PROGRAMME O-RINGEN SÄLEN 2016
5
A boost for O-Ringen!
It’s time, at last!
After several years of preparation, O-Ringen
is returning to Dalarna and the mountains of
Sälen. Dreams - as in dream orienteering, dream
accommodation, dream terrain – are flowing
right through the 52nd edition of the event and
this is the 6th time Dalarna is organising.
Dream team 2016 – a reception with
heart
O-Ringen is organized each year thanks to
voluntary sports clubs. The work to host an
O-Ringen goes on for days, months and years,
engaging many different people, who together
form a fascinating team. The organizing
team in 2016 consists of 17 different clubs
from across nearly all of Dalarna. These clubs
span 330 km from north to south, what a challenge!
The fact alone that so many clubs want
to work together towards a joint goal, Dream
O-Ringen A-Z
Address
O-Ringen 2016, Sälen
E-mail: info@oringen.se
Arrival
O-Ringen Square is located at Lindvallen, next
to Experium. Signed from RV 66. When you arrive
at O-Ringen, please follow the instructions
of parking officials.
AXA Youth Relay
The AXA Youth Relay will be at O-Ringen
Square at Lindvallen and starts at 18:00 after
the opening ceremony.
Bussing
Each arena is accessed by bus. Please see p34.
No buses operate in the evening.
Bus tickets
No bus tickets required, bus fares are included
in your entry fee and accompanying passengers
travel free.
In as far as possible, buses travel to a timetable
with five buses in each convoy. The preliminary
interval between each convoy is 5-10 minutes.
The last bus in each convoy is animal-free
and will be accessible for pushchairs and
wheelchairs. These buses will have a low floor
and bags must be taken on the bus. In other
buses, luggage can be placed in separate storage
compartments.
Assistants will be available to help with organisation,
pushchairs, loading etc.
Bus parking (club buses)
Information is available at the competition office
O-Ringen, is positive for the development of
orienteering and future events in the area.
The entire O-Ringen team for 2016 is overjoyed
that so many people want to come and
experience this fantastic festival with us. There
will definitely be one new record, for mountain
orienteering at an O-Ringen event, when
4 Days will be held mostly on open mountain
terrain. In other words, everything is set up for
an experience beyond the ordinary. Now it’s
up to us organizers to do everything we can
to ensure your visit to Sälen, Dalarna is unforgettable.
Take the bus – easier for us
In order to give you, the participants, the best
terrain Sälen can offer, we have two arenas,
Högfjällshotellet and Lindvallen. Our challenge
is the transport.
WE might as well to say it at once, without
at O-Ringen Square. Club buses over 3.5 tonnes
park ing special parking places. There will be no
separate signing for club buses.
Cafe
At the main arenas there will be several kiosks
and at O-Ringen Square there will be cafes
such as Wayne’s Coffee.
Camping
Camping is supplied by O-Ringen at Kläppen
and Tandådalen. For questions regarding operation
and maintenance, please contact the
camping offices.
Campervans
Pitches/day parking for campervans is at the
bus stop “Kläppen” only. Signed from RV 66 in
Kläppen.
You travel buy bus from there. Campervans
are not permitted at ordinary car parks.
Childcare
On each day there will be childcare for children
aged 3-8 between 7:00 and 16:00. Register
via Eventor or at the competition centre
at O-Ringen Square. Price per day is 130 SEK,
which can be paid at the competition office at
the arena or any kiosk at the arena.
Church
Tandådalen and Sälen’s mountain churches
are open 10:00-17:0. Tandådalen church sells
coffee and bread and Sälen church has simple
catering.
• Tuesday 26/7 Service at Tandådalen mountain
church 19:00
mincing words. It’s very important that you follow
instructions for traffic and buses, leave the
car and take the bus, otherwise it will be congested
and there will be a long way to walk.
This year’s O-Ringen will attract more participants
than it has for many years. So there will
be much more pressure than usual on the few
roads in the Sälen area. Furthermore, there is
no parking available for Days 1-3, and very limited
parking on Days 4-5. From a road safety
perspective we also advise against walking,
cycling or roller skiing on RV 66, the mountain
road between Sälen and Hundfjället, during
O-Ringen week.
The trend continues – the records
are within reach
At the time of writing, I can say that there are
more entries than for many years and it’s predicted
that this year’s event could be just as
big if not bigger than the last time O-Ringen
came to Sälen, in 2008. We’ve seen once again
that a ”comfortable” O-Ringen with accommodation
in huts and hotels combined with
mountain orienteering is popular with orienteers.
Personally, I’m immensely glad about the
interest in Sälen but I’m just as glad about the
great interest for Swedish orienteering in general.
It’s extremely pleasing that we, Dalarna,
can go ahead and lead the way and maybe,
maybe, maybe beat the record from 1985.
Experience Dalarna – the activity
day is time for activities or explore
new attractions
Did you know that Dalarna is Sweden’s fourth
largest tourist area and northern Europe’s
• Wednesday 27/7 Concert in Sälen 19:00
• Thursday 28/7 Concert at Tandådalen
mountain church
• Friday 29/7 Concert in Sälen mountain
church
Come and try PreO
Between 10:00 and 12:00 on the activity day
on 27 July, you can come and try PreO at the
Day 2 arena at Hundfjället, using the Day 2
courses. Open for all and free of charge.
Competition Office
At O-Ringen Square and at each arena. Help
with registration, changes and other things
affecting your competitions. Sales of training
maps, bus tickets, party tickets etc. You can
also find general information about O-Ringen,
interpretation and lost property here.
