In July we attended the inaugural<br />

Melanoma Patients Conference<br />

in Bristol. Imogen Cheese put<br />

this together, herself diagnosed<br />

with a melanoma, bringing<br />

together patients, medics, researchers and<br />

drug companies. The conference gave an<br />

opportunity for updating knowledge and<br />

networking, but more importantly gave a<br />

forum for discussion between those<br />

diagnosed with this particular form of skin<br />

cancer.<br />

It’s a pity it has taken a voluntary organisation<br />

with support from independent charities<br />

to arrange such a meeting, there being<br />

no ‘national’ health service/governmentled<br />

commitment to create a coordinated<br />

approach to support those diagnosed with<br />

this disease.<br />

It is clear that up to 85% of malignant<br />

melanoma are cured through surgery. This<br />

demonstrates that early identification is the<br />

key, not only to remove the problem and<br />

save lives, but also to reduce costs to the<br />

NHS.<br />

<strong>Welton</strong> NEWS<br />

It was coincidental that on the same day<br />

NICE (The National Institute for Health<br />

and Care Excellence) approved the use of<br />

a combination of two drugs for late stage<br />

melanoma. These drugs (Ipilimumab &<br />

Nivolumab) work with the immune system,<br />

having been used separately for a few years;<br />

trials on a combination of the two have<br />

shown a high level of success in shrinking<br />

and even eradicating tumours. These will<br />

now be available for those diagnosed with<br />

late stage melanoma nationally.<br />

‘Some moles are dangerous’; if you see any<br />

changes in shape, colour and size, or a new<br />

mole developing get it looked at.<br />
