Some teachers also worked with Code in the Schools to teach video game and app<br />

development in their classrooms. For example, Liberty Elementary School Principal<br />

Joseph Manko partnered with Code in the Schools to develop a PK–5 computational<br />

skills curriculum, conduct professional development for teachers, and provide direct<br />

instruction both during the school day in the library’s maker space and in the afterschool<br />

program.<br />

Ensure Long-Term Sustainability<br />

Technology investments are not onetime expenses. Although onetime grants and other supplemental<br />

funding sources can serve as catalysts for establishing technology in learning efforts,<br />

they are not sustainable as schools and districts build toward a long-term vision and plan.<br />

When devices reach the end of life and infrastructure equipment becomes obsolete, districts<br />

and schools should have a reliable means to replace or upgrade them. Leaders should consider<br />

technology an ongoing, line-item expense from the very beginning of planning technology<br />

implementation.<br />
