EN HALV LITER
SVENSK SOMMAR
I vår nya jordgubbsglass samsas svensk färsk grädde
med solvarma jordgubbar från Stora Berg självplock, 15 minuter
från vår Glassfabrik. En somrig smak av Sverige helt enkelt.
After the
mountains
comes the seaside!
Once again, O-Ringen is over – another one is coming. We are leaving the mountains (and
a bit of rain and hail) behind us and our sights are set on the coastline ahead of us. At the
core of O-Ringen is the concept that the experiences of orienteering and fellowship are
central to each edition, while the setting and framework change around them.
Photo: Peter Holgersson.
När livet leker
We know that this year, many
of you had further to travel
to our arenas, which meant
that some people spent
altogether too much time waiting in Åre.
To everyone who took part in O-Ringen
Åre 2023, we promise we have read, sorted,
processed and taken on board both the
criticism and the praise that we received
in connection with our competitor survey.
Without your feedback each year, O-Ringen
– together with its competitors – would
never be able to be the world’s greatest
orienteering adventure!
O-Ringen 2023 in Åre was a real
challenge. Changing basic conditions have
been and still are a challenge for ourselves
as an organisation, as well as our concept
and our delivery model. Now we are
drawing a line under 2023 and looking to
the years ahead. With a self-critical eye
and high quality engagement with you,
our loyal competitors, we have been able
to update our mission plan, collecting and
documenting many important points and
new experiences. The knowledge we’ve
gained will be crucial to how we continue to
organise successful and enjoyable events in
Swedish orienteering.
Now the orienteering adventure is
heading south – to the coast of Småland!
Our helpers and destination are ready to
welcome you. You can expect an O-Ringen
City, with the campsite and O-Ringen
Square, that’s just a short cycle from the
centre of Oskarshamn. We have two stages
right next to O-Ringen City and yet another
arena within cycling distance. We are also
providing five days of competition for all
orienteering disciplines. So, orienteering for
everyone and plenty of time for shared club
dinners, eating cake, bathing and spending
time with family and friends!
A huge thank you to everyone helping us
to be even better!
TACK FÖR
I ÅR, ÅRE!
Ren njutning

Thank you Region Jämtland Härjedalen
for medical healthcare and collaboration!
During O-Ringen in Åre, our arenas in Trillevallen, Järpen
and Ånn all included a temporary mobile medical station
operated by Region Jämtland Härjedalen’s team. The
region’s aim was to ease pressure on other local
healthcare services, including local health centres,
Östersund Hospital and the ambulance service.
The medical station at the arena was there to provide full treatment
for anybody who needed it, while at the same time giving as high
quality healthcare as is possible in temporary facilities. A total of
13 people worked in the station’s team. As well as a receptionist
there were a doctors, a physiotherapist, nurses, a radiographer and
assistant nurse/orthopaedic technologist. All visits were recorded
and documented by the team treating the patient. As well as this
team there was also a logistics manager, a project manager and two
more people to help transport and build the medical station.
The team on the ground
The team were divided into five treatment areas: an emergency
area (doctor/nurse), physiotherapy area (physiotherapist),
orthopaedics area (orthopaedist/nurse), eye injuries, etc. (regional
doctor/nurse), X-ray (radiographer), and of course a reception led
a receptionist and triage (emergency nurse). The doctor and nurse
in the emergency area also had to either run out to casualties or be
transported there on O-Ringen’s quad, depending on the situation.
The station had equipment including and eye microscope and
portable X-ray unit, as well as materials to stitch and dress wounds,
bandages and other treatments for injuries commonly suffered
during O-Ringen. You could clearly see that the injuries presented
varied not only according to the terrain, but also the weather. The
forest terrain led to more eye injuries and mountain terrain and
wet weather more cuts and strains.
Many people treated at the competition
In total, 213 people received medical care during the competitions
at Trillevallen, Järpen and Ånn. 210 of these were treated
on location and three were transported elsewhere; all three had
heart complaints and were taken to Östersund Hospital. Of the 213
visits; 156 saw a doctor, 18 a physiotherapist and 39 a nurse. The
average age of patients visiting the station was 41. The youngest
patient was 6 years old and the oldest was 88.
25 X-rays and 9 fractures
The mobile X-ray unit performed 25 X-rays, detecting 9 fractures that
were treated on location. Patients who needed X-rays avoided having
to go to hospital in Östersund or a health centre in Åre. The images
were transferred digitally to the hospital and read by their team, with
the answer being sent directly back to the emergency area.
How did it go?
On the basis of the above, we can summarise the collaboration
between O-Ringen and the regional health service by saying
say that it worked just as well as we had hoped. O-Ringen took
place without any serious incidents or injuries. The aim of easing
pressure on other health services was met successfully, in that
treatment on location healthcare and ambulance services in the
area were not affected. The mobile X-Ray unit meant that these
25 patients avoided having to be taken to Östersund Hospital or a
health centre in Åre for care, easing pressure on both transport and
their X-Ray services.
Finally, you could say that providing healthcare on location, under
the direction of Region Jämtland Härjedalen, has worked very
well during O-Ringen Åre. It meant not only a good service but
much better accessibility. Normal healthcare services were not put
under pressure and were hardly affected at all. The response from
competitors has also been very positive, in that they were provided
with high quality, safe and quick care on location.
Changes for age groups
75 years and above
Photo: Peter Holgersson
A number of you have requested that we change how
we organise competition classes for runners aged 75
years and older. We are therefore very happy to be able to
present these new changes.
• No more classes D75 Short, H75 Short, D80 Short and
H80 Short
• Classes DH75-95 will have a free minute start
• Classes DH75-95 will use the start previously used
by DH80, giving a shorter distance to the start for
classes DH75 and for runners who previously ran the
short class.
Runners just turning 75 may find they have slightly longer courses
than in the 70 Short class but, on the other hand, there will be a
shorter distance to the start. We feel that this is more important
than a couple of hundred metres out on the course. The start for
the short classes (DH17–20 Short to DH70 Short) often needs to
be located further away from the arena to allow for the best courses
for everyone starting from that start. Just as before, the last control
will count as your finish time for classes DH80+ on stages 1 to 4.
We hope that these changes for our older runners will make it
possible for more people to continue enjoying O-Ringen, even
when you legs aren’t quite as quick as they used to be.
Many competitors have requested not to have two different
classes for the relatively small number of runners in the DH75 and
-80 age groups. We hope that having just one class will mean a
better sense of camaraderie, as everyone in each age group runs in
the same class.
ETT SVENSKT SPORTMÄRKE GRUNDAT 1981 I AVESTA
Getting to Oskarshamn
When you make your way to the Småland coast and
Oskarshamn, you’re about the same distance from each
of Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm.
It’s easy to get to Oskarshamn by car or by using one of the
daily bus services from many places in Sweden. A number of
bus companies offer services; Flixbus has a direct connection
to 15 other towns and Vy Bus4You to 9 towns, and then there’s
Silverlinjen, which runs between Öland/Kalmar and Stockholm.
