Despot Stefan Lazarević, it was dedicated to St. Stefan the Martyr. Then, in Stephen’s despotate, the monastery had a particularly important role, because it was located in immediate vicinity of the old capital. There is also reference to the then Abbot Vasilije, who visited Jerusalem. The fate of the sanctuary, as elsewhere, is closely connected with the history and fate of the Serbian people. Every time people were suffering, the monastery was also destroyed. During the Great Migration under the Patriarch Arsenije Čarnojević, the local monks were also forced to flee. They took what they could and headed toward Fruška Gora. Only after the Požarevac Treaty (1718), they returned to Slanci, renovated the monastery as much as it was possible and continued to live here. HISTORY OF SUFFERING AND ELEVATION – The monastery then continued to vegetate until 1834, when it was deserted and collapsed – continued Abbot Andrej. – Two churches were erected from this material: St. Elias in Mirijevo and the Holy Archdeacon Stefan in Slanci. In1833, when prince Miloš Obrenović ordered him to make an inventory of churches and monasteries in the vicinity of Belgrade, Joakim Vujić writes that Abbot Damaskin received him very cordially in Slanci. Vujić describes the church with two domes, says that the previous one was repaired, but was later abandoned and collapsed. It remained like this until 1905, when villagers built a rectangular chapel, probably on the foundations of the old church. Later, in 1969, Patriarch German built this apse and a small dormitory. Then, for St. Patron’s Day, for the consecration of the monastery, Nikanor, vice-abbot of Hilandar also arrived, with several monks. They brought as a gift of an icon of the Three-Handed Virgin, painted and consecrated in Hilandar. With the blessing of Patriarch German, the monastery of Slanci was then declared an appendage of Hilandar. After World War II, it was not easy to establish a greater brotherhood in Slanci, because in the communist Yugoslavia the monastery land had been confiscated. To Live Truthfully After the liturgy: lighting candles and meal in the monastery dining room Wonderful spiritual lessons of noble Russian elders of Municipal are compiled in the book “Live Truthfully”. It is a true and effective guide to non-hypocritical and humble life “on the path to Christ and in Christ”. Prof. Janja Todorović, an Orthodox publicist, gave a lecture about this in Slanci this week. SERBIA • N O 55 • 2016 29
