border in Chin region. These women are known for their facial tattoos. Tattoos<br />

were applied to thirteen year old girls to ensure they were not taken against<br />

their will. This tradition was outlawed many years ago and will die within a<br />

generation.<br />

(above) Paduand woman at Lake Inle. Copper rings were applied to push down<br />

the shoulder plates and make neck appear longer. This practice comes with health<br />

concerns, and is now outlawed. Younger generations do wear neck rings but with<br />

no shoulder plate pressure, so their natural posture is not affected.<br />
