Welcome to our June issue. 

One very important date for your diary is the annual Scarecrow 

competition which this year will take place from Saturday 25th June 

until Sunday 3rd July. Entry forms are now available online and at 

various locations around Whitworth and deadline for entries is Friday 

10th June. This is a great community event and Councillor David 

Chorlton encourages as many local people as possible to get involved. 

Full details to be found on page 36. 

In the June 2015 issue, we featured the Cantare Choir as they prepared 

to join forces with Greater Manchester Police Male Choir for an exciting 

concert. Since then, the Choir have had a very successful year and were 

awarded Honours in each category they entered in the recent Festival 

of Performing Arts. They were invited to sing at the selected performers’ 

concert at the Town Hall on 8th May where they were presented with 

the Jim Noble Trophy for Outstanding Performance. 

You may remember the article which local historian, Gary Heywood- 

Everett, wrote on the Norden Riviera as well as the Rochdale Pioneers 

of Workers Education. Gary has kindly offered to write a regular ‘From 

the Archives’ feature in our magazines and this month has included a 

fascinating piece on the Carlton Ballroom which was such a well know 

landmark in the town back in the 30’s and 40’s.

BURGLARY ADVICE 

Please ensure your house doors and windows are locked, 

especially now the finer weather has arrived. Do not 

leave keys in your doors as this will encourage a thief 

into your home - you will have increased the chances to 

successfully gain entry by half. Keep keys and valuables 

hidden from view at all times and take upstairs with you 

each night before you retire. Most thieves are 

opportunists scanning areas constantly in the hope you 

become lapse – they will steal from you and don’t care 

about your age, your ability or your disability. You know 

what fits and what doesn’t fit in your vicinity, report 

anything or anyone acting suspiciously and think security 

at all times, make it difficult for them.

Officers have been diverted into your area targeting high 

concentration burglary locations which has been a fantastic 

success - burglary to dwellings in this period have reduced by a 

staggering 70% plus since last month! There has been no 

recorded theft from motor vehicles during this period

The next Shawclough/Healey Local Area Forum will be held on Thursday 8th 

September 2016, 6.30pm at Syke Methodist Church, Syke Road, Rochdale.

The Syke Walk and Talk Group meet every Monday at 1.00 pm and Friday

hot drinks and socialising after the walks. There are 2 levels on the walk on 

Monday, a high quick walk and a slower one. There are also three levels on a 

Friday. A high fast walk, an intermediate walk and a slower one if needed. 

So there is something to suit everyone and all abilities. The Syke Walk and 

Talk group also meet on Tuesday at 10am from outside the Doctors Surgery 

at the Cutgate shopping precinct. 

Rochdale Inner Wheel Club – 4th Wednesday each Month 

Rochdale Inner Wheel Club is a women's group meeting on 4th Wednesday 

of each month at 7pm.They have regular speakers and also raise funds for

An event not to be missed!! Come along and join in the fun and help 

celebrate this popular annual event which is now in it’s 48th year. There will 

be a procession from Newhey to Milnrow followed by a fete with stalls and 

activities. Milnrow Brass Band will lead the parade, with the Mayor and 

Mayoress and the Carnival Queens. Entry to the park is free where there will 

be top notch live music and a funfair that caters for all ages. There will also 

be paintball, crazy golf, a variety of stalls, hot and cold food and a DJ for the

Friends of Rochdale Art Gallery, Touchstones, The Esplanade 

Rochdale – Tuesday 14th June 

For many years the Friends have been helping the Art Gallery to conserve and 

acquire paintings for the Collection. Talks by invited speakers about historic 

and contemporary art and craft are held most months with the occasional trip 

to visit other art collections.On Tuesday 14th June, Hannah Leighton Boyce 

will talk about her recent exhibition ‘instruments of industry’at Touchstones 

which responded to collections of handtools from the museum’s archive.

