PROGRAMS AND RESEARCH FACILITIES: The B.S. degree is<br />

offered with majors in Geographic Science and Community Planning,<br />

and parks and recreation management. The Geographic Sciences and<br />

Community Planning major integrates geographic knowledge and GIS<br />

mapping technologies with the problem-solving fields of community<br />

planning and urban design. Known as Geodesign, this educational<br />

framework will prepare you to create more livable and sustainable<br />

communities while contributing to a better world. The Parks and<br />

Recreation Management program offers emphases in community and<br />

commercial recreation, outdoor education and leadership, Park<br />

Protection, Tourism, and Individualized Studies. The Parks and<br />

Recreation Management degree program is also available over the<br />

Internet. The department also offers a specialist program, called the<br />

Park Ranger Training Program which is one of seven ranger training<br />

programs across the United States. This program offers a national park<br />

service approved basic law enforcement training for those seeking<br />

seasonal and permanent law-enforcement ranger jobs with the national<br />

the Park Protection emphasis area within the PRM degree program.<br />

The Department of Geography, Planning, and Recreation also offers a<br />

15 semester hour undergraduate certificate in parks and recreation<br />

management over the Internet, and an 18 semester hour graduate-level<br />

certificate in GIS and a 15 semester hour graduate-level certificate in<br />

Community Planning.<br />

We now offer a B.S. - M.S. Integrated Program in Applied<br />

Geospatial Sciences For NAU undergraduate Students Majoring<br />

in B.S. Geographic Sciences and Community Planning and B.S. Parks<br />

and Recreation Management. The Integrated B.S.- M.S. Program<br />

offers highly qualified and mature undergraduate students the<br />

opportunity for graduate study earlier than would normally be<br />

possible. The program is open to students who have demonstrated a<br />

mastery and commitment to the emphasis areas offered in the M.S. in<br />

Applied Geospatial Science.<br />

Benefits of the Integrated Program include: The Graduate Record<br />

Exam (GRE) is not required. We use coursework experience in the<br />

department to evaluate this aspect of the application. Students may<br />

transfer 6 units from the B.S. degree to the M.S. degree. Students must<br />

meet with an advisor prior to application to determine the 6 units that<br />

will be transferred. These units will continue to apply to the B.S.<br />

degree, which means the student will have 6 fewer units to complete<br />

the two degrees. Students can graduate in 5 years with both a B.S. and<br />

M.S. degree, if they plan their program of study appropriately.<br />

The MS Applied Geospatial Sciences degree plan is designed for<br />

students who want to pursue a career in understanding and managing<br />

land, community and environmental spatial systems, including<br />

geographic information systems (GIS), and remote sensing, and public<br />

planning and recreation. Both thesis and nonthesis plans are available.<br />

This nonthesis plan requires a professional applied paper that is<br />

overseen by your practicum committee.<br />

The Geospatial Technologies Emphasis (nonthesis) is a<br />

Professional Science Master's (PSM) degree. For more<br />

Professional Science Master's Association.<br />

NAU is ideally situated for field studies and research in geography,<br />

planning and recreation. The Grand Canyon and five other national<br />

parks and the largest American Indian reservation in the U.S. are all<br />

within a day's drive of the campus. Department research facilities<br />

include two well equipped GIS/ remote sensing labs and a Geodesign<br />

studio classroom. Our faculty members have a long-standing<br />

commitment to provide personalized attention to the needs of the<br />

individual student through close student-faculty interaction in a<br />

friendly, intellectually stimulating campus atmosphere.<br />

FINANCIAL AID: Semester system.<br />

GRADUATE: For the M.S. and GIS Certificate and Community<br />

Planning graduate certificate programs, a 3.0 GPA and undergraduate<br />

geography degree are preferred, but other majors can be accepted with<br />

course deficiencies. Teaching and research assistantships are<br />

available. Application forms must be submitted to both the NAU<br />

Graduate College and to the department. For additional information<br />

contact the Geography or GIS Program Coordinators (below) at the<br />

department address, or visit the department website. Applications<br />

received in full by August 1st (for Fall semester admissions) and<br />

January 1st (for Spring semester admissions) will receive priority<br />

consideration for graduate assistantships.<br />
