PROGRAMS AND RESEARCH FACILITIES: The 45-unit B.A.<br />

Program provides breadth in a 21-unit core, including emphasis on<br />

writing, research, and map measurement and GIS skills. The other 24<br />

units are chosen from two options: Human Geography and Planning;<br />

and Physical and Environmental Geography. The department also<br />

offers two 21-unit certificates in Geospatial Technology and Resource<br />

Management & Land Use Planning. Geography and Planning also<br />

houses a minor in Environmental Studies and Geospatial Literacy.<br />

Geography and Planning in collaboration with two other academic<br />

departments house two formal double majors: Geography and<br />

Economics; and Geography and History.<br />

The 30-unit Master of Arts in Environmental Policy and Planning is<br />

intended to broaden the training of, and to prepare, qualified students<br />

for: (1) employment in public service and the private sector where an<br />

advanced degree is desirable, (2) community college teaching in<br />

geography and social science, and (3) advanced academic work<br />

preparatory to the doctorate at other institutions. In particular, it<br />

stresses practical field experience and training in land use,<br />

environmental planning and development in urban and rural areas.<br />

Field studies in the region and internships with local government and<br />

private agencies are important elements of the program. The mountain<br />

and valley counties and towns of the University’s Northern California<br />

service region are an excellent laboratory for both the Master of Arts<br />

and the undergraduate options in planning.<br />

The department offers comprehensive facilities and equipment for<br />

undergraduate and graduate study. These include an extensive<br />

collection of maps, imagery, and technical field equipment; a physical<br />

geography laboratory; a multi-purpose 30 seat GIS, cartography,<br />

remote sensing and statistical analysis computer laboratory; a multimedia<br />

outfitted group project geography lounge; multi-media graduate<br />

seminar room; access to University ecological preserves; and an<br />

outdoor classroom for restoration ecology in the Butte Creek preserve.<br />

ACADEMIC PLAN, ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS, AND<br />

FINANCIAL AID: The University academic calendar consists of fall<br />

and spring semesters and summer session. Applicants wishing to<br />

pursue a master’s degree must have an acceptable baccalaureate<br />

degree with an undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 in the<br />

last sixty semester units and a grade point average of at least 3.0 in all<br />

post-baccalaureate graduate level coursework taken. Also required for<br />

admission are two letters of recommendation, writing samples, and<br />

Statement of Purpose.<br />

A range of seven scholarships are available to undergraduate and<br />

graduate students based on gpa, merit and need. Student interns are<br />

often hired for CSU Chico Research Foundation contract projects at<br />

the Geographical Information Center and Center for Economic<br />

Development on a competitive basis. Internships are also available<br />

from surrounding cities, county, state, and federal agencies, and in<br />

private business as well as non-profit organizations. Teaching<br />

assistantships are available for Graduate students on a competitive<br />
