The box of dreams
young self-made woman looks a little like
an outer-space creation herself – Leeloo,
perhaps, played by Milla Jovovich in the
sci-fi movie “The Fifth Element”.
From classroom to
boardroom
Nadja had been training as a photographer
at the Zurich University of the Arts when, in
2011, she was required to find a theme for
her bachelor’s project. She chose carpets,
seeing them as a way to apply her visual
work to something new using state-of-theart
technologies. She already had a subject,
too: she had been fascinated by space since
high school, where an inspirational physics
teacher had aroused her interest by using
the sunlight streaming into the classroom
and the airborne dust particles it illuminated
to illustrate the infinitesimal cosmic
smallness of our own Blue Planet.
Ever since, Nadja has been transfixed by
the sheer scale and scope of the secrets of
the universe that humanity would never be
able to uncover. And when she drew on
her fascination with space to create her
first carpet, “Nebula”, the response was
overwhelming. Everybody wanted one.
She promptly founded a start-up with
fellow student David Schönen: Schönstaub,
a blend of their two surnames. David
left after a year; but in her new partner
Ste phanie Aebischer, Nadja has a professional
interior decorator on board. And
while Nadja serves as art director and provides
the designs, 33-year-old Stephanie
focuses on the commercial side of things.
“We even have a Schönstaub hanging in
the Lesser Antilles, on the wall of a café on
Bonaire Island,” Stephanie says with pride.
“And our oldest customer is a lady of 94!”
In parallel to Schönstaub, Nadja continues
to earn her living from photography
and a further key passion: working as a
DJane at parties and clubs. So while her
carpets magically bring the heavens to
earth, her sounds help her audiences
escape their terrestrial toils …