Norden Carnival – 18th June 

The preparations for this year's Carnival are coming together as everyone gets 

into the 'Circus' theme. The Carnival falls on the 18th June, the Saturday 

before Father's Day so it'll be ideal to pick up those last minute treats for 

your Dad. There'll be plenty of entertainment at Norden School after the 

parade has passed through the village. There'll be a range of funfair rides as 

well as live music, too. We're really interested in hearing from anyone 

interested in joining the parade. There's no fee to enter and local charities 

and community groups are given a donation each year. We ask that each 

group get into the spirit of the Parade and dress up in this year's theme of 

'Circus'. In the past we've had local pubs, all the schools, charities and local 

businesses getting involved. The parade has been getting better and better 

each year - we're sure this year will exceed all expectations. If you're

Whitworth gears up for 2016’s Scarecrow Festival – 

Sunday 3rd July 

The Whitworth Scarecrow Festival, now in its sixth year, will take place from 

Saturday 25 June – Sunday 3 July 2016. Entry forms are now available 

online and at various locations around Whitworth, and the deadline for 

entries is Friday 10 June.Entry forms are now available from the offices of 

Whitworth Town Council, the Riverside, UBS (699 Market Street) and 

Whitworth Post Office on Market Street. An entry form is also available for 

download from the Whitworth Town Council website at 

www.whitworth.gov.uk. All entries must be received by 10 June in order to 

qualify for the Festival and be included on the Scarecrow Trail map. Entry 

costs £1 per scarecrow display and the Festival is open to all homes, 

organisations and businesses in Whitworth. A map (trail) of all entries will 

be produced and entrants will be asked to display their scarecrow(s) from 

Saturday 25 June – Sunday 3 July in a prominent position at their home or 

business (front garden or window, end of drive etc) to allow the judging to 

take place and for people to come and marvel at their creativity. For more

Rochdale’s feel good main stage line up is ‘Boomin’ 

Rock and roll band Boomin will be playing the main stage at Rochdale Feel 

Good Festival this summer. The Wigan based trio who describe their sound 

as ‘fun, epic rock and roll’ will take to the main stage by the town hall on 

Saturday 20 August, during the council run event - the biggest free music 

and food festival in the north west.Boomin, famed for their extravagant live 

shows, have been together for over 10 years. They take well known hits and 

play them with their own inimitable style, blending classic rock with modern 

chart music plus a stack of their own original material and a touch of 

anarchy! Regional finalists of the coveted ‘Hard Rock Rising’ competition in 

2013, the band have already supported acts including The Script, McFly, N- 

Dubz and Scouting for Girls. They’ve played some of the UK’s biggest 

arenas as well as collaborating with Newton Faulkner. The lads released 

their debut Album ‘Original Junkie’ in 2012. Rory, vocalist and bass player 

in the band says they are looking forward to the show:“We’ve had some 

truly great nights in Rochdale. Playing to 5,000 at the Feel Good Festival 

will be superb. We'll be bringing our own Chelsea Dagger, so get ready to 

party!" Boomin will be joined by previously announced headliner The 

Fratellis alongside The Twisted Dolls and The Bright Black, plus more to be 

announced.Rochdale Feel Good Festival returns on Friday 19 and Saturday 

20 August, for another showcase of entertainment, food and culture. The 

festival includes live music across indoor venues, a main stage sponsored by 

The Flying Horse Hotel against the backdrop of the town hall, and Stage 2 - 

the community stage. Chefs and food producers will host live cooking 

demonstrations throughout and the festival will also include the popular 

food market. More acts will be announced this month.The summer festival is 

funded by Rochdale Borough Council together with sponsorship from local 

businesses.

The Carlton 

A 

Ballroom 

The 1930’s was a decade of change in the United Kingdom and Rochdale was no 

exception. Cinema attendance was booming and dancing was all the rage with 

dances at the Pioneers Ballroom, occasionally at the Town Hall and many others in 

many church halls and school rooms. 

In August 1935 there was a dance at the Ambulance Drill Hall featuring Tee Varnum and his band (admission 

2/-), at the Kings Hall in Littleborough or at the Lakeside Pavilion at Hollingworth Lake. It was a decade 

of widening cultural expectations and the town contributed to this by opening, in 1934, one of the best 

dance halls in the North West – the Carlton on Great George Street, just off Drake Street, the Observer 

noting at the time that ‘Rochdale will possess a ballroom the modernity .. unsurpassed by any other dance 

hall in the provinces.’ 

The building, which previously had been an old wool scouring mill belonging to Kelsall & Kemp, was 

redesigned by J E Stott of Todmorden, the architects who also developed the Riviera complex in Norden. 

The front of the mill was pulled down and a façade and entrance re-designed in a minimal Art Deco style 

typical of the 1930’s. 

Embassy Amusements Limited took on the management and refurnished the Carlton in the latest style. 

From the entrance there was a box office, cloakrooms and a café with an ‘up-to-date Milk Bar’ open to the 

public all day. On the upper floor on three sides there was a balcony which accommodated 250 to 300 


people at small tables whilst below there was a dance 

floor (120 feet by 50 feet) of rubber-cushioned maple at 

the head of which was a stage, the curved back of which 

was decorated with gold leaf and edged by huge grey 

curtains. On the day of the opening, these were pulled 

back by uniformed page boys (white gloves and little 

pill-box hats) to reveal a band playing for the first dance. 

