I would like to take this opportunity to
thank you for your help and support over
pleasure and a privilege to be the
Neighbourhood Inspector for Heywood.
Inspector Andy Fern is taking my place. I wish him well and hope
that Heywood continues to grow in stature. Thank you.
CRIME PREVENTION ADVICE
There are still occasional issues with houses being burgled. Here
are a few tips to help you keep your houses secure:
l Fences can be improved by topping them with
timber trellis, especially if the trellis is used to carry a
thorny plant. Rear and side fences can normally be
up to 2 meters high before planning permission
would be required. Refrain from advising man-made
injurious toppings
l Side gates must be locked with a padlock or
Mortice deadlock plus additional bolts. 2 meters is
the ideal height, which could be obtained by topping
the gate(s) with trellis
l Garages and sheds are often full of expensive tools
to steal or use to break into the house.
l Do not leave a garage or garden shed unlocked,
especially if it has a connecting door to the house.
l Consider lockable steel boxes or anchor posts fitted
to the floor to secure tools and equipment.
l For extra security, replace the screws in external
hinges of your shed or garage side-door with 'clutchhead'
screws (also known as 'anti-tamper' or 'coffin'
screws).
l Install a battery or mains-powered shed alarm,
available from all good DIY stores at a reasonable
price.
l Lay crunchy gravel on the approach to your house
if possible. Thieves hate drawing attention to
themselves by making a noise.
l Your wheelie bin could be used as a climbing aid
or even as a means of transporting stolen property.
l Secure it by padlocking it to a wall bracket or
drainpipe or position it away from the accessible
windows
l And in the warmer weather, most importantly,
keep your doors and windows locked.
