Kilmacolm and Port Glasgow Agricultural Society Show
It was another highly successful year for the Show; the weather was fantastic and
support for the show was outstanding, with visitor numbers the highest they have
been for years.
The Dairy Section was won by James Telfer.
The Cattle Section had a huge number of Highland
Cattle entries - this section grows every year and is of a
very high standard. Competitors came from all across
the west coast. The Beef Champion was T & S Gatherer,
and Glasgow City Council won both the Highland
Championship and the Supreme Championship.
The Sheep Section was strongly contested again this
year, with Ewan
Robertson taking
the Overall Sheep
Championship and
T & E Paterson
taking the
Champion Reserve.
The Clydesdale Horses were very popular with
visitors - these huge, powerful horses always
draw a good crowd. A&E Campbell stole the show
with the most points and William Drummond
won the Best Clydesdale in the field.
The Young Farmers’ Class was won by Beth
Harvey. The new Children’s Classes were
extremely popular:
Best Young Handler -
Kayleigh Devine
Best Dairy Calf - Anne Wright
Best Beef Calf - Euan Laird
Beef Calf under 2000kgs out of a
dairy cow - Kayleigh Devine
A big thank you to the 13 Vintage
Tractor exhibitors who patiently
waited all afternoon to display
their tractors in the main ring.
The Champion Vintage Tractor
was exhibited by George Davidson and Reserve was
from Jim Orr, both from Kilmacolm.
The Industrial Section was of a very high standard,
as always. There was an increase in entries for
children’s classes with great support from local
schools and nursery schools. This year, Port Glasgow High School entered
with great success. For the first time, there were entries from Primary 4 Rashielea
Primary School, Erskine. Howwood won the SWRI Foursomes and the Children’s
Champions were Scott Downie and Flora Connell. Adult class winners were: Shona
Telfer, Elizabeth Martin, M.Mitchell, Anne Baxter, Lilian McWilliam, and Laura
Telfer.
The Light Horse Section was extremely busy with a record turnout, in particular
for the Cross Country and the Show Jumping Classes. Competitors old and new
came from across the Central Belt, Ayrshire, Argyll and the Highlands to take part
in a variety of classes. The Showjumping Classes were extremely popular with the
spectators. Our showing classes were of a very high standard, giving our judges
some very difficult decisions to make. The Light Horse Team worked tirelessly to
keep classes running smoothly and competitors happy.
The Children’s Pet Show had a
great selection of wee pets and very
enthusiastic owners who were all
delighted with their rosettes and prizes
of sweeties!
The comedy assault course, Country
Capers, proved a hit with competitors and
visitors.
The talented Pipe Band from St Columba’s
School and the May Hughes School of
Dance entertained spectators in the Main
Ring while the Vintage Tractors and Cow Milking were popular with many of our
younger visitors! KG Hawks held a demonstration in the main ring which involved
some of the audience! The ever popular Drystane Dykers were at the Show again
this year, exhibiting the skill and hard work needed to build the perfect wall!
The show had great support again this year from a huge
team of volunteers, committee members, sponsors,
advertisers, judges, stewards, trade stand holders
and visitors (human and hairy) who donate their
time, effort and money to make the show a
success. A huge thanks must be given to the
extremely generous sponsors and supporters
of this year’s show; we had a record amount of
sponsorship for which we are very grateful.
A huge thanks also to the record number of
competitors at the Show this year who came
from far and wide to join us in the sun. It was a
fantastic Show and there were hoards of happy
and sunburned faces by the end of Showday!
