C L O C K H A N D S Clock on the Petrovaradin Fortress churches in Srem. It coincided somehow that precisely then, when he clock started working, the church also came to life in other ways. Reconstruction of the roof was necessary. – A working clock would be in vain if the church roof is leaking – said Jovan and shrugged. – With the help from donations, as well as funds provided by the provincial government, the roof was repaired. Step by step, things are being solved. There is still a lot of work before the village church board, but things are now in motion and that is important. It will be easier now. WORKS ON ITS OWN, AS THE TIME GOES BY – Already in 1912, the village clock on the Church of St. Nicholas stopped at twenty minutes to twelve. It stayed there until 2001. The then president of the local community Mali Radinci, in a desire to do something good for his village, initiated a repair of the old winding mechanism. The clock worked for a year, but they had to hire a man to come by once a day to wind it. When a year passed, the church clock stopped again, like before. And then, last year, the village priest came to me and asked me: can we do something to make the clock work again, but without having to hire someone to wind it? And so it started all over again. Jovan repaired the old mechanism, but in such a manner that nobody had to come and wind it. However, he said, a new question appeared: what happens when the power goes out? – I solved this by using a battery – he continues. – I made the entire scheme, installed the adapter. The work was financed by the village Church Board. Jovan took us to the church, and showed how the mechanism works. He expressed gratitude to the young village priest, who has done a lot for the village in only one Hardworking and Honest People Are in Demand Again While showing us the mechanism in the Church of St. Nicholas, Jovan Kovačević gently smiled and somehow glowed. He was proud for having given his contribution. He worked previously as a bus driver, retired as an employee of “Rumekon” from Ruma, which is a container producer. The owner of that company still seeks advice from him. It may not be fashionable, but hardworking and honest people will again be increasingly in demand. year, as Jovan says. It is all in vain, he says, if there is no one to get things going. A good will and positive energy are the drivers of everything. – I am a mechanic by profession, but since I can remember I have loved these mechanisms and electronics. Engineer Aca Jelić from Ruma and I repair the church clocks together. We worked in the congregational churches and temples in Belgrade and Novi Sad, and wherever we were invited. When we estimate that there is no possibility for a quality repair, as was the case in Platičevo, then do not take the job, but we advise people to buy a new mechanism. In Futog we mounted scaffolding, climbed a lot, but we managed to do what was needed. We are satisfied. In Mali Radinci, it was possible for me to work at home. I took the mechanism weighing about three hundred kilograms apart, and brought it into my workshop. It is of very good quality and expensive. Its castings were made in Budapest in the 18 th century, from real bronze, and it was not worn at all. At that time, they really did not try to save money on such things. IT IS WORTH MUCH, BUT DOES NOT COST MUCH Jovan Kovačević has golden hands, skilled in old and rare craft. He has managed to start the old system of the church clock, by applying more recent solutions, but by keeping the authenticity. The story about this master is a story about a village in Srem that has to be imaginative to make things go for the better. It does not sit and wait for solutions to arrive from afar. – They asked me from the Church Board how much the repair of the clock would cost. I said that I would do it for the village, and it would not cost anything. According to my calculations, the clock was delayed twenty seconds on an annual basis. As the clock is returning, it would be reduced to ten seconds, which is negligible. And then it turned out, for the New Year’s Eve, that the clock is accurate in a second. Everyone called me to tell me that – Jovan says and smiles, almost boyishly. – People did not believe, but the truth is that the hands and the entire mechanism are driven by the engine that runs window wipers on a Yugo. I bought three in Ruma, for 4,500 dinars. I would have taken some more, but couldn’t find them. They are old, but they work great. s 38 SRBIJA • BROJ 54 • 2016.
