing due
to the fact that they are supplied credible,
ethical and established companies.
Solar PV panels are amongst the most effective
and popular means of renewable energy
generation available and due to their simplicity,
durability and efficiency – are being installed in
ever increasing volumes. Even on a cloudy day
they can convert the light into substantial
amounts of electricity which can be used in the
home – or exported to the national grid if not
used. Electricity exported to the grid is charted
by an export meter which ensures that the
home owner is paid for the power they sell.
PV Solar panel systems are also a guaranteed
means of income thanks to the Feed in Tariff
Scheme which pays homeowners a set rate for
every unit of electricity they produce (whether
it is used or sold back to the grid).
Solar PV Panels can also be installed on
commercial and industrial premises. Depending
upon the size and generation capabilities of
the PV panels, a company can greatly reduce its
energy costs whilst also generating
supplementary revenue through the Feed in
Tariff Scheme. In addition to the financial
benefits, the installation of a solar PV system
also helps the organization get a step closer to
attaining carbon neutrality.
