metamorphosis from egg to caterpillar
to chrysalis to moth is an amazing feat.
In each stage there is a sac or external
covering containing bodily fluids,
which changes to a chrysalis with even
more but different fluids, then when the
time is right those fluids emerge into
spectacular flying insects. The changes
are more than miraculous, if you have
time to stand and stare, or watch it on
YouTube as many do these days.
I am off on a short break down and
around the mid-west near to Shrewsbury
and Telford, where, rumour has it,
the local authorities have got their
heads together and have a contractor
that takes off the grass (and weed)
sward at the sides of the roads, all
of them twice in the season. The cut
vegetation is collected and taken to a
local biomass burner to make electricity
and a portion of the money made
from the process comes back to the

local authorities. What a good idea!
That guarantees a clean cut with no
mowings to block up the surface water
drains and the community gains by
getting some money back from the
scheme. No-one took up the idea of
planting roundabouts and grass verges
at junctions with wild flower seeds and
by reducing the number of mowings
making these junctions really beautiful
as they do in the Cotswolds. One small
area in Scothern has been seeded this
way. It will look a lot better after the
second seeding when it will sustain
itself as the Cotswold verges have done
now for some five years or more.
The William Farr Woods saga is still
very much on-going. There are many
voices in protest at what the school
has done and the general feeling is that
we have been robbed of a community
asset and a rural park and nature
reserve all in one. I am being helped