This year we will also be able to offer transport with our O-Ringen
buses from several places in Sweden (details and booking will be
available later).
If you would like to fly, the nearest airport is Kalmar Öland
Airport, which is served by several routes and carriers. You might
want to combine your visit to the Småland coast with a trip to
Gotland by catching the ferry between Gotland and Oskarshamn.
There are also several options for travelling by train. If you’re
arriving by train to Kalmar, Berga or Västervik you can take a
bus connection to your final destination. Read more about taking
public transport at kalmarlanstrafik.se or download the “Kalmar
länstrafik” app to see which connections suit you best.
Getting to our main arenas
Stage buses will travel to the first two stages in Rosenfors from
both O-Ringen City and the satellite parking, and to Stage 3 from
the satellite parking. From O-Ringen City to Stage 3 you can cycle
or walk approximately 4 km. We will also provide additional town
buses. For stages 4 and 5, the arena is right next to O-Ringen City.
Community, club feeling
and varied challenges
– that’s what O-Ringen is really about
I have seen many things in the world of sport, but getting
to stand on top of the podium after a stage of O-Ringen
beats most of them. The fact that this was in the
H21C class and was 42 years ago really doesn’t matter.
Orienteering is sport at its very best.
Every time I’m out in the forest walking Xavi, our wire-haired Jack
Russell terrier, the memories come flooding back. I look over at the
crag on the far side of the marsh, imagining a red and white control
kite at its foot, or on the north side of the marsh. Sometimes
I take a few quick steps in from the road or ski track, pretending I
have a map and compass in my hand, and that I’m heading straight
for a control only I can see.
For me, orienteering competitions were never that simple. I
often wandered round searching for the right control, turned the
map the wrong way, ran too quickly or too slowly and made such
huge mistakes that I’d promise myself that never again would I
venture out into an unfamiliar wilderness. Only to then find myself
at next Tuesday’s club training race, paying the token start fee,
drawing the course onto the map and throwing myself back into
the forest.
I did every sport you could think of, growing up in northern
Småland in the 1970s and 80s. Football, athletics, skiing, bandy,
table tennis, volleyball, shooting – and orienteering. There was
something special about orienteering. The feeling of fellowship in
that big orienteering family was unbeatable. I loved being close to
nature, the freedom, the suspense ahead of the competition itself
and then chatting about our races and route choices afterwards.
I still have a big box of old maps at my parents’ home in Södra
Vi, about 10km north of Vimmerby. My routes are drawn onto
Anders Lindblad, in red, discusses route choices with dad Kurt and cousin Ove
Lindblad. Photo: private.
them in blue pen. There aren’t many lines going straight to the controls.
They were mostly wiggling and circling at the side of them.
The best thing was O-Ringen each summer
The best thing about orienteering was O-Ringen each summer, or
as we called it, the Five Days. The first time my cousin Ove and I
went – we were pretty much joined at the hip in those days – was
when the competition was held in Skåne in 1974. Two years previously,
the forests of Småland had been invaded by runners, not
far from Vimmerby – I remember that one stage was held near the
farm where the Emil of Lönneberga films were shot. That competition
left a big impression on me and the Five Days was something I
wanted to be part of.
Skåne 1974 where Brösarp’s hills made for a tough stage,
Stockholm 1975 with Västerhaninge as a competition centre,
Västergötland 1978, when Ove and I were just as interested in the
girls from OK Hammaren in Sandviken as the orienteering itself
(when we arrived home we were quickly convinced to ride our
mopeds from Vimmerby to Sandviken and back just to see them
again) and then Hälsingland 1981.
My greatest sporting memory
It was there, at Stage 3, where I achieved the greatest victory of
my life. I ran in class H21C, so the class below Elite, A and B, but
competition was still tough. I remember, there were over 300 of us
runners competing for victories and podium places, and I had an
almost perfect race on Stage 3.
Winning a stage meant that my friends in Vimmerby OK made
a victory wreath that the hung round my neck at our camp, where
the VOK flag was flying high and the mood was wonderful, with
plenty of jokes, unity and camaraderie across all age and gender
boundaries. At the official prize giving I got to stand on the top of
the podium. I remember that I won a rain jacket and a wooden
Hälsinge key. I felt proud, happy and grateful. Later that evening,
all of us in Vimmerby OK got together to eat at our camp. I’ve forgotten
the stories but I’m sure that Lasse, Mats, Ove, Jerry, Roger,
Agneta, Bengt, Mats-Lennart and the rest of us discussed route
choices, maps, terrain and life in general before eventually ending
up on the dance floor.
A newspaper clipping from Vimmerby Tidning, which my
mother Kerstin has saved, describes how I hadn’t manage to get
in touch to report on my own stage win that day. I’d just started
a part-time job as a sports reporter at Vimmerby Tidning and
probably thought it was a bit embarrassing to phone in and tell
them about my win. This was in the time before mobile phones
and the internet, when journalists used old-fashioned landlines.
I can imagine that finding a telephone on a campsite in Hälsingland
probably wasn’t all that easy, either. But the article about my
victory headlined the sports pages in Vimmerby Tidning. Neither
before or since has it been the case that my achievements were seen
The wreath made by Vimmerby OK clubmates after winning a stage of H21C in
to be the biggest event of the day.
I went out in third place in the chasing start on the final stage, a
position I held to the finish. Finishing third at O-Ringen, no matter
which class it was in, is one of my best sporting memories. This when
I’ve worked as a journalist for Svenska Dagbladet at nine Olympic
Games, lots of World Championships including football, athletics, skiing,
handball and other big adventures, like the Dakar Rally in Africa,
the Australian Open in tennis and the Masters in golf.
Among honours and international medals
I’ve even reported on the World Orienteering Championships,
when they took place in the forests outside Västerås in 2004 and
Karolina A Höjsgaard won gold in the long distance. The orienteer
who I’ve written most about, however, is Tove Alexandersson, who
in 2019 also won the Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal as only the
second orienteer ever after Annichen Kringstad in 1981.
For the last ten years I’ve been part of the jury deciding on a
recipient of the annual Gold Medal. In my role as secretary – and
as a sports columnist for Svenska Dagbladet – I’m the one who
nominates candidates, is involved with most aspects of awarding
the medal and I even get to vote for the eventual winner. It is a
privilege to be part of the Swedish sports prize that’s most steeped
in tradition and, as a former orienteer, of course I have highlighted
Tove Alexandersson’s successes over the years. Annichen Kringstad
has also been part of the jury for as long as I have.
Comeback at Smålandskusten 2024
It feels very exciting and appropriate for O-Ringen to be coming
to Småland in 2024. I’m sure that every competitor will be looked
after very well and the courses will be both challenging and enjoyable.
The terrain will be varied, from detailed coastal terrain to
heavier-going Småland forest. It will be challenging, both physically
and technically.