Cycling and cycle parking
Parking for bikes is adjacent to the arenas, at
O-Ringen Square and at the bus stops. Cycling
in O-Ringen Square is not permitted. For road
biggest winter destination. Here you can go
to concerts, lie on a sandy beach or walk in
the mountains – there are so many possibilities!
Why not take the chance to experience
Dalarna culture by visiting World Heritage Sites
and artists’ homes, going to art exhibitions and
looking round forges and potteries, buy traditional
craftwork and new design. One tip is to
drop by O-Ringen Square and get inspired in
the ”Dalamontern”. The large range of attractions,
activities and sights to see means that
there’s something for everyone.
A big thank you – to everyone who
has made this event possible
Without our partners and landowners, it would
never have been possible to organize O-Ringen.
We are very thankful and happy that you
want to be present and work with O-Ringen
2016 in Sälen. I’d like to give a special thanks
to Malung Sälen Municipality, whose support
ensured that the event would be possible and
to Skistar Sälen, whose lease of buildings and
land has enabled the best possible conditions
for the event.
Finally, we wish you all a very warm welcome
to Sälen and good luck in the forest.
Each district or “national team” may enter a
maximum of two teams. Combination teams
in place all week for anyone wanting to ride
the courses at another time, without timing.
There are a limited number of map boards
to borrow if you do not have your own.
We will have instructions at the start to help
and inform you.
O-Ringen Challenge
”Tough running, easy orienteering,”
sums up the Challenge classes at
O-Ringen.
These are the classes for endurance athletes
who prefer running to difficult orienteering,
but who would like to combine the challenge
of both. The controls are relatively far apart
and are close to clear handrails.
The difficulty level is Yellow, which means
that these classes are suitable for relative beginners.
Classes
There are 4 Challenge classes to choose from:
Women and Men, 5 and 10 km. You can
register on the day, though this will mean a
higher fee for late entry. If you register on the
day, it is better value to register for Open 12, a
10 km open class with the same characteristics
as the Challenge 10km. You can read more
about this under ”O-Ringen Open”. Challenge
classes are held on the same days and in the
same terrain as O-Ringen, but with a slightly
different programme.
Registration fees
Registration on the day:
Up to 20 years: 1280 SEK
21 years and older: 2675 SEK
Start
Challenge classes use the “Tork/SCA” start
There is an open start on Days 1 and 3 between
8.30–13.30, a mass start on Days 2 and 4 and a
chasing start on Day 5.
Procedure for mass starts on Days 2 and 4
Runners gather at the start around 10-15 minutes
before the start and enter the lane for their class.
SI cards will be cleared and checked here.
When you clear your card, start officials will
check that you have come forward at the correct
time and that you have the correct SI card;
please see ”Checking SI cards”
under ”Start procedure for timed start classes,
Days 1–4” in the Competition Information.
After clearing and checking, continue to
your loose control descriptions, which are also
printed on the map.
For other start procedures, please read
”Start” in the Competition Information.
Start times on Day 5
The leader of each class starts as follows:
Challenge Women 10 08.35
Challenge Men 10 09.00
Challenge Women 5 10.40
Challenge Men 5 11.29
Advice for beginners
Orienteering is much easier when you do it
right from the beginning than if you make a
mistake and have to relocate in the forest. It
makes things easier when you always keep
track of where you are. One trick is to put your
thumb on the map where you last looked at
it. Holding the map orientated correctly is also
important. If you have your map lined up with
your compass and hold your thumb where
you are, the terrain matched up with the map
and you’ll run in the right direction. All the text
on the map is aligned with north and there are
lines on the map pointing north to help you.
O-Ringen Open
O-Ringen Open is for anyone who
wants to try orienteering and take
part in one or more days of the
orienteering festival at O-Ringen. In
Open classes, you can register and
choose a course on the day.
This year there are 13 different courses to
choose from, ranging from an easy option
to something really tough and everything in
between. You can also register for one of six
Open classes in MtbO, or one of two classes
in PreO.
Registration
You can register for one or more days at the
competition office at O-Ringen Square or
at the arena for each day on Days 1-3, at the
Open tent. There, you will find guides to help
you choose the right course for you.
On Days 4 and 5, all registration is at the
ordinary competition office. When you register,
you will receive a race number showing a
partner logo, which corresponds to the start
used by your class and the lane you should
use when you run into the finish. The number
should be visible on your chest and fastened
with 4 safety pins, which you can bring yourself
or collect when you register.
Elite information
O-Ringen Sälen 2016 will offer real
orienteering in mountain terrain
for the elite classes. The classes
D21 Elite and H21 Elite also feature
a sprint race at O-Ringen Square
in Lindvallen on Tuesday evening.
Expect thousands of spectators at
one of the most watched orienteering
races of the year! The final day
of competition for all elite classes,
with a chasing start, will be held in
tough and demanding Dala terrain.
Many of Sweden’s World Championships team
are planning to attend O-Ringen to help prepare
for the World Championships in Strömstad/Tanum
in Sälen and there will be a tight
battle for the prize money in the senior elite
classes, D21 Elite and H21 Elite. O-Ringen has
also attracted strong start fields in the junior
elite classes. We’ll be seeing many JWOC athletes
on the startline.
Programme
booklet.
