In <strong>the</strong> time of <strong>the</strong> apostles, be sure that<br />
sensuality, materialism, <strong>the</strong> love of money and<br />
luxury, liv<strong>in</strong>g for one's own self were as powerful<br />
temptations as <strong>the</strong>y are today! Our pitiful struggles<br />
to overcome <strong>the</strong>se temptations <strong>the</strong>y would have<br />
considered nonsense. What <strong>the</strong>y did know was that<br />
faith worked, like a bomb explod<strong>in</strong>g. We th<strong>in</strong>k it so<br />
hard to follow Christ, to sacrifice for Him; <strong>the</strong>y<br />
would have pitied our lack of understand<strong>in</strong>g. What<br />
<strong>the</strong>y had was New Testament justification by faith,<br />
which turned <strong>the</strong> world upside down and crucified<br />
<strong>the</strong> world unto <strong>the</strong>m. See Galatians 6:14.<br />
Can you guess why Satan would want to<br />
elim<strong>in</strong>ate that constra<strong>in</strong>t of love? This was beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />
his efforts <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early Christian era to distort and<br />
confuse this idea of agape until Christ had to<br />
sorrowfully say to <strong>the</strong> church of Ephesus (<strong>the</strong> early<br />
church), "Thou hast left thy first love [agape]."<br />
Revelation 2:4. Many of <strong>the</strong> church fa<strong>the</strong>rs lost its<br />
mean<strong>in</strong>g, so much so that Plot<strong>in</strong>us <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> third<br />
century rejected <strong>the</strong> idea that God is agape and<br />