I haven’t competed at a single orienteering event since O-Ringen
1983, when Anderstorp in Småland was the competition centre
for almost 25,000 competitors. Annichen Kringstad – who else! –
and Håkan Eriksson won the elite classes that year, while I mostly
Camping at O-Ringen. Lars-Göran Johansson, cousins Anders and Ove Lindblad
and Mats Johansson. Photo: private
drifted around with little idea what I was doing. I can’t remember
where I ended up on the results, but that isn’t really what O-Ringen
is about. It’s the camaraderie, club atmosphere, varied challenges,
post-race discussions each evening and the Spartan camping and
campervan lifestyle that really make the Five Days what it is.
When I think back on all the joy that orienteering, and above
all O-Ringen, has given me, perhaps it would be fitting to make a
comeback with a map and compass at Smålandskusten 2024. Will
there be a C class in H65?
STAGES 1 & 2
ROSENFORS
O-Ringen 2024 opens with a long
distance competition on Stage 1
and middle distance on Stage 2 in
Rosenfors. Rosenfors is located inland,
to the west of O-Ringen City. Arriving
on the stage bus, you get dropped off
at Rosenfors IK’s home ground, just a
few hundred metres from Rosenfors
Arena. It will be a classic O-Ringen
arena in a large meadow, where careful
orienteering is needed all the way to
the last control.
By the fertile valley where the rivers Emån
and Stångån almost meet, Småland’s hills
rise up to the north west.
Stages 1 and 2 are on the east of the valley,
with some larger hills, and mostly good
runnability and visibility. The terrain is characterised
by areas of detail, with many rock
features. There are not many paths or tracks
in the terrain, which has at times made
setting the easiest courses more difficult. We
have created some new paths to be able to
make these courses as good as possible.
Stage 1, Long distance
Stage 1 starts to the south east of the arena
for the shorter and easier courses, in a
vaguer part of the map. There are paths and
tracks to begin with and then some felled
areas, fields and meadows towards the end,
before the final meadow and the finish.
Longer and more technical courses start
straight into a pathless, detailed area with
Comments after test-running the
courses for Stage 1 on 9 th Sept 2023:
• Good, varied terrain and a good
challenge.
• Varied course with easier, more
difficult, shorter and longer legs.
• Nice terrain, fun orienteering.
• Tough terrain, quite slow going.
many boulders and crags. The fast, open terrain
with good visibility is in places swapped
for felled sections and denser areas, with
reduced visibility and runnability. Between
the hills and up on their tops, clear areas of
marsh can be useful for navigation. Most
courses finish in a very detailed area with
boulders, crags and smaller hills, then it’s
just a case of running through the meadow
to the finish.
Stage 2, Middle distance
The route to the start on Stage 2 passes
northwards through Rosenfors village.
Shorter and easier courses will use an area
with few paths and many details close to the
paths. All courses finish through the same
area. Longer and more technical courses
start up on the big hill which dominates
the competition area, where the terrain is
runnable, with good visibility. Like on Stage
1 there is a lot of detail but towards the end
of the courses there is even more, and both
runnability and visibility are more limited in
places. Remember to stay focused as you run
down the hill on the approach to the finish.
Comments after test-running the
courses for Stage 2 on 10 th Sept 2023:
• Great map. Clear, even though
there is a lot of detail.
• The courses have a good difficulty
level. It’s good that they don’t just
rely on direction changes all the
time, like some planners do. This
terrain is demanding enough as
it is.
• Fun and challenging course, good
consistency.
• Lovely terrain!
STAGE 3
GUNNARSÖ
Now it’s time to move to the sea and
Gunnarsö Arena for a long distance
race. If you are staying at the O-Ringen
campsite or in Oskarshamn, we recommend
cycling to the arena – it’s less
than 5 km. If you don’t have a bike with
you and the walk is a bit too far, there
will be buses from Döderhultsdalen.
Now we’re by the sea on the Småland coast
and the typical coastal terrain is much less
hilly than Stages 1 and 2.
The terrain is characterised by large areas
of pine forest with open rock, detailed hills
and marshes of all sizes, which form natural
boundaries between the open rock areas and
small hills. Shorter and easier courses stay in
the area closest to the arena, in terrain with
a lot of paths winding their way between the
marshes, small hills and up over the bare
rock, where they can sometimes be a little
unclear. Make sure you look up to see where
the path continues on the other side. Longer
and more technical courses have a bit more
climb and the terrain has fewer paths, with
lots of detail to make the orienteering more
difficult, especially near the old sea inlet in
and around the nature reserve Sjöboviken,
which is crossed using bridges. The courses
finish though the area close to the arena
with many paths. If you look up when you
finish, you will see the blue water of Östersjön.
If it’s a nice day, taking a dip in the sea
might be the perfect way to finish your race!
förmåga att orientera sig i omgivningen. Till viss del kan förmågan vara
medfödd och till och med vara påverkad av ett visst hormon. Andra studier
har funnit att det är individuella egenskaper och anlag som hjälper till. Att
These stages finish
by passing through
the Fagereke
nature reserve
STAGES 4 & 5
DÖDERHULTSDALEN
Photo: Cornelia Höglind.
The final two stages of O-Ringen will
be based at Döderhultsdalen Arena,
right next to O-Ringen City. It will be
within walking and cycling distance
of the centre of Oskarshamn. The
stages finish by passing through the
Fagereke nature reserve, finishing at
the arena under Hjortberget.
Stage 4, Middle distance
On the way to the start on Stage 4, competitors
can also see the blue water of Östersjön.
The starts are close to the northern part of
Oskarshamn. There are lots of paths in the
whole of the competition area, between the
low hills that have plenty of detail.
The terrain also features some areas of
denser forest, which limit running speed and
mean you have to navigate more carefully. At
the start of the stage, some competitors may
pass an adventure playground and frisbee golf
course and may need to cross some ropes, etc.
that are not marked on the map. Competitors
will be challenged by some shorter and
steeper hills and changing terrain close to
the edge of town. Shorter and easier courses
start in small forested areas on the edge of
town, then cross under the E22 and finish
by passing through Fagereke nature reserve.
The path network, with a variety of large and
small paths, means the terrain is constantly
changing all the way to the finish under
Hjortberget. Longer and more technical
courses start in a trickier, more detailed area
then pass some fields and meadows on the
way to the crossing under the E22, then pass
through Fagereke nature reserve on the way
to the finish.
Comments after test-running the
courses for Stage 4 on 6 th Sept 2023:
• Fun.
• Difficult.
• Changing terrain, good variety.
Stage 5, Long distance
The final stage takes place in forest to the
west of Stage 4 but finishes in the same place
at Döderhultsdalen Arena. This last stage
has mostly good runnability, however there
are some denser areas and areas with undergrowth,
with some felled area to cross or go
round. The terrain consists of gently sloping
forest and has fewer details than Stages 3
and 4. Shorter and easier courses pass riding
clubs and horse paddocks before coming
from the west into the same finishing area as
on Stage 4. When it’s time to decide the winners,
choose the right paths and avoid extra
climb at the end to be first to the finish.