Opening hours for the Open tent at the Arena
are 7.30-13.00
Start times for Open classes: 8.30–13.30
Electronic punching
All classes use the SportIdent electronic punching
system. If you have your own SI card, you
can use this and register the card when you
register for the event, otherwise you can hire a
card when you register. Please note! You cannot
borrow any SI card that will be used or has been
used by anyone else during the week.
Once the card is registered, regardless of the
day, it becomes attached to that person for the
week. If you’re unsure of whether a card is attached
to anyone, you can go to the competition
office at O-Ringen Square to check the card.
If you hire a card, it is attached to you for all
the days on which you want to use it. So you
cannot lend it to other runners. After your last
day, even if you only participated on one day,
please return the SI card to the dedicated container
after you finish.
Registration fees
Accepted payment methods are cash in SEK,
bank cards and Swish.
Price:
Young people up to 20 years: 140 SEK
21 years and older: 295 SEK
SI card hire: 70 SEK. Unreturned SI cards are
debited at 600 SEK.
Procedures
Once you have entered, go to the start shown
15.00 on Saturday 23 July. No reserves will be
appointed to the class if you withdraw later
than this.
To be added from the reserve list, the runner
on the reserve list must have registered their
interest to elit@oringen.se by 15.00 on 23 July
at the latest.
Elite Sprint Invitation
The mountain sprint will be held on
the evening of 26 July in Lindvallen.
This is the third race for the senior
elite classes and spectators can follow
the competition from the arena
at Lindvallen.
The course setter is Domnarvets’ international
runner Emma Johansson and she has the following
comments about her task. ”The goal
was to set sprint courses that I would enjoy
myself, with a possibility of a great backdrop
and a big audience. I hope that as many people
as possible can come to Lindvallen on Tuesday
evening. The O-Ringen sprint at Högfjället
in 2008 was in fact my World Cup debut and I
have many good memories from that evening.
It was an awesome moment to arrive at the
start and see huge sea of spectators down
on the slalom hill before running off into the
mountain birches.”
Competition rules
The Swedish Orienteering Federation’s competition
rules 22/02/2016 apply. Please pay
particular attention to:
• In Rörbäcksnäs it is only permitted to cycle on
paths and roads marked on the map and gravel
and tarmac surfaces. It is not permitted to
cycle or run in the forest or by the side of paths
or roads, or on open (yellow) areas. Keep to the
paths and roads marked on the map!
• Competitors must have their bike with them
at all time, for example it is not permitted to
leave the bike and run to a control, punch
and run back to the bike, even if this would
be quicker.
• Punching system: SportIdent’s electronic
punching system will be used. SI cards version
5-11 can be used.
• Competitors must have their SI card with
them for the duration of the competition,
but it may not be fixed to the bike.
• Many of the paths are narrow and there is
a risk of collision. Please look out for other
competitors and keep to the right - if you
can, let other riders know you are coming!
• There are some larger roads in the competition
area, which will be passed by all competitors.
• Be careful! Keep to the right and follow marshalls’
instuctions.
• The competition area encompasses the
village of Rörbäcksnäs and certain roadsa
nd paths will be out of bounds. They will b
markd on the map with red crosses across
the symbol and in the terrain with blue and
yellow tape across the path/road. Please respect
the out of bounds paths and be courteous
to local residents!
• Race numbers must be attached to the
front of bikes
• Equipment requirements: No e-bikes, helmets
must be worn. Otherwise no clothing
restrictions.
• All competitors are called up 2 min before
their start and receive the map 1 min before
their start.
• Maps are printed on waterproof paper.
• Control codes are overprinted next to control
numbers. Otherwise there are no control
descriptions.
• Hired SI cards can be collected at the competition
office at O-Ringen Square, or at the
area on the day. Hired SI cards must be returned
after the finish. Please see “Rules for
SI cards” elsewhere in this programme.
PROGRAMME O-RINGEN SÄLEN 2016
15
Welcome to Miniknat
Orienteering School
Stage 1 - Malung-Sälen Stage
There will be a Miniknat (string
course) at each arena, on each
day. A short course where the
very youngest runners can follow
a taped route all the way, with a
different theme on each day. Each
runner gets a race number, a map
and a small prize at the finish. On
the course, the children punch each
control with an SI card.
Each day has a different theme, which is reflected
in the taped routes, controls and activities
on the course. You can also meet Ringo
the elk on each day. Everyone can go at their
own pace and parents are responsible for their
children out on the course.
Themes for each day
Day 1: Summer in the mountains
Day 2: Dalarna
Day 3: Winter in the mountains
Day 4: Forest animals
Day 5: Elves and trolls
Location
Each day, the string course will be in an area of
forest next to the arena. Look out for signs or
look at the arena map.
SportIdent
In order to avoid queues developing, please
bring your own SI card or a parent’s SI card.
There will also be some SI cards available for
hire.
Price
If you know that you are going to do the string
course every day (5 days), we recommend that
you register for the whole week at (180 SEK)
at the competition office. Pre-entered runners
have their own start lane to help avoid queues
developing.
The string course costs 60 SEK per day if you
register on the day. You can register at the start
of the string course by paying either in cash or
with a card.
Opening hours
The string course is open from 8:30 to 14:30.
Have you never orienteered before,
but would like to try it? Or have you
orienteered before but feel like you
need to refresh your orienteering
skills a bit? No matter what you
level is at the moment, the Orienteering
School has the time and the
inclination to help everyone! You
decide how much help you would
like, but we hope that after visiting
us, you want and dare to go out
into the forest on an orienteering
course.
