Under-18s Under-18s must must be be accompanied accompanied by by adult} adult} bishopton, langbank & bridge of weir Gordon Lethorn It is with a heavy heart that we announce the sad loss of local fundraising stalwart Gordon Lethorn. Born and bred in Bridge of Weir, Gordon, who would have been 63 in September, had been an active member of the community for many years. He was passionate about these causes and immersed himself in charity work and local community projects. As a part of the local tenants and residents association (TARA) in Bridge of Weir for more than 20 years, Gordon had been the chair for more than 10 years and under his stewardship it has developed into a vibrant, challenging and supportive organisation, which does a great deal for tenants and residents. His other great legacy is the Festival Committee. He and his wife Brenda and the team of volunteers organise the event each year, including the selection of the Gala Queen and her assistants. The annual parade out to the park for Gala Day is always an extravaganza, with pipe bands and bunting to direct the large crowds who join in the parade. The Festival Committee also organises the fabulous Santa Sleigh each year. How many of our children have excitedly waited to hear the sound of Santa’s music winding its way around the village towards their home? So many local groups and charities have benefitted from this regular fundraising event, with the volunteers going out in all sorts of weather conditions during the weeks leading up to Christmas. Gordon was also involved in the Tenants Scrutiny Panel, Bridge of Weir Community Council and Renfrewshire Licensing Forum, as well as being an active member of his local church. To recognise the time and effort put into his activities for the community, Gordon was recently awarded a Provost’s Distinction Certificate by Renfrewshire Provost Anne Hall and he is pictured here collecting his award. bishopton, langbank & bridge of weir The Bridge in June Father’s Day: Have you remembered FATHER’S DAY which is celebrated on Sunday 19th June? Artists: We are pleased to welcome local artist, Rab Wilson, who will be exhibiting his paintings from Monday 6th June until Saturday 9th July. For all your purchases of stationery, greeting cards, pocket money toys and hand crafted items please support The Bridge where our volunteers work hard to meet your needs. Post Office: with the imminent closure of our local branch of The Clydesdale Bank, the Post Office can meet a number of your financial needs. A Clydesdale Bank card enables you to deposit and withdraw cash from your bank account. With the holiday season approaching - travel insurance, ordering of foreign currency and the safe, easy to use Travel Money Card can all be arranged through the Post Office. Film Club: The new programme for fortnightly showings is available. Please ask our volunteers for a copy. Garden: The Allotments and Garden Society have been busy tending to the garden. Please view their gardening skills at the back of The Bridge. As always, we thank you for your support - The Bridge is your Post Office, Shop and Community Centre in the centre of the village. (Opening Hours: Mon – 9am to 5pm (PO closed 12 noon to 12.30pm); Tues & Fri – 1pm to 5pm; Wed & Thu – 10am to 2pm; Sat – 9am to 1pm) At the funeral service a collection was made for Accord Hospice. Just under £500 was raised and a businessperson from Bridge of Weir kindly matched the donations to make a total of £1000 for the hospice. The community and members of the committees he served on pass on their deep condolences to Gordon’s wife Brenda, his family and many friends and all who were touched by his involvement and efforts for betterment of Bridge of Weir. He will be much missed by so many. To celebrate his legacy, the Gala Day parade will go ahead with a Carnival theme and this year, for the first time, a float will be leading the parade, decorated by Alice (formerly Gibb Stuart’s). bishopton, langbank & bridge of weir Bishopton Day This year will be on Saturday 18 June, with the parade led by St Columba’s pipe band leaving Bishopton Primary School at 12 noon. Also in the parade will be SambaYaBamba who are a percussion group that play Brazilian samba music. Both will also perform in the main arena. Attractions on the day include dancing displays, football and rugby displays, live music, magician, vintage fire engine, model railway, pony rides, inflatables and charity stalls. Entry is £2 per adult and kids go free. More information on the website or Facebook page.

We got some of the best weather so far this year for our annual clean up weekend over 14th and 15th May. Other than our own group members, we had fewer supporters than we’ve had in the past. However, those gallant few who did come out to help us put their backs into it and we achieved what we set out to do, s o that cheered us up. As did the water, soft drinks and snacks freely provided by the local Co-op Foodstore to sustain us over the two days. Another positive is that there was a bit less rubbish lying about this year. Still around 60 industrial-size bags’ worth though, plus a wooden pallet, an old bike, an oil drum and a couple of chairs. All within yards of the village’s two main thoroughfares. You have to wonder about some folk. By the time this issue is out, we should have received our order of summer plants and begun placing them in the baskets and planters throughout the village. And we’ll be getting ready for Gala Day, where we’ll have two stalls in Houston Road Park, including our everpopular Strawberries and Cream stall. Hope to see you there - don’t forget that every penny we raise is spent on making Bridge of Weir brighter. bishopton, langbank & bridge of weir Dementia Friends Session at the Pirie On Monday 13th June the Pirie Information Centre at Freeland Church, Bridge of Weir, is hosting a Dementia Friends session led by Iain Houston of Alzheimer Scotland. This will start at 10.30am and lasts for about one hour. After this Iain will have an information stand and can answer individual queries. Dementia Friends is a social action movement which aims to raise awareness of dementia, reduce stigma, dispel some common misconceptions associated with dementia and help reduce isolation for those affected by dementia. There are currently 90,000 people in Scotland who have a diagnosis of dementia, 2,750 of which live in Renfrewshire. Alzheimer Scotland believes that nobody should face dementia alone, you can help by signing up as a Dementia Friend. People with dementia get by with a little help from their friends, and anybody can become a Scottish Dementia Friend. It’s just about understanding a bit more about dementia and the small things you can do to help people with the condition. This could be helping someone find the right bus or being patient in a till queue if someone with dementia is taking longer to pay. Every action counts. Many communities are working towards becoming dementia friendly and we welcome the opportunity to offer the chance for the Gryffe valley community to learn more about supporting our neighbours who are affected by dementia. Please come along to find out how you can help. We also hope that people wishing to know more about services for relatives and friends with dementia will attend. Needless to say, I am very pleased with the result of the recent Scottish Parliament election. If you were unable to vote in this election because your name did not appear on the voters’ role, then I am sorry but you must register to vote by 7 June if you want to vote in the forthcoming EU referendum on 23 June. Voters require to make an application to the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO), 16 Glasgow Road, Paisley or you can go online www. gov.uk/register-to-vote. Deadline for receiving new postal vote and postal proxy applications and changes to existing postal or proxy votes is 5pm on 8/6/16, and the deadline for new applications to vote by proxy (not postal proxy) is 5pm on 15/6/16. It will be another year till the council election in which I will be standing again, although at this point in time, the ward boundary is still to be confirmed. If you go to the trouble of bagging your dog’s poo, take the trouble to put it in a bin please! Some animals think the bags are a tasty snack because of the cereal content of dog’s poo and can ingest the bag which blocks up their intestines leading to a very painful death, so do not leave them lying around or toss them into the fields. Council has announced its Roads Improvement Programme for this year. Unfortunately, there are no plans for resurfacing of any footways in Ward 10 despite the large number of rough pavements. We will meet in Freeland church halls at 4pm for songs and a talk. We will then take a picnic and walk up to The Glen whatever the weather. If it is raining, bring your wellies and waterproofs.