Longer and more technical courses start
northwards in varied terrain, with open forest
mixed with denser areas and felled areas,
where you’ll need to navigate well and find
the best lines for running. The final, decisive
part of each course will go through the same
area as Stage 4, with pastures and broadleaf
forest with many large, old deciduous trees.
Keep orienteering all the way into the finish if
you want to be crowned a winner at O-Ringen
Smålandskusten 2024!
Comments after test-running the
courses for Stage 5 on 20 th Sept 2023:
• Not very hilly, but tough!
• I would like one or two more long legs.
• Many people will find this challenging.
inner harbour. The start and changeover of the Bagheera Relay is
also here.
The competitions use slightly different areas but both will be in
central parts of Oskarshamn, in front of cheering spectators. The
competition terrain itself is a combination of urban and park areas.
The park features parkland, forest and some buildings (a school) and
in town, small yards and narrow passages, streets and alleyways – all
to give a real sprint orienteering challenge.
The Gotland ferry approaches Oskarshamn. I disembark
and look to the horizon. I’ve just arrived here on the
mainland to start my first job. Little did I know that, 30
years later, I would be looking at the same horizon as I
draw the map for the O-Ringen Elite Sprint.
Just like back then, the Gotland ferry nears the inner harbour,
turning its usual pirouette before docking at the quay. The passengers
step back onto dry land. They rush by as I stand scratching my
head, looking at the cartographic dilemma posed by Långa Soffan,
said to be the world’s longest bench. It must be in the Guinness
Book of Records. From here, as well as the Gotland ferry, you
can also spot Blå Jungfrun (“The Blue Maiden”) in the distance.
Steeped in legend, the island also a national park.
Now I’m nearing the middle of town. I walk the same cobbles
as Axel Robert Pettersson, “Döderhultaren,” walked a century ago.
You’ll definitely learn about him when you come to Oskarshamn
next summer. There’s a bit of a hill to climb, so I have tired legs by
the time I reach the town square.
Competitors will surely run through the town centre. Where
else will they go? Apart from the town centre itself, Oskarshamn is
proud to have a relatively large park. As well as typical park terrain
it also has some forest, where you get the feeling of being right out
in the woods, far away from the bustle of the town centre.
Streets, cycleways and walkways. Tarmac, cobbles, grass and
gravel. Forest, parkland and lots of urban areas. Yes, it’s anyone’s
guess how the course setter chooses to use these possibilities.
I hope and believe that all our competitors will appreciate the
variety that Oskarshamn has to offer, and wish you all a warm
welcome to the Smålandskusten in 2024.
O-Ringen Smålandskusten 2024 offers five MTBO stages,
each with its own character. As a MTBO competitor
you will cycle on everything from small, very technically
demanding paths to fast, wide gravel roads, with some
tarmac sections. Not only that, three of the stages
are held next to O-Ringen Square and the campsite at
Döderhultsdalen.
Stages 1 and 2, Arena Långehäll
Långehäll outdoor leisure area, just outside Blomstermåla, will
host the first two stages. The area is in a wonderful forest setting
and has a rich path and road network, which really lends itself to
MTBO. The area has up to 20 kilometres of bike tracks, which are
maintained by Ålems Cykelklubb.
Stage 1 is a middle distance, where MTBO riders will be
challenged in terms of both intensive navigation and cycling ability
in Långehäll’s dense path network, which also has some hilly areas.
Stage 2 is a long distance, where MTBO riders will face a
relatively flatter area with faster paths and tracks, offering lots of
route choice.
STAGE 1 & 2 STAGE 3 STAGE 4 & 5
Stage 3, Havslätt Arena Hjortberget
Stage 3 at Hjortberget Arena is a lengthened sprint, in suburban
terrain near the O-Ringen campsite at Döderhultsdalen. The
terrain features both fast roads and paths near a residential area,
as well as cycling in a recreational area with a dense path network,
with some paths being more technically demanding. The finish is
at Hjortberget, next to Döderhultsdalen.
Stages 4–5, Scaniaslingan Arena
Stage 4 is a middle distance and will take place in Kronoparken,
an area near to town and next to the O-Ringen campsite. The area
has some small hills and a good network of cycling and mountain
bike tracks created by the local cycling club. The area is perfect for
middle distance.
Stage 5 is a long distance and will also take place near the
O-Ringen campsite. The competition area overlaps with the area
used for Stage 4, which is combined with fast gravel roads and a
variety of paths of all sizes and technical difficulty. The area offers
varied terrain, with both fast cycling and tricky sections.
The start and finish are at the arena but, after finishing and
showering, we recommend taking your bike down to the MTBO
meting place at Döderhultsdalen Arena to meet fellow competitors,
friends and family and discuss the day’s competition with them.
Swiss orienteering family are welcome additions to SOK Viljan
Grendelmeier family
• Ineke, mom
• Peter, dad
• Sanna 14 years
• Marit 13 years
Orienteering
is more popular
in Sweden
Idols SImona Aebersold and Hanna Lundberg have both run O-Ringen several times. Photo: Peter Holgersson.
In the summer of 2021, the Swiss
orienteering family the Grendelmeiers
left their homeland and moved to
Oskarshamn, on the coast of Småland.
The family is made up of Ineke and
Peter, who are both doctors in their
50s, and their daughters Sanna, 14, and
Marit, 13. The move meant that the SOK
Viljan girls’ team got a real boost, as
both Sanna and Marit are talented young
runners who have been successful both
in Switzerland and Sweden,
While Ineke and Peter naturally became
an important part of the club’s leadership.
Now they will be officials at O-Ringen
Smålandskusten 2024, where Ineke and
Peter will be helping with Competitor
Services and maybe also with first aid in the
forest (they’re professionals!). We put some
questions to the family.
When and why did you
move to Oskarshamn?
Ineke: We started our move here in summer
2021 and by the time school started in August
that year, the whole family were here.
Peter: I have had a connection to Sweden
for the last 30 years, ever since I orienteered
here. As well as that, Ineke’s family also had
a holiday cottage near Åseda, so we have
spent our Christmas and summer holidays
here. Six or seven years ago, on a summer
holiday, we travelled to Gotland and saw on
an advertisement that the island was looking
for doctors. That was when we first had the
idea of moving to Sweden. We were finding
that the work culture in Switzerland wasn’t
something we wanted to be caught up in
for the next 20 years. We also liked Sweden
and our holidays here. So we contacted the
doctors’ organisation in Småland and Oskarshamn
ended up being the most suitable
place to live and work.
When did you start orienteering?
Peter: I started orienteering when I was ten
but then had a long break until around five
or six years ago.
Ineke: The family has orienteered together
for around five or six years.
Is orienteering in Sweden
similar or different to Switzerland?
Peter/Ineke: Of course, many things are the
same: the race procedure, the controls and
the maps. Many of the forests in Switzerland
have lots of big tracks and greener areas.
There are also many steep areas. The forests
in Småland are usually much less hilly but
more detailed. In Sweden a lot of activities for
juniors are organised at club level, whereas
this is usually done regionally in Switzerland.
