Following recent feedback from patients<br />
we would like to clarify the position re<br />
our acute clinics which are held each<br />
weekday morning. The doors open at<br />
8am (this used to be later but was<br />
changed as a result of feedback and<br />
to allow patients to wait within the<br />
building rather than outside). The clinic<br />
does not start at 8am; doctors arriving<br />
in the practice have to deal with test<br />
results and other correspondence which<br />
arrive electronically overnight and may<br />
require urgent action before commencing<br />
surgery.<br />
These sessions commence at 8.30am<br />
each morning and bookings are accepted<br />
until 10am on a Monday and until<br />
9.15am Tuesday to Friday. This facility<br />
offers the opportunity to consult with<br />
a clinician without the need to book<br />
an appointment and is intended to deal<br />
with acute problems and minor illnesses,<br />
not on-going disease monitoring or<br />
chronic conditions. If a patient attends<br />
and is feeling very ill or has significant<br />
pain the receptionist should be advised<br />
immediately so that they can prioritise<br />
care appropriately. Due to time pressures<br />
it may not be possible to deal with more<br />
than one problem and a booked slot is<br />
advised if this is thought to be required.<br />

Patients are allocated equally between<br />
all clinicians working the acute clinic<br />
and staff manage these lists to ensure<br />
that delays are kept to a minimum. We<br />
are unable to offer a choice of doctor<br />
and if this is important then a booked<br />
appointment should be made. Not all<br />
doctors are available to consult at the<br />
acute clinic but where possible if a female<br />
or male is specifically requested we will<br />
try and accommodate. Confusion can<br />
occur when some patients appear to<br />
walk straight in and see the doctor whilst<br />
others have waited for some time but it is<br />
important to note that pre-booked clinics<br />
and nursing clinics are running alongside<br />
this service and therefore some patients<br />
are not booked into the acute clinic but<br />
actually have an appointment slot.<br />
We are aware that we cannot please<br />
everyone but over the years we have<br />
altered the timing and how we run these<br />
clinics as a result of listening to what<br />
patients ask for. We will continue to<br />
consider all suggestions for improvement<br />
and provide feedback as to whether<br />
we are able to respond positively or<br />
otherwise.<br />
We are pleased to offer appointments<br />
and advice for patients travelling abroad.<br />
Some immunisations are available on<br />
the NHS but others are only given on<br />
a private basis and therefore a charge<br />
will be made for these services. We are<br />