At the Orienteering School, we’ll go through
the basics of orienteering and what happens
at orienteering competitions. We’ll teach you
what’s on the map and how to use a compass
to navigate round the forest. We’ll take walks
with a map to see how the map shows different
features in the terrain. You can also test
our of our easier courses around the competition
area. You can run or walk the courses
alone, with a friend or with one of us from the
Orienteering School.
If you feel ready after that, you can go out
onto an Open course. We’ll help you choose
the right course for you. We also have helpers
at the start to guide you through the start
procedure and make sure you set off on the
right track to the first control. Towards the
end of the day, you’ll have the chance to run
an Open course with one of the leaders at the
Orienteering School. If you have run an Open
course, please come to us afterwrds and tell us
how it went! We might even be able to give
you some tips for next time.
The Orienteering School has a tent at the
arena on each day and we are open throughout
the competition day, so you can come to
us when it suits you. You can find us by looking
out for the Orienteering School signs. The Orienteering
School is open for everyone aged 9
or over and is free of charge.
While you’re orienteering, your children
are very welcome to our childcare,
which will be available at both
arenas. Our aim is that children and
parents can feel secure and that
children will enjoy themselves and
have fun in the Dala mountains..
Registration
If your child has not been registered via Eventor,
you can buy a ticket at the kiosks at the
arenas, or at the competition office. You can
also register your child on the spot, at the entrance
to the childcare, but we can only take
cash ayments here.
O-Ringen 2-days
O-Ringen 2-days is for anyone who
wants to enjoy the orienteering
festival, but who cannot be there
for the whole week.
2-days is held on the final two days of O-Ringen
week. The races will be at Lindvallen. Here
you can choose to compete against only men
or women, or in a mixed class.
Start
O-Ringen 2-days follows the same start procedures
as other classes with an open start on
Day 4 and has a chasing start on Day 5.
For start information and other competition
Check-in
When you check in your child, you must fill in a
form about allergies etc. You can either collect
this form in advance at the competition office,
or at the childcare. At the check-in you will also
get a number token to show when you come
to collect your child.
After check-in, your child will get a vest and
number displaying their name and other information.
You can also sotre extra clothes - each
child will get their own bag to put clothes in.
Then we go out to the different activities and
show you round before you leave your children
with the helpers at one of the activities,
when they seem calm and happy.
Activities
There will be all kinds of activities and experiences
in the area. This year we have a craft
workshop, a joinery, games with buildings and
dolls, story games and an outdoor play area.
This year the childcare has two themes: Dalarna
and the mountains. Snacks are served each
day and there are toilets available.
Other
Please remember that the childcare is mostly
outdoors. If it’s sunny, please put suncream on
your children before you leave them with us,
and leave them with a sun hat. If the weather
is rainy or windy, leave them with rain clothes,
a warmer jumper and gloves.
Opening hours
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
7:00-16:00.
You can leave your children with us for a
maximum of 3 h (during the time you run).
Age: 3-8 years
Price: 130 SEK/day
COMPETITION AREA
About stage 1
15.
The first race at O-Ringen in Sälen will be decided
on a classic area around Kungsleden,
“The King’s Trail”. It’s important to keep track
of the tempo changes if you want to fully succeed
here.
On Day 1, you’ll get to experience Köarskalsfjället
and courses with almost 100 percent
mountain orienteering. The area north
of Högfjällshotellet is crossed by Kungsleden,
which starts at Sälenfjällen and runs up to the
border at Härjedalen. Course setter Jan Gustavsson
has set O-Ringen courses on several
occasions and was involved in the course setting
when
O-Ringen took last place in Sälen in 2008.
6.
9.
1.
1.
14.
The longer courses will reach the border between
bare mountain and forest terrain on the
slopes of Östfjället. Here it will be important to
handle tempo changes between approaching
the controls carefully and holding a high
speed in between them. To avoid people running
in “trains” on the open fell, Jan is striving
to create courses that take more different lines
through the terrain than usual. This will also
reduce the impact on the ground in the terrain.
The visibility is very good in clear weather,
but can be quickly reduced by fog, creating an
extra challenge. The ground can be rocky and
barren in places but the runnability on Köarskalsfjället
is generally very good.
About stage 2
With open mountains and hillsides, Day 2 in
Sälen offers several challenges. Take the opportunity
to enjoy the magical, dreamlike
views on the way to start.
The second stage uses the southern and
western slopes of Storfjället. Once you have
left the mountain birch above you, the mountainside
consists of a mixture of dense spruce
forest and more open pine forest. Here, you
will be treated to somewhat steeper terrain
and a mix of open fell and forest slope orienteering.
On the way to the start you will climb
high on the slalom hills that were used for the
popular World Cup sprint at O-Ringen 2008
and from the start you can expect an awesome
view over the arena.
Course setter Stefan Jonsson from Malungs
OK believes that the key to success on the second
day will be to master slope orienteering
and to attack the controls directly. It will be an
intense challenge for everyone. If you get lost,
it often takes longer to relocate on mountain
slopes than on other types of terrain.
About stage 3
On Day 3, it will be important to keep track of
your direction in a middle distance with varying
levels of visibility, from open fell to birch
and coniferous forest.
The third competition extends southeast
of the arena, starting on the slalom pistes up
towards Storfjället. The start locations will be
the same as for Day 2, but the courses will start
in the opposite direction. Courses will have a
middle distance character, which means more
controls and more changes of direction than
on other days. The slopes consist of mountain
birch, which gradually turns into coniferous
forest where visibility is more limited.