Sanna: I’ve saved all my prizes. One of them
is a piece of wood. It feels like orienteering
is more popular in Sweden, where the other
kids at school have at least some idea of
what it is.
What are your best
orienteering memories?
Everyone: O-Ringen in Kolmården, 2019.
Sanna: And one sprint race in a park in
Switzerland, which was really nice.
Do you have any orienteering heroes?
Sanna: Simona Aebersold
Marit: Hanna Lundberg
What are your favourite
places in Oskarshamn?
Marit: Nilssons bakery
Ineke: Uvö, being so close to the forest at
Havslätt, Blå Jungfrun
Sanna: The beach at Havslätt
Peter: Djupeträsk and Eckern
How have you found the social aspects
of moving to a new country?
Ineke/Peter: The club are like a family and
often meet up outside of orienteering. We
work mostly in Kalmar and we have some
friends there, through work. Some of them
are orienteers, too.
Marit and Sanna: The club has a good group
of W14s who train together and even do
extra training. We also have a lot of friends
at school.
People from Switzerland often pick up
Swedish very quickly. What’s your secret?
Ineke: Lots of Swiss runners go to orienteering
schools in Sweden and compete for
Nordic clubs.
Sanna: To start with I just tried to listen and
learn bit by bit until I could use the words
myself. It also helped that we already spoke
German and a lot of words are similar to
Swedish.
Peter: But the prepositions are still a
problem after two years!
Sanna. Photo: Johfors Productions AB.
Direction 2030
– everyone has a right to take part
Direction 2030 is the strategy of
Swedish orienteering and describes
our vision: Swedish orienteering – for
everyone, throughout their life. The
strategy covers both our general aims
and areas for action, with our basic
principles and core values as a guide.
Direction 2030 aims to inspire and
encourage us to dare to change and
develop towards 2030.
One of our basic principles is that “everyone
has a right to take part”. This means,
everyone who wants to join in and orienteer
can do so, whatever their circumstances.
Orienteering welcomes everyone, regardless
of their background or ambition. We work
for equality and inclusion and place a high
value on working together. The idea that
orienteering is a lifelong sport for all life’s
stages can be seen in practical terms by our
range of age classes and open classes. Orienteering
should bring inspiration and joy
to everyone, throughout their life. Here are
four examples of how we are working actively
with our vision “for everyone, throughout
their life” and our principle “everyone has a
right to take part”.
Exemptions for large scale maps for people
with eye injuries and visual impairments
Do you have a documented eye
injury or visual impairment that is
not age related? If so, you can apply
for an exemption from the Swedish
Orienteering Federation for larger
scale maps.
A successful exemption allows competition
organisers to work round competition rules
when it comes to map scale. Organisers,
however, are not obliged to contribute extra
time and work to allow larger map scales
for participants. Contacting the organiser
in good time before a competition means
there is a greater chance they will be able
to order an adapted map. The larger the
competition, the more notice is required,
as arranging and ordering maps is a longer
process. Remember to attach proof of your
exemption when contacting the organiser.
How to apply for an exemption:
• Describe the injury.
• Attach a certificate from a doctor.
• Email this information to Niklas Wrane
(niklas.wrane@orientering.se).
How to order your map from
O-Ringen if you have an exemption:
• Go to O-Ringen’s booking portal to register
yourself and the class you would like
to participate in
• Email your exemption and your order for
an adapted map to info@oringen.se by
7th April
Kompassriktning 2030
Orienteering map norms are
the result of many years of
development, and they have
considered some forms of
colour blindness.
N
For instance, the red colour that
many people have difficulty
seeing is not used and symbols
in different colours have different
shapes so they don’t get mixed
up. There has not, however, been
any scientific analysis of how
maps are read when colours are
seen differently.
Therefore, with economic
support from Skogssportens
Gynnare and Kartringen, the
Swedish Orienteering Federation
is starting a project whose results
will also be shared with the International
Orienteering Federation.
The aim is to develop a norm for
orienteering maps which works
for as many people as possible,
regardless of your colour vision.
S
New project assessing
orienteering maps and
colour blindness
Janne completed 3 stages with only 2% vision
Jan “Janne” Thorin, 43, from Karlstad
has found a new sport: orienteering.
After having an eye problem when
he was 14, Janne now has only 2%
vision. “It’s like swimming in murky
water,” he says.
So how do you orienteer?
– No problem, if like Janne you like a
challenge, but one or two adaptations are
needed.
Using enlarged maps at scale 1:1,800,
Janne took part in the final three stages
of O-Ringen in Åre, accompanied by a
guide. The guide’s job was to make it easier
for Janne to get about on rough paths and
through the forest.
In Åre Janne did the Easy 3.5 km course
on two stages and the Easy 5.0 km course on
one stage. The courses were divided over 8–9
A4 and A3 maps, one for each leg. His guide
helped him change maps at each control.
Proud and happy
Janne was happy and proud after completing
the three stages.
– I never thought I would experience the
feeling of freedom you get from being able
to orienteer through the terrain. And then
O-Ringen and the Swedish Orienteering
Federation’s work with Direction 2030
has resulted in a clear vision that
everyone with a visual impairment,
or intellectual or physical disability,
should be able to compete in the world’s
biggest orienteering competition.
In an evaluation of this year’s Para-I class,
competitors have shared many positive experiences
from Åre. The experience has left
the strongest impression, being one of the
15,000 orienteers who took on the challenge
through hailstorms and wet marshes, and
sharing the memories with clubmates.
When we ask Eva Dahlberg about her
most vivid memory from the summer’s
O-Ringen, say replies somewhat
despondently, but with a glint in her eye:
“The medals… Henrik had the medals out
on the kitchen table at home for over a
month and nobody was allowed to touch
them.” Eva is talking about Henrik Berglund,
I never thought
I would
experience
the feeling of
freedom you get
from being able
to orienteer
to get the chance to experience O-Ringen,
with so many competitors, buses to the
arenas and walking to the arenas together
with thousands of other orienteers was really
special, says Janne.
More orienteering
He’s still orienteering and, following
O-Ringen, Janne has been orienteering in
Para athletes welcome at O-Ringen Smålandskusten
her partner and fellow competitor in the
Para-I class, who won every stage. We hardly
need to ask what Henrik remembers.
– The prize givings, interviews and
meeting other prize winners. And having to
write autographs, says a smiling Henrik.
It’s clear that he’s proud to compete in the
Para-I class and has already started planning
his travel and accommodation for O-Ringen
Smålandskusten. By then, Eva and Henrik
are hoping that the Para-I class will have
more competitors.
Värmland in OK Tyr’s club colours. Now he
is looking for sponsors to help him continue
orienteering.
– I’m entitled to a guide to can help me train
and compete within the Karlstad area, but not
to anything further away. Orienteering means
a lot to me. It has really motivated me to train
and to live a healthy life, both physically and
mentally, finishes Janne.
– We saw that there were some other para
athletes at O-Ringen who chose to compete
in other classes. They are welcome in the
Para-I class!
