Some key facts about the company
• y Consciously make yourself speak slowly and clearly
• y Listen, Listen and Listen
• y Don’t try to remember things – write them down
• y Never use slang or swear
• y DON’T PANIC!
• y If It’s going badly:
Don’t try to recover
Get off the call as quickly as you can
Do not repeat your name
Do not agree, or attempt to agree, a next step
Afterwards, concentrate on what went well (e.g. you got to the person you wanted)
Take a break for 24 hours and then ……
CALL AGAIN (it will be a whole new start!!!)
‘Just remember you haven’t blown your chance, you’ve only blown the call – there
can always be another call!’
‘If there was one piece of advice I could give it would be this:
‘THERE IS ONE CALL THAT IS GUARANTEED TO FAIL – THAT IS THE CALL YOU
DON’T MAKE.
‘Just by making the call you have increased your chances. If it goes wrong you just try again later.’
If the person at the other end of the line doesn’t know who you are
and isn’t going to remember you if you mess things up, how can
you humiliate yourself?
If you know that the worst that can possibly happen is that you
are going to wait a while and then try again, then the fear of
the unknown has disappeared too!
We know this is a very simplistic approach to mastering your
fears but for many, many people it does work. If you understand
that your call may be the most important thing in the world to
YOU when you are about to make it, but of very little consequence
to the receiver, your fear and nerves will reduce.