Beautiful mountain marshland
– There is some beautiful mountain marshland,
both on the open fell and in the forest
areas, that can be either light or heavy to run
Märtaliften
on depending on the amount of rainfall, says
course setter Mats Jönsson from Korsnäs IF OK.
My big challenge is setting good courses for
the easiest classes. We will build an expanded
network of handrails in the area, either by
303:an
making new paths, or taping routes to create
the right level of difficulty.
Mountain Finish for D45K-D55K and DH60
and older on stage 4
These classes has their finish for stage 4 on
the mountain, in the upper part of the ski
slopes. You can read more about it in the
competition information.
About stage 4
A chair lift to the start, fast terrain on the
mountain and slalom orienteering to the finish.
It might be good to train downhill running
before Day 4.
On Day 4 we have a change of arena and
move down to O-Ringen City in Lindvallen.
Here, chair lifts will be waiting to transport you
to the start, from Gustavtorget to Snögubben,
and to orienteering on Sälfjället, one of Sälenfjällen’s
most interesting orienteering areas.
Here, there is a denser path network for the
easier courses as well as detailed hillsides with
valleys and ridges, which together provide an
exciting technical challenge. Course setter Johan
Hallgren from Bjursås is known for his meticulous
and well-designed courses. His previous
courses include the 2015 Swedish League
at Bjursås. Johan thinks that Day 4 will be quick
when large parts of the area offer high speed,
and when competitors are now beginning to
develop an orienteering technique that is effective
on open fells. The courses will finish by
taking you down the hill over Lindvallen’s ski
slopes, which requires extra training at downhill
running for those who want to push hard
all the way to the finish. With the final controls
in the forest areas between the pistes, however,
the finish may be more akin to a technical
slalom course rather than a downhill course.
For those who are not in so much of a hurry,
we recommend a short break before heading
down the hill. On a beautiful summer day,
there are panoramic views from the top of the
mountain.
About stage 5
A test of physical strength will conclude O-Ringen.
Hard training will help here, where the
terrain is heavy and hilly, a tough conclusion
to the week in Sälen.
The terrain on the final day is an old favourite
from Day 5 in 2008 and stands out among
the others in that there will not be any open
mountain orienteering. Instead, you will face
some glorious forest terrain with many marshes
separating smaller hills. If the week is kind
until now, the final day of the O-Ringen week
will be a physical test and all classes will climb
through soft, marshy terrain in the final part of
the courses.
Chasing start for most classes
Course setter Hans Andersson also set the
courses when O-Ringen took place in Dalarna
in 1999. The final stage will be a chasing start
for most classes, which means the overall leader
starts first, and the first to the finish in each
class
303:an
will be the overall winner.
the map scale is 1:10 000 on all days. Competitors
on Open 7 can also choose the scale
1:7 500, subject to availability. On Days 1-3, the
1:7 500 maps are offset litho printed, and on
Days 4-5 they are laser printed. All other maps
are offset litho printed on paper. All maps are
in plastic map bags. The course is overprinted
in purple. You will be allowed to keep your
map after you finish but please remember
that competition rules do not allow the provision
of information about the terrain, map or
course to competitors who are yet to start. It is
also against competition rules to gain an unfair
advantage against other competitors. We
therefore request that you do not show your
map to competitors who have not yet started!
A map showing the course for each class
will be displayed on each competition day
from 16.00 on the map board, next to the results
board at O-Ringen Square.
Colour printed shadowing maps are available
for the Induction, U1 and U2 classes.
Any map corrections will be displayed at
the relevant starts, in the affected start lanes.
Tapes in the terrain
Indistinct paths are taped with white tapes.
Out of bounds areas are taped with yellow/
blue tapes.
Out of bounds areas
All private gardens are out of bounds. Please
respect this before, during and after the competition.
Other out of bounds areas will be
marked on the map with purple overprint and
in the terrain with blue and yellow tapes. If the
out of bounds area on the map is marked with
a continuous boundary, the tapes are continuous
in the terrain. If it is marked with a dashed
boundary, it is marked with short pieces of tape
hanging in the terrain. If the area has no boundary,
there are no tapes in the terrain. Entering
any of these areas will lead to disqualification.
Control descriptions
Control descriptions are printed on the map
and are also available loose at the start. Control
descriptions follow the latest IOF norms.
Controls
Controls are marked in the terrain with orange
and white flags and can be very close together.
Please check control codes carefully! The
control code is displayed beside the punching
unit on the top of the control. Controls must
be visited in the correct order.
Refreshment points
Water will be available on the route to the start
on Days 1, 4 and 5, in the competition area on
Days 1, 2, 4 and 5, and at the finish. The location
of refreshment points in the terrain will be
marked on the map with a purple cup. In order
to minimize ”waste volume,” competitors are requested
to leave used drinks cups upside-down
on the stakes at the refreshment points.
Toilets
There are toilets at the arena and on the way
to the start on Days 1, 4 and 5. On days 2 and 3
there are toilets at the arena only.
Clothing and shoes
In accordance with SOFT’s competition rules, all
competitors must wear full body cover. Clothes
may not have tears or holes. Competitors are responsible
for following these competition rules
when they enter their start lane. Start personnel
may refuse to let runners start if they do not follow
these competition rules. There are self-service
stations at the start for taping clothing.
