Section 10.29: Specialized Medical Equipment and Supplies<br />
Service Definition<br />
Specialized Medical Equipment and Supplies services are specialized medical equipment and supplies to<br />
include devices, controls, or appliances, specified in the POC, which enable individuals to increase their<br />
abilities to perform activities of daily living, or to perceive, control, or communicate with the environment in<br />
which they live and without which the individual would require institutionalization.<br />
The BDDS <strong>Waiver</strong> Unit must approve all specialized medical equipment and supplies prior to service being<br />
rendered.<br />
Reimbursable Activities<br />
Reimbursable activities under Specialized Medical Equipment and Supplies services include the following:<br />

Ancillary supplies and equipment needed for the proper functioning of specialized medical<br />

Vehicle modifications<br />
Communications devices<br />
Interpreter services<br />
Service Standards<br />
The following service standards apply to Specialized Medical Equipment and Supplies services:<br />

Equipment and supplies must be of direct medical or remedial benefit to the individual.<br />
All items shall meet applicable standards of manufacture, design, and installation.<br />
Any individual item costing more than $500 requires an evaluation by a qualified professional such<br />
as a physician, nurse, occupational therapist, physical therapist, speech and language therapist, or<br />
rehabilitation engineer.<br />