Ahead of this year’s O-Ringen, the
Para-I class is part of the plan from the
very beginning and all para athletes who
are curious about an adapted orienteering
adventure can read about the open Para-I
class on the website. The courses have a
“Very easy” difficulty level and the map is a
simplified 1:5,000 orienteering map.
World class network
thanks to
Organising O-Ringen requires a whole range of skills.
One area with which O-Ringen has chosen to have some
external help since 2018 is the wifi. Ever since the
O-Ringen Höga Kusten 2018, Bluecom have provided wifi
for competitors and central network infrastructure both
at O-Ringen City and at each arena.
O-Ringen City and the arenas are all large areas and coverage for
the whole of these areas is not possible. So the wifi network focuses
on covering O-Ringen Square, including competitor services and
the sports shops, as well as smaller areas around service stations at
the campsite and kiosks, sports shops and competitor services at
the arenas.
Even in small areas, the equipment can support large numbers of
users, i.e. a couple of hundred people via each access point, without
any real congestion. Altogether, it can support several thousand
users at the same time, something which would not be possible
with home equipment.
– O-Ringen is an exciting and challenging event for us. The multiple
arenas, which can be difficult to access, require good planning
Photo: Peter Holgersson.
and close collaboration with Magnus and his team, something that
we find works very well, says Hans Areskoug of Bluecom.
Bluecom also provides the firewalls required to connect O-Ringen
Square and the arenas to the internet in a secure way. Traffic in the
network is sorted to separate competitor wifi from priority traffic
from the competition administration and kiosk payment terminals.
– Our watchwords are flexibility and surpassing expectations.
We’re good at supporting this kind of event, where an agile organising
team is needed, with technically skilled project managers as
well as technicians in the field who also have experience when it
comes to this kind of event, adds Hans Areskoug.
O-Ringen’s IT Manager Magnus Johansson explains:
– Thanks to Bluecom’s equipment and skilled personnel, we can
provide competitors with a stable and reliable wireless network.
Competitors can make orders and entries, see results, pay using
Swish, send pictures to their friends and family, or just surf. At
the same time, our competition administration and other internal
systems are guaranteed the capacity they need to provide results,
audio broadcasts and more. Of course, we also need some volunteer
officials to work with IT, but having Bluecom’s experienced
personnel on location whenever we need them gives a sense of
security, adds Magnus.
Hackathon at O-Ringen this summer
– What happens now?
At this summer’s O-Ringen, we held a Hackathon that
aimed to pose questions and spark discussion on
sustainability and orienteering for young people. The
Hackathon played an important part in the work of
Swedish orienteering with regard to sustainability and
was held with help from the Youth 2030 Movement.
VÄLKOMMEN
ATT TRIVAS
HOS OSS
There were a total of 40 participants, of whom 32 were young
people. The decision makers who attended were mostly
representatives from the Swedish Orienteering Federation,
O-Ringen and Bagheera.
Participants worked in small groups of around five, with eight
groups in total. They followed a process that started with understanding
a challenge, then brainstorming solutions, developing
ideas and lastly a visual presentation. There were five challenges:
travel, material, school orienteering, the sport’s (lack of) visibility
and inequality in circumstances.
Are you curious about what we came up with?
– We’re seeing that the ideas coming from the Hackathon and the
summer’s idea workshops (which took place at the Rikslägret camp
in Idre and at the confirmation camps in Sälen and Eksjö) are consistent
with each other. Young people see clear synergies between
transport and material issues and social and ecological sustainability,
but otherwise we can say that the type of sustainability young
people are most focused on is social sustainability. It’s clear that
young people think the most important aspect for this is being able
to orienteer wherever you are, and getting more people interested,
says Anna Wennertorp from O-Ringen.
– School orienteering is clearly an important subject for young
orienteers. It was the area most groups wanted to work with – even
in groups who were working on other areas, many people touched
on this topic in their own discussions.
Flexibility and the idea that schools should “understand” and
implement the things that make orienteering fun are two key ways
to improve young people’s experience of orienteering at school.
It’s worth saying that digitalisation and digital solutions are not
seen by young people to be so important. When talking to young
people at O-Ringen before the hackathon – when we talked
about, for example, launching a lift sharing app – many people
underlined that solutions like this were already being used, or
that people didn’t think they would work as people won’t use
them, continues Anna.
Where do we go from here?
– In three upcoming episodes of the O-Ringen podcast will focus
on young people and the following topics; travel, school orienteering
and inequality in circumstances, finishes Anna.
Would you and one or more friends like to join in?
Send us an email atradio@oringen.se describing briefly what you
would like to talk about, who you would like to join you and where
you’re from, and maybe you’ll get your own podcast episode!
Europe. The smoke house was founded in the early 1950s.
Vattenpalatset – Mönsterås
Challenge a friend or colleague on a water slide that times you.
Swim against the current in the jet stream channel, or in the lagoon.
You can also take your time in the relaxation area.
Blå Jungfrun and its many legends
The island of countless legends, Blå Jungfrun (“The Blue
Maiden”), also known as Blåkulla, is a granite dome
towering 86 metres above sea level right out in the
middle of Kalmarsund. It has sparked people’s curiosity
and imagination since ancient times. Don’t miss the
opportunity to visit this national park.
Magical nature
In the summer you can visit Blå Jungfrun on a day trip from
Oskarshamn and Byxelkrok, or on your own boat. Its isolation and
inaccessibility make Blå Jungfrun an exciting destination. You are
met with multilevel terrain. Walkways guide you round the island
and lead you to a lush arbour of ancient, tall and gnarled trees,
fascinating caves where small entrances open up into huge caverns,
and geological formations. On one of Blå Jungfrun’s clifftops there
is a labyrinth that you can walk round to wish for fertility, good
luck with fishing or perhaps a calm sea for the journey back? If you
climb to the highest point on Blå Jungfrun you are met with panoramic
views of coast of the mainland, Kalmar Strait and Öland,
well worth the journey.
Don’t tempt fate
If you go to Blå Jungfrun, remember not to put any of the small
stones in your pocket as a souvenir. The stories say that anyone
who takes a stone from Blå Jungfrun will be plagued by bad luck
until the stone is returned. In fact, every year Oskarshamn municipality
receives stones from regretful tourists who have decided
against tempting fate. And every year, they make sure to take these
stones back to the island in Kalmar Strait. It’s just safest that way.
Book your visit
During the summer, you can take a boat tour to Blå Jungfrun on
M/S Solkust or M/S Solfrun. These tours leave from Oskarshamn
and Byxelkrok. Look around the amazing rock formations and
caves, explore the enchanting labyrinth and visit the beautiful
stone beach. www.solkustturer.se
Many myths
Perhaps the island’s lonely location has been the reason why so
many legends have been told about its history. The rugged beauty
of the rock formations, formed by inland ice, has given rise to
much speculation about what might go on there, out at sea in
one of Sweden’s most famous national parks. And of course your
imagination can run wild thinking of all that has happened here,
on an island that was already inhabited in the Stone Age. In times
gone past, people thought a godlike being lived on the island.
