Maverick Minutes Madhu Rao, Secretary December 7, 2011 Dear Fellow Mavericks, I would like to thank Wendy Shoffit, who wrote the following meeting minutes in my absence at this meeting. Wendy, thank you very much. Meeting began at 7:04 PM. John Hamilton started it out by announcing that the National Awards Chair, Tuffy Von Briesen, sent all presidents an email reminding them to start thinking about nominees for Region of the Year, Enthusiast, Family, Public Service, etc. So, he’s looking for nominations. He also reported for Christy Payne that we had 104 attendees at Founders Day. We made over $5000 for the Hope Shelter, not including the $500+ in gift cards received at the Holiday Party, at which there were 64+ in attendance. We decided to keep board meetings at Hackberry Creek this year, but are not going to have a meeting in July because it would conflict with Parade. Lastly, John reported that the Veteran’s Day group wants us to be yearly participants. He will keep in touch. Mike Brodigan announced that he has more help for DE’s, including Promotions Chair Pat Heptig. He also said hat they have a new one-day event format to couple with a Time Trial event. The April DE he wants on the 3.1 mile track at MSR. To help defray the costs, he will try to promote more and include other clubs. Linda Bambina suggested a women’s only DE group or mini event, which Mike will consider. Jack Griffin also suggested a teen driving school similar to BMW Club’s 8 “Street Survival.” That can’t be on a racetrack, though, and would be more like an Autocross event. Luke Edson said that the DE Equipment is mostly in good shape, except for needing some new “whip” antennas. Jim Falgout reported that we have money, with over $10K in receivables and $25K in the bank. Non-paying advertisers may be pulled from Slipstream. Richard Bradley said that Slipstream is moving right along. Although he is stepping down as editor, he wants to share some new ideas with the next editor (more about this later). Chris Christensen noted that since he is moving, he found his Happy Hour chair, Mike Farrar. Replacing Chris as Vice President is Tom Minnella. We will miss Chris and Ann. Tom Minnella received a flash drive with all the pertinent VP information from Chris and is all set. Jack Griffin reported that he has no official Concours dates set, but will work on it and include non PCA events on the calendar. Wendy Shoffit suggested the possibility of having a slightly more critical judging event, in case there are more serious Concours folks out there. Pat Friend continues gathering money from advertisers and is considering writing official advertising contracts for them to encourage more timely payments. Carey Spreen has agreed to replace Richard Bradley as next year’s editor of Slipstream. The only bad news is that now we need a new Rally chair, as Carey can’t do both! He has been pairing up with Sunday Drives, which seems to be successful. A full time Rally chair may not be necessary. Interested volunteers should contact him at rally@mavpca.org. Brendan Eagan is continuing to work with dealerships to get them to include PCA packets in their car sales. He wants to make sure they include cars such as Panameras and Cayennes, not just the sporty racecars. For Sunday drives, he continues to find solutions for navigation systems. John Harvey has purchased 2 additional GPSes to help keep the group on course. They are looking at making a drive that goes to Meacham Airport & Museum and ends finally at Joe T Garcia’s in Fort Worth. John Harvey mentioned that the latest Wine Tour and Rally was a great event. He looks forward to having a new rally chair include a Hare and Hound event possibly in March. Rick Schwausch is wanting to get more involved in volunteering for the club, like his friend Mike Farrar. He reported for Mike that the December HH will be at Bavarian Grill in Plano, January at Wildwood Grill in Southlake, and February at Ruggeri’s in north Dallas. The goal is to have several couples host a few HH’s during the year to reduce the burden on everyone. Linda Bambina reported that the 50th Anniversary events are coming right along in their planning stages. She mentioned such events as a Cinco de Mayo at Mayo’s, complete with bounce house, and a return to the Casey’s home for the Father’s Day Picnic and a Costume Car Concours. More later. Lisa Steele was excited to report that membership continues to rise. We now have 2074 total
members. The net increase this month was +22. The membership committee makes an effort every month to call new members to invite them to the Happy Hours as a jumping off point. Wendy Shoffit had nothing to report, but was busily scribbling notes as a substitute for absent Madhu Rao. James Shoffit reported that he went to Houston for the Lone Star Region’s 50th Anniversary dinner featuring guest Vic Elford. Most regions only have one main anniversary celebratory event, but is impressed that Mavericks are going all out for the year. Travis Howard was preparing for a Saturday Autocross to make up for the event that was rained out. Entrant numbers were low, but he was planning to promote it to get more attendees. While he hasn’t gotten AX/TT dates yet on the calendar for 2012, he was working with the University of Dallas to rent out the parking lots they own at the old Texas Stadium. He continues to look for local venues. Luke Edson suggested a place in Plano he noticed being used once for a car event.