Spiked shoes are forbidden on all days. Violation
will lead to disqualification. Shoes with rubber
studs and metal dobs are permitted.
Electronic punching
The SportIdent electronic timing system will
be used. You can find more information about
SI cards in the ”Start” and ”Finish” sections of
this competition information. You can find information
about hired SI cards under ”Hired
SI cards”.
GPS units and tracking
GPS units may be used in elite classes. The runners
selected to carry GPS will be decided the
evening before each race.
All courses will be available for analysis using
the Livelox GPS service after the competition
has finished.
Shadowing
Shadowing is permitted in the Induction class,
U-classes and Open classes. Runners competing
in ranking classes, i.e. DH18, DH20 and DH21,
may not shadow others before their own race.
Start
On the route to the start
All competitors must wear an official race
number on their chest in order to start. No part
of the number may be folded or covered.
On your race number and in the class summary
in this programme booklet, you can see
which start you will use and the distance to
this start. Please ensure that you have the correct
SI card! Your SI card number is on the card
itself and on your race number. On the way to
the start, you will pass a place where you can
clear your SI card by inserting it into the clear
unit, marked “töm”. When you have held your
card in place for a few seconds, you will hear
and/or see a sound/light signal. The SI card’s
memory is now empty and there is space for
all the punches in the day’s competition.
On Days 2 and 3 there is a lot of climb from
the arena to the start. Remember to leave
plenty of time to get to the start.
Lift to the start on Day 4
On Day 4, all competitors have the chance to
take a chairlift to the start. Three different lifts
will be used. Make sure that you take the correct
lift. You can find more information in the
programme for Day 4.
In the event of bad weather the organizers
may close the lifts, which will mean that competitors
must walk to the start. The routes will
then follow the lift routes.
Distances to the start for Day 4 are provided
in the form x+y metres, where x is the distance
from the arena to the lift and y is the distance
from the top of the lift to the start. The lift journey
itself takes 10-15 minutes.
Remember to leave plenty of time to get to the start!
Wrong or lost SI cards
Before you start, check that you have the correct
SI card and that the number on the SI
card corresponds to the one printed on your
race number. If you arrive at the start with the
wrong SI card or without an SI card, you must
hire an SI card at the start and you will be debited
in accordance with ”Rules for SI cards”. This
procedure takes some time and you may miss
your start time. Hired cards must be returned
after you finish and paid for at the competition
office at the arena.
Competitor responsibilities at the start
• To arrive at the correct time with a cleared SI
card and the correct race number
• To start with the correct SI card. If you have
forgotten you SI card, you must use an SI
card issued by the start personnel.
• To take a map from the correct box and to
check that the map has the correct class
printed on it. The class is printed on the
front of the map, above the control descriptions,
and also in larger writing in one of the
bottom corners on the front of the map. Unfortunately,
some runners are disqualified
every year due to taking the wrong map.
Late starts
Competitors arriving late to the start must ask
for help from the start personnel at the side of
the lanes. You will be granted a late start up to
30 minutes after your start time. Your race time
will be calculated from your original start time.
The last ordinary start time is 13.30. Late starts
are not granted in classes with open starts. In
classes with open minute starts (short classes),
late starts are not granted to competitors arriving
after 13.30.
Start procedures for timed start classes Days 1–4
3 minutes before your start time: Your ”Go Forward
Time” is displayed on the clock and you
may enter the correct lane for your class. Signs
will show you the correct lane. Your SI card will
then be checked, to make sure that you have
come forward at the correct time and that you
have the correct SI card. If you have the wrong
SI card you will not be allowed to run with it
you must step to the side to hire a card from
the organizers. The check punch establishes
whether you have cleared the card, which is
confirmed by the card emitting a light and/or
sound signal. If the card has not been cleared,
there is an extra clearing unit at the start. The
check punch confirms that you have been at
the start. This punch and the finish punch are
necessary for checking whether you have arrived
safely at the finish.
2 minutes before your start time: Continue
to the next box, where you can take your lose
control descriptions. Control descriptions are
also printed on the map.
1 minute before your start time for elite classes,
DH18 and older: Competitors may go to the
map box and prepare to take their map. Please
note! It is the competitor’s responsibility to
take the correct map. It is not permitted to
study the map before the start signal. At the
next start signal (1 minute after entering the
box), you may take your map and continue to
the start point.
1 minute before your start time for classes
DH16 and younger: Competitors may go to
the map box, pick up their map and look at it.
Please note! It is the competitor’s responsibility
to take the correct map. Competitors may
then go to the start line and wait for the start
signal. While you wait, you can look at the map.
At the next start signal (1 minute after entering
the box), you may continue to the start point.
For younger classes, there are personnel at the
start point to help with reading the map.
The route to the start point is taped and is a
part of your course.
Start procedures for classes with open minute
starts, Days 1-4
On Days 1-4, all short classes from DH17-20
and up have an open minute start. This means
that provided there is a competitor at the start,
one competitor/class may start on each whole
minute. For those competing in classes with
open minute starts, this means that you are
not allocated a start time for Days 1-4. Go to
the start when you want between 8.30 and
13.30. In classes with an open minute start,
you will not be permitted to start if you arrive
at the start after 13.30. When you want to start,
stand in the correct queue for your class.
3 minutes before your start time: When you
are first in the queue, at the next minute you
can go forward into the lane for your class.