Seafarers, who have been hit by storms here more than anywhere
else, thought of Blåkulla as especially dangerous. They have steered
clear of this place for a long time and there are countless stories
about it. The most well-known and enduring myth is probably
the one that witches fly to Blåkulla every Maundy Thursday for a
witches’ sabbath.
Tourist information
You can read everything you need to know before your visit to Blå
Jungfrun National Park on sverigesnationalparker.se, for example,
rules you may need to know before your trip.
Welcome to Jönköping 2025!
Photos: Destination Jonköping.
Along the southern shores of Vättern stretches
Småland’s biggest city. This is where town meets country
in perfect harmony. Whether you’re born and raised here
or this is your very first visit, there’s a lot to experience
here. This region is a paradise for nature lovers, with one
of Sweden’s largest oak forests, nature reserves, walking
routes, refreshing dips in the crystal clear waters of
Vättern, wide open views and charming country lanes to
cycle along. Wherever you find yourself in the city, the
countryside is always close. Welcome to Jönköping!
Jönköping invites you to a first class O-Ringen City. Located at
Rosenlund next to Elmia exhibition centre and with stunning
views across Vättern, we are please to offer a compact and central
concept, with O-Ringen Square and the campsite side by side.
There are bathing areas within walking distance: an indoor adventure
pool and Vättern outdoors. An obstacle course, bowling,
skatepark and padel are just a few of the other activities available
within a kilometre of O-Ringen City.
A city full of life
Jönköping has an international college and 140,000 inhabitants,
and is buzzing with life all year round. The city centre has
picturesque avenues and canals which open out onto three lakes:
Vättern, Munksjön and Rocksjön. If you want to wander round
the old town, explore local shops or enjoy good food and drink,
the Matchstick area (Tändsticksområdet) is the place for you. The
whole area is classed as a listed building and has a long history,
which you can experience especially at the Match Museum.
Proximity to nature is another major advantage of our destination.
With its soft paths, beautiful views, John Bauer forests, wide
marshlands, lakes and hillsides, the southern Vättern area is the
perfect place to explore.
The shores of Vättern
Right in the middle of Jönköping you’ll find Vätterstranden, a
beach and bathing area with a seaside feel and fantastic views.
From O-Ringen City you can follow the cycleway for a few
kilometres along Vättern, into the centre of Jönköping, where
shopping, culture and a wide variety of restaurants await. With its
whole kilometre of shoreline, Vätternstranden has room for everyone,
as well as clean and clear water and a sandy beach. If it’s too
cold for a dip in the lake, there are lawns, activities and restaurants
nearby. Why not play volleyball on one of the beach volleyball
pitches, have a play at the playground or ride along the beautiful
path by the lake, enjoying the views by bike. If you cycle a couple of
kilometres in the opposite direction you’ll get to Huskvarna, where
among other things you can visit Husqvarna Factory Museum,
have coffee and cake at Brunstorps Gård and go on to Äppledalen,
known as “Småland’s answer to Tuscany”, with its local food entrepreneurs
and attractions.
Cycling in Jönköping
All around Jönköping you can find everything from beautiful
country lanes to challenging hills and endless gravel rides.
Whether you’re looking to really dig in up a hill or enjoy a gentle
outing on gravel, we have something for you. There’s a wealth of
places to discover. At Huskvarnaberget nature reserve, with its
beautiful views over Huskvarna and Jönköping, you can find the
popular mountain bike arena at IKHP, which offers flowing tracks,
drops and some challenging climbs up the slalom hill. There’s the
EuroMTB 2016 track and many others to test. Hallbystugan, just
to the west of Jönköping, is well-known among mountain bikers.
Here you will find tracks for all ages and abilities. Don’t miss their
pump track! At Gränna you can cycle on looping trails as well as
try out the exciting enduro tracks up on Grännaberget. Both IKHP
and Hallbystugan will be visited by everyone competing in MTBO
at O-Ringen.
Three unique experiences
in and around Jönköping
Here are some attractions you’ll definitely want to visit
during your stay in Jönköping and the surrounding area. Of
course there are many more destinations and experiences
but here are three you really won’t want to miss.
Tabergsgruvan
Iron ore was mined here from the 15th century, right up until the
1950s The seam itself, however, was formed some 1,200 million
years ago. During the summer you can take a guided tour here.
You will also find the only bat museum in Sweden at the mine.
Rosenlund Rosarium
Right next to O-Ringen City you will find Rosenlund Hall and
Rosenlund Rosarium, which among other things has 550 varieties
of rose. In 2022, Rosenlund Rosarium won the distinction Award
of Garden Excellence and became the first rose garden in Sweden
to be listed as one of the best rose gardens in the world to visit.
Bake some Polkagris rock
In the middle of the 19th century, Amalia Erikson created a variety
of rock confectionery that went on to become Gränna’s most
famous export and one of Sweden’s most popular souvenirs. Today,
there are around a dozen kitchens in Gränna where you can see the
process. Here the sugar is boiled, stretched, kneaded and twisted
just like in Amalia’s time and at some of the kitchens you can even
have a go at baking your own Polkagris stick of rock.
Terrain that’s waiting for you
Another side of Småland awaits
In our effort to bring you interesting competition areas,
we have of course sought after traditional inland Småland
terrain, alongside finding areas that are suitable for
everyone. Younger and older. Recreational and elite
runners. There will be some steeper hills, denser areas
and wooded marshes, but overall runnability will be good
and we will throw in some twists here and there, such as
negative contour detail or vague, flatter areas. Remember
that you make your own route choices!
More to come
As O-Ringen Jönköping 2025 comes closer, we will release more
information about the terrain. Maybe it will be presented in a new
way…?
We will also help you by giving tips on how to tackle the navigational
challenges.
You have to stay on the ball. You can move very quickly in places but the
terrain has areas of more complex contours, where you’ll need to slow
down and take more care.
After the Smålandskusten, we’re going… back to Småland.
The tagline “Another Småland” has already been taken by
Nässjö but it works well here, too. From the coast to the
land. From sea to lake. From the small town to the big city.
Are the same clubs organising?
– No. Småland is a large area with many active clubs. None of the
clubs are helping at both. We will, however, learn a lot from the
Smålandskusten and their experiences, says Måns Lennermo, the
Project Manager for O-Ringen Jönköping 2025.
What about the terrain?
– This will also be very different. The coastal terrain will be
swapped for inland terrain. Mature, magical Småland forest. A
moraine landscape with larger hill shapes, to give some examples
of the differences,” says Måns.
But some things must be similar?
– Of course there are some similarities. We can also offer great
attractions near the competitions and five stages across all disciplines.
Then there’s having the traditional campsite and O-Ringen
City in the same place, says Måns.
And will the competitors enjoy all this?
