In July we attended the inaugural
Melanoma Patients Conference
in Bristol. Imogen Cheese put
this together, herself diagnosed
with a melanoma, bringing
together patients, medics, researchers and
drug companies. The conference gave an
opportunity for updating knowledge and
networking, but more importantly gave a
forum for discussion between those
diagnosed with this particular form of skin
cancer.
It’s a pity it has taken a voluntary organisation
with support from independent charities
to arrange such a meeting, there being
no ‘national’ health service/governmentled
commitment to create a coordinated
approach to support those diagnosed with
this disease.
It is clear that up to 85% of malignant
melanoma are cured through surgery. This
demonstrates that early identification is the
key, not only to remove the problem and
save lives, but also to reduce costs to the
NHS.

It was coincidental that on the same day
NICE (The National Institute for Health
and Care Excellence) approved the use of
a combination of two drugs for late stage
melanoma. These drugs (Ipilimumab &
Nivolumab) work with the immune system,
having been used separately for a few years;
trials on a combination of the two have
shown a high level of success in shrinking
and even eradicating tumours. These will
now be available for those diagnosed with
late stage melanoma nationally.
‘Some moles are dangerous’; if you see any
changes in shape, colour and size, or a new
mole developing get it looked at.