Signs will show you the correct lane. Your SI
card will then be checked, to make sure that
you have come forward at the correct time
and that you have the correct SI card. If you
have the wrong SI card you will not be allowed
to run with it you must step to the side to hire
a card from the organizers. The check punch
establishes whether you have cleared the card,
which is confirmed by the card emitting a light
and/or sound signal. If the card has not been
cleared, there is an extra clearing unit at the
start. The check punch confirms that you have
been at the start. This punch and the finish
punch are necessary for checking whether
you have arrived safely at the finish.
2 minutes before your start time: Continue
to the next box, where you can take your lose
control descriptions. Control descriptions are
also printed on the map.
1 minute before your start time: Competitors
may go to the map box and prepare to take
their map. Please note! It is the competitor’s
responsibility to take the correct map. It is not
permitted to study the map before the start
signal. At the next start signal (1 minute after
entering the box), you may take your map and
continue to the start point.
If you forget to punch at the start, your start
time will be calculated from your check punch
and you will lose time. The route to the start is
taped and is a part of your course.
Start procedures for classes with open starts,
Days 1–5
Induction, U1, U2, O-Ringen Open 1–12 and
Challenge classes as well as Motion classes
have open starts, so-called punching starts.
Competitors in these classes are not assigned
a start time on Day 1–5. O-Ringen Challenge
has an open start on Day 1 and 3. O-Ringen
2-days has an open start on Day 4 and a chasing
start on Day 5.
When you would like to start, stand in the
queue for your class. When you are first in the
queue, your SI card will be checked. You will
also be checked to make sure you have the
correct SI card. The time your SI card is checked
is registered on your card as a safety measure,
in case you forget to punch at the start. This
punch and the finish punch are necessary for
checking whether you have arrived safely at
the finish. After these checks, you may continue
forward to your loose control descriptions,
which are also printed on your map. Then you
may continue to the map holder for your class
and take your map. Please note! It is the competitor’s
responsibility to take the correct map.
After you have taken the correct map, continue
to the start line. Once you have passed the
start line, you must punch at one of the start
units. If you forget to punch at the start, your
start time will be calculated from your check
punch and you will lose time. The route to the
start point is taped and is a part of your course.
Start procedures for days with mass starts, Days 2 and 4
O-Ringen Challenge has a mass start on Days
2 and 4. These will take place at the usual
start at 10.00 for the 10 km and 10.15 for the
5 km class. Competitors assemble at the start
around 10-15 minutes before the start and
enter the correct lane for their class. Here, SI
cards will be checked and you will be checked
to make sure that you have come forward at
the correct time and that you have the correct
SI card with you. After these checks, you may
continue to your loose control descriptions,
which are also printed on the map.
With 2 minutes to go, competitors may
enter the start box. Your map will be on the
ground face down, with your race number visible
on the back of the map. Stand behind your
map. You may not touch your map before the
start signal. Please note! It is the competitor’s
responsibility to take the correct map. When
the start signal is given, you may take your map
and continue to the start point. The route to the
start point is taped and is a part of your course.
Start procedures for classes with chasing starts, Day 5
On Day 5, there will be a chasing start for all
main and short classes except DH10, and for
Challenge and 2-days classes. A chasing start
means that the runner with the best overall
time starts first. Others in the class start at
a time after this, corresponding to the time
they are behind the leader in the overall
standings. Competitors who are over 90 minutes
after the leader or who have not completed
all the races start afterwards at 15-second
intervals. The first 15 in each class with a
chasing start must wear a special race number
displaying their class and position after the
first 4 days. These numbers will be available
to collect at the start. Other competitors wear
their ordinary race number. Around 3 minutes
before your start time, you will be called up
to check your SI card. You may then continue
forward. When your start time (hours, minutes
and seconds) is displayed on the start clock,
you may then take your map and continue to
the start point. Please note! It is the competitor’s
responsibility to take the correct map
Start procedures for classes without chasing
starts, Day 5
Motion, Induction, U1–U2, and O-Ringen
Open 1–12 have an open start every day, including
Day 5.
Classes DH10 have timed minute starts, i.e. the
same start procedure as on Days 1–4, on Day 5.
Punching at controls
When you punch at each control, check for
a sound and/or light signal from the control
unit. Please pay extra attention if another competitor
punches at the same time at a nearby
unit, so that you do not confuse this unit’s signal
with your own punching. To be safe, you
can punch more than once. Only the first correct
punch will be saved on the card when you
punch more than once in succession at the
same control. If you cannot register a punch
with your SI card after repeated attempts, use
the pin punch on the control unit. Punching
with a pin punch must be done in the reserve
boxes on your map.
Remember to punch at the last control, which
is near the entrance to the finish lanes. You must
carry your SI card round the entire course. A lost
SI card will result in disqualification, even if you
punched with a pin punch for the controls you
visited after you lost your SI card.
Competitor responsibilities when punching
• To punch at the correct controls in the correct
order
• To wait for the light/sound signal from your
own punch to be sure it has registered
• To punch manually in the reserve box using
the pin punch if no signal is seen or heard
• To carry your SI card from start to finish,
even if you use any of the pin punches.
Finish
Run-in and finish punch
The run-in consists of several lanes. On your
race number, you will find the name that corresponds
to your finish lane. Your finish lane is
a part of your course. Running in the wrong
lane may lead to disqualification. All competitors
must punch at the finish. Please note that
the finish line and finish punches are a few
metres before the finish tent, so you can see
them when you run into the finish.