– Of course! That was clear from our stand in Åre. People really
appreciate that we are able to provide a compact and central
concept, focusing on the campsite. The fact that there are bathing
areas within walking distance, the whole of Vätterstranden and
everything that a city like Jönköping can offer within a few kilometres
is something we are very proud of and are looking forward
to sharing, says Måns.
And how are preparations going generally?
– We are finalising agreements with landowners. The organising
team is taking shape well. In theory, most of the tasks are already
assigned. Excitement is starting to bubble among our officials.
Everyone wants to know more, to get stuck into their roles, to
welcome you. But for now it’s time to be patient and keep working
away steadily, finishes Måns.
Welcome to Gothenburg 2026
Come to Gothenburg for world class sport
– find a delicious reason to stay!
show jumping competition. Take your place in
the stands and enjoy world class dressage and
show jumping.
Poppels City Brewery
Poppels City Brewery is a unique food and
beer experience in one of Gothenburg’s most
exciting neighbourhoods. At the newly built
Platinan at Hisingsbron you’ll find the world’s
largest oak barrel pilsner brewery and a restaurant
with room for over 170 guests. The restaurant
is working towards circular solutions, with
a menu built around sustainability, plant-based
food and bread.
It’s almost 20 years since Gothenburg last hosted O-Ringen
and in 2026 it’s time for it to return!
No fewer than 17 Gothenburg clubs are joining forces to organise
O-Ringen 2026. From the big clubs like Göteborg-Majorna OK,
IFK Göteborg and Sävedalens AIK, to smaller ones such as IK
Stern, IK Marin Väst and many others.
In recent years, Gothenburg has built up a wealth of experience
in organising big orienteering events, including the Junior World
Championships, World Masters Championships, Swedish Championships,
10-MILA and most recently the Swedish Sprint Championships
in 2022. We are taking all this valuable experience into our
O-Ringen preparations.
Our own local experience combined with the collective experience
of the O-Ringen team is a winning formula for a successful
O-Ringen 2026.
O-Ringen City will be at Stora Holm, Hisingen, a rural idyll only a short
distance away from each competition stage and the buzz of the city.
Stora Holm is normally a training facility for drivers and includes a
skidpan, but for one week it will be transformed into O-Ringen City,
with room for 2000 camping pitches. It will be a compact O-Ringen
City, close to restaurants, O-Ringen Square and other facilities.
There is also a good electricity supply, which means we will be
able to supply many camping pitches with electricity.
O-Ringen 2026 will offer exciting competition areas, with a
very Gothenburg feel, for both Orienteering, MTBO and Trail-O
classes. Work is underway this autumn to find the areas that can
provide the perfect challenge for everyone. We are hoping to be
able to offer a stage featuring classic coastal terrain.
There will be around 1200 of us Gothenburgers in orange T-shirts,
doing all we can to make sure you have a fantastic overall experience.
A warm welcome to Gothenburg!
you would have to wait a little while in our bar. Or on our roof
REGISTRATION GUIDE O-RINGEN SMÅLANSKUSTEN 2024
REGISTRATION GUIDE O-RINGEN SMÅLANSKUSTEN 2024
O-Ringens biggest and most classic competition is
to compete over five days.
The winner for many of the classes is determined
by an exciting chasing start on the final day of
competition, available for Foot-O and Trail-O.
MAIN CLASSES
Our five-day main classes are most popular. You have an allocated,
timed start. Our youngest competitors get an introduction to
orienteering with the Inskolning class, where you can start when you
want and everyone gets a prize, and the results only show who has
taken part, with no times or positions. The competition is decided on
the final day with a chasing start for everyone except Inskolning and
DH10–DH12.
New for O-Ringen 2024, DH75 and older have a free minute start,
which means you choose a start minute when you get to the start.
PARA-I
5-DAYS
Para-I is for anyone with an intellectual disability. The difficulty
level of the class is green (very easy).
The Para-I class is available on all five days, and as a chasing
start. It is open to anyone with an IQ of under 75, the equivalent
to attending a special school or having LSS support in Sweden.
You do not need a Parapsports licence to compete. The Para-I
course is very easy and is around 2 km. All five stages are foot
RECREATIONAL CLASSES
Compete on easier courses in classes according to age and sex. Start
when you want every day and no chasing start on the final day.
TRAIL-O CLASSES
In the Trail-O competition map knowledge is
in focus. Each control has up to five alternate
control markers. You must remotely determine
which control marker is correctly placed
according to the control ring on the map and
the control description. You compete in a class
determined by its difficulty level, rather than
age and gender. The competition takes place in
easily passable terrain.
route choice decisions. The maps are like those used in Foot-O. The
biggest difference is how paths and tracks are marked. They show
how easy they are to ride on. Put simply, the longer the dashes on
LEVELS OF DIFFICULTY - MAIN-, SHORT-, RECREATIONAL- AND OPEN CLASSES
Moderate
Moderate
Difficult
Difficult
The course is in terrain with clear and connected features such as roads, larger paths, buildings and open land. The controls on a
green course must always be placed on handrails and must provide reassurance that the competitor is following the correct route.
Control features may be path bends, path junctions, telegraph posts, buildings or other clear features or objects.
The terrain is the same as for green courses, i.e. clear and connected features, e.g. roads, larger paths, open land and buildings. The
controls on a white course must mark only the end of one leg and the start of the next. The control features must therefore be easily
identified and distinct. As well as green course features, controls on white courses may also be on e.g. boulders, crags, fences and
similar features.
Yellow courses can be in more difficult terrain but runnability and visibility must still be good. The terrain must have a connected
network of roads, paths, fences, waterways, open areas etc. Control points may be on more difficult features, for example on the top
of a very distinct hill, but must always have a clear attack point. There must be a clear catching feature behind controls.
Orange and red courses must use runnable terrain, with gentler hills and forest, preferably with areas of cultivated land. Terrain
details must be clear. Compared to green, white and yellow courses, more difficult control features may be used, for example larger
re-entrants, distinct ridges, hills and crags. There must be a clear feature a maximum of 200 m before the control and a clear catching
feature behind it.
Same as for orange courses but you can encounter all types of terrain.
All types of terrain may be used. Very physically tough terrain should be avoided. All types of control feature may be used. Compared
to orange and red courses, purple courses place higher demands on, planning skills, choosing quick routes ahead of safe routes and
finding controls without clear catching features behind them.
On blue and black courses, the difficulty should always suit skilled orienteers, even if anyone can compete. The increased difficulty
level compared to other courses is because more of the orienteering uses contour features, detailed terrain and smaller features.
Same as for blue courses but you can encounter all types of terrain.

that is offered at O-Ringen; Foot-O, MTBO and Trail-O.
For our younger orienteers we offer Introduction and U-classes.
Theese classes can also be booked for 5 days main- and short classes.
Free start times apply to everyone so you can start when it suits
For MTBO, both orienteering technical difficulty and cycling
technical difficulty are indicated. Class/Course indicates the
orienteering technical difficulty. Bicycle level indicates the bicycle
technical difficulty.
If you are new to the sport of orienteering, you can get help with