Though whist drives and private functions took place there, dancing was the main thing with bands such 

as Roy Fox and Joe Loss came up from London in the mid 1940’s to appear at the Carlton’s ‘Saturday Night 

at the Palais,’ appearing on-stage at 11.00pm and playing (air raids permitted) until 2.00am. Local bands 

were popular too with the George Roberts Band, Bob Sharples, Geoff Love and the famous Freddie Platt 

Band. 

After World War II dancing fell somewhat from favour, replaced to some extent in the 1950’s by the 

popularity of television although when Mecca bought the Carlton in 1956 they tried to keep the dancing 

tradition going. By the 1960’s however, it had a dual use as a 

dance and Bingo hall, eventually by the 1970’s only being used 

for the latter. In 1989 the Carlton closed following a fire and 

after some years of neglect it looked like the end. However, in 

1995 there was a revival with The New Carlton Ballroom, later 

the place becoming the ‘Liquid Rock’ nightclub but the place 

was eventually closed following an alleged shooting incident, 

a sad end to a great Rochdale institution. 

In 2007 the Carlton was demolished and is now a car park.

featured in June 2015. 

An exciting joint concert last 

July with Greater Manchester 

Police Male Voice Choir at the 

RNCM, which showcased the 

world premiere of a specially 

commissioned piece, “Visions 

of Paradise” by Chris Roe, 

was followed in December 

by an atmospheric Carols 

by Candlelight at St 

Edmund's Church, 

Falinge, helping to raise 

funds for the Churches 

Conservation Trust. In 

March, with their 

Musical Director, 


Michael Betteridge, the choir were proud to enter three choral classes in Rochdale 

Festival of Performing Arts and delighted not only to be awarded Honours in each 

category, but also to be presented with the Jim Noble Trophy for Outstanding 

Performance and invited to sing at the selected performers' concert at the Town 

Hall on 8th May. What a privilege and a pleasure! If you'd like to hear the choir in 

action, then the next opportunity is on Saturday 25th June, 7.30pm, at St 

Edmund's Church, when they'll be presenting "Birthdays" - a very special 

celebratory evening. Her Majesty the Queen is not the only person to be marking a 

significant birthday in 2016! When it was realised that several members of the choir 

would also be celebrating extra special dates this year, the idea of the “Birthdays” 

concert was born. Expect a varied programme of favourite songs chosen by the 

birthday girls, plus scones, strawberries and fizz for a “picnic in the pews”, all in the 

magnificent setting of Rochdale’s Gothic-revival gem – a perfect summer evening’s 

entertainment. Tickets can be bought at the door or are available in advance from 

Rochdale Tourist Information Centre (Touchstones) or from Sarina Ellis (01706 

642471) priced £9, including summery refreshments. Accompanied children are 

admitted free. The choir is a friendly group and its members enjoy socialising 

together, as well as singing. In recent years, they've travelled to Bath to take part in 

the Mid Somerset Festival. However, this summer, in July, the choir are off to 

Oxford for a musical weekend. They'll relax, and take in the sights of this beautiful 

city. However, the main focus of their trip will be a joint concert with Blackbird 

Leys Choir, originally formed as "Ivor's Choir" in 2006 for Channel Five's 

documentary series "The Singing Estate".

WHITWORTH GEARS UP FOR 2016’S 

SCARECROW FESTIVAL 

The Whitworth Scarecrow Festival, now in its sixth year, will take place from Saturday 25 June – 

Sunday 3 July 2016. Entry forms are now available online and at various locations around 

Whitworth, and the deadline for entries is Friday 10 June. 

Councillor David Chorlton, chair of the Whitworth Tourism and 

Leisure Committee, which organises the festival, says: “We’ve 

had all manner of entries over the last five years and we can’t 

wait to see what the community comes up with this year. I 

would like to encourage everyone in Whitworth to really get 

behind the Festival again and let’s see the town covered in 

displays. They don’t have to be all singing all dancing – get 

your kids involved and let your imagination run wild! Anyone 

who wants to view the displays will be able to download or 

collect a trail map a week before the start of the Festival, 

which details the locations of all the displays.” 

This year, the Festival will include a competition element, 

and members of the public will act as the judges. 

Entry forms are now available from the offices of Whitworth Town Council, the 

Riverside, UBS (699 Market Street) and Whitworth Post Office on Market Street. 

An entry form is also available for download from the Whitworth Town Council 

website at www.whitworth.gov.uk. All entries must be received by 10 June in order 

to qualify for the Festival and be included on the Scarecrow Trail map. 

Entry costs £1 per scarecrow display and the Festival is open to all homes, 

organisations and businesses in Whitworth. A map (trail) of all entries will be 

produced and entrants will be asked to display their scarecrow(s) from Saturday 

25 June – Sunday 3 July in a prominent position at 

their home or business (front garden or window, end of 

drive etc) to allow the judging to take place and for 

people to come and marvel at their creativity.
