<strong>the</strong> sense of pa<strong>in</strong>. That's what happens when one<br />
contracts leprosy. The nerves are deadened or<br />
destroyed so that <strong>the</strong> patient feels no pa<strong>in</strong>, even if<br />
pricked with a p<strong>in</strong> or seared with a hot iron. Lepers<br />
have <strong>the</strong>ir f<strong>in</strong>gers chewed off by rats while <strong>the</strong>y<br />
sleep at night or lose <strong>the</strong>m easily <strong>in</strong> accidents. Our<br />
sense of pa<strong>in</strong> is a tremendous asset. If <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />
Spirit did not do His work of pa<strong>in</strong>fully convict<strong>in</strong>g<br />
us of s<strong>in</strong>, we would be <strong>in</strong>sensible to our own selfdestruction,<br />
for s<strong>in</strong> always destroys.<br />
How does He convict us of s<strong>in</strong>? Jesus expla<strong>in</strong>s<br />
how it happens: "He will reprove [convict] <strong>the</strong><br />
world of s<strong>in</strong>, … because <strong>the</strong>y believe not on me."<br />
John 16:8, 9. The real problem with s<strong>in</strong> is not <strong>the</strong><br />
do<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> bad th<strong>in</strong>gs, but <strong>the</strong> root that produces<br />
it. Not believ<strong>in</strong>g is that root s<strong>in</strong> of "unbelief."<br />
(Remember, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> New Testament, to have faith<br />
and to believe is <strong>the</strong> same word.) One of <strong>the</strong><br />
clearest def<strong>in</strong>itions of s<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bible is this:<br />
"Whatsoever is not of faith is s<strong>in</strong>." Romans 14:23.<br />
No one has ever fallen <strong>in</strong>to s<strong>in</strong> except when <strong>the</strong><br />
real reason was unbelief. And if a person believes<br />