Finish for DH80 and older on Days 1–3
Classes DH80 and older have their finish line
at the last control on Days 1-3. After this, competitors
must continue down the run-in to
download their SI card and must also punch
when they cross the finish line, though this will
not affect their race time. On Day 5, however,
the finish procedure is the same as for other
classes.
Finish D45K-D55K and DH60 and older on Day 4
Classes D45K-D55K and all classes from DH60
and older have their finish up on the mountain
on Day 4, “Fjällmålet” (“Mountain Finish”).
All runners with this finish receive their time
when punching at this finish (in contrast to
DH80 and older for Days 1-3).
After punching at the finish, all runners with
Fjällmålet must go down to the ordinary finish,
walk/run in their lane, and then punch at the
finish line and thereafter download your SI card.
Please note that the time between Fjällmålet and
the ordinary finish is not included in your time.
The ordinary finish at Arena Lindvallen can
be seen from Fjällmålet and is located 900
meters steep downhill. As an option, you can
walk up the mountain, 400 meters/60 height
meters, and take the lift down. Please note that
finish punch and SI card download still must
take place in the ordinary finish.
Split time print-outs, red exit, etc are all handled
at the ordinary finish.
Runners not downloading their SI cards at
the ordinary finish are disqualified.
Chasing start finish
For classes with a chasing start on the last day,
final positions will be determined by the order
in which the finish line is passed and the finish
units are further along the finish lane. In tight
sprint finishes, finish line judges will determine
the order in which runners may punch the finish
units. In order to allow fair sprint finishes,
there are two lanes for elite classes. Competitors
choose either the left- or right-hand lane
and may not then change lanes once they
have chosen.
SI Download
After you finish, continue to the finish tent to
download the contents of you SI card onto the
computer system.
If you have not completed your course
Competitors who do not complete their
course must report to the finish and download
their SI card as soon as possible. If for any
reason, e.g. injury, this is not possible, the competitor’s
race number must be reported immediately
to the competition office either at
the arena or at O-Ringen Square. A search will
be organized for any competitors who are not
accounted for at the end of the competition.
Maximum time
On Days 1, 2, 4 and 5, the maximum race time
is 2.5 hours. On Day 3 (middle distance) the
maximum time is 2 hours. If you are out longer,
you have not completed the competition.
Red exit
If you use a pin punch at any control, please
use the ”Red exit”, where your punch will be
checked manually. You will also be directed
to the red exit if the personnel at the ordinary
download find something wrong with your SI
card. You can also use the red exit to report any
technical problems, e.g. if a control unit does
not work how it should. All disqualifications
are shown in the results list.
Returning hired SI cards
Hired SI cards must be returned after you finish.
Please see ”Rules for SI cards”.
Clubs’ responsibilities for incomplete races
Each club must ensure their members understand
and comply with rules regarding retiring
from a course. Clear neglect of this may lead to
the competitor’s club being required to provide
remuneration equivalent to the cost of a search.
Competitor responsibilities at the finish
• To use the correct finish lane. The name of
your lane is printed on your race number.
• To punch at the end of the lane, whether or
not you have completed the course.
• To download your SI card, even if you have
not finished the race
• To return hired SI cards
• To ensure that any punch in a reserve box is
checked at the red exit
Results
Results for all runners and classes will be displayed
on the digital results screens in the arena,
including all disqualifications. A list of the
day’s winners in all classes will be displayed from
around 17.30 on the results board at O-Ringen
Square. Full results lists will be published at
around 19.00 on the results board at O-Ringen
Square. Club results lists can be printed out by a
club representative at the competition office at
O-Ringen Square from 19.00. All results and split
times will be published on oringenonline.com,
once they are ready.
Results will be updated continuously at
www.oringenonline.com during the competition.
These results are preliminary.
Competition badge
SOFT’s competition badge can be earned in
competition classes, recreational classes and
open classes on Days 1–4.
Rules for SI cards
It is the responsibility of the competitor to take
the correct SI card to the start. The SI card you
are registered with is written clearly on your
race number. If you have the wrong SI card at
the start, you must hire a card there in order
to be able to compete. If you have lost your
SI card in the forest, you will not have a valid
result for that race, even if you have punched
the map. Competition rules state that SI cards
must be carried for the entire competition.
Your SI card is personal to you, even if you
have hired it for the week or for just one day. Only
one SI card may be used per competitor per day.
If you compete using another competitor’s
SI card, you will be disqualified from that race.
Never lend out your SI card to anyone else to
run an Open course, it will result in this person
being disqualified. If you have pre-registered
for O-Ringen 5-Days, you may not run an Open
course with your own SI card. If you would like
to run an Open course on one day instead of
your ordinary course, you must hire an SI card
at O-Ringen Open registration.
Hired SI cards
Hired SI cards are issued in race envelopes,
which can be collected at the competition
office along with other competition materials.
Temporary SI hire
If a competitor has forgotten their SI card for
one day, a card can be hired temporarily. You
can hire a card at the arena’s competition office
or at the start. A rental contract applies.
Only this SI card may be used by this competitor
on this day.
Fees for SI hire
It costs 70 SEK/day to hire an SI card from the
competition office, which is paid immediately.
If you hire a card for the whole week at the
competition office, the fee is 260 SEK/week,
which is paid immediately. Any unpaid hire
fees will be debited to the competitor or to
those responsible for registration.
Lost SI cards
Competitors who have lost their own SI card can
hire a new card for the remaining days at the
competition office. Competitors who have hired
their SI card for the whole week and lose this
