THE 111 ART SHOW AND ART OF THANKSGIVING
The 111 Art Show opened on November 7 and
will run to December 11. This show features 30
emerging and established artists exhibiting a
wide variety of art. The show is presented in collaboration
with Desert Aids Project and Desert
Patio. Desert Patio is contributing a portion of
their showroom toward the exhibit for the artist’s
work. We will feature some of the artists in the
future issues of the Desert Daily Guide.
Valerio Lovino who represents DAP as an organizer
and promoter, is responsible for assisting in
establishing this show and the collaboration with
Desert Patio. The first artist we feature is Robert
E. Reeves. Robert creates wood sculptures and
functional art pieces from furniture to hats. He
migrated here from San Francisco in 1990 where
he had been a city planner. He had always been
involved in art although his college degree is in
architecture he continued to pursue his interest
in art. He creates his art from wood. First he
designs the sculpture project that he is planning,
keeping in mind the thickest part that will need
more layers of the sheet wood that is used in the
sculpture. The sheets are laminated to be ready
to carve the sculpture or functional piece. The
final result is an attractive creation. The largest
piece he is exhibiting is a male running torso, a
bit larger than life size, as shown in the photo. He
also creates wood
hats, in a variety
of styles, featured
in his display. He

This is Thanksgiving week, visual and performing
artists have contributed to enhancing our lives to
reflect on where we are in history through 2 and
3 dimensional visual art, music and performing
arts.
We have just completed an historic election.
Donald Trump one of the most controversial
individuals ever elected, has been narrowly selected
by the electoral college, to by the President
elect. When his selected vice presidential choice,
Mike Pence, was attending the Broadway hit show
“Hamilton” last Friday evening, he was provided
with a curtain call speech by actor Brandon Dixon
who plays Aaron Burrr. He said: “We,sir, are
the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious
that your new administration will not protect us,
our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us
and uphold our inalienable rights,”. He went on to
say, “We truly hope this show has inspired you to
uphold our American values and work on behalf
of all of us.”
As our LGBT community celebrates Thanksgiving
we need to be mindful that we have a new
administration that does not respect the diversity
of our lives and of many others who are not of the
category that they find “acceptable”. Our thanks
should go out to artists of all genres who use
their talents to remind the Trump administration
that the United States is INCLUSIVE. HAPPY
