A community group’s efforts have helped to clean up the historic village of Kilbarchan. “The Big Kilbarchan Smile Spring Clean” brought together around 100 volunteers across a weekend with almost 200 sacks of rubbish collected! Damon Scott, Joint Chair, said: “The enthusiasm and commitment from so many people prepared to give up their time has been overwhelming. It was a fantastic effort and it is great to know that there are so many people who share our vision to make Kilbarchan an even better place to live, work and visit. We had whole families joining in over the weekend so hopefully the kids that took part will learn the importance of not dropping litter in the first place.” Joint Chair, Gail Scoular added: “Kilbarchan Smile would like to thank everyone who took part in The Big Kilbarchan Smile Spring Clean. Over the 2 day event around 100 people attended with almost 200 sacks of litter collected. A special thanks to Kilbarchan Scouts for their efforts and for laying on a BBQ on the Saturday and to the Glenleven Inn for providing refreshments on the Sunday.” Alliums, cornflowers, foxgloves, globe thistles, geums, lavenders and flowering herbs all plants that sustain the growing colonies of honey bees at this time of year. Also sycamore and horse chestnut trees will have been providing pollinators valuable nectar sources. To do your part in supporting wildlife, leave areas of you garden to allow the growth of wildflowers, maybe an area of lawn free from mowing, so clover, daisies and dandelions can grow and feed honeybees and other pollinating insects. In June beekeepers continue to monitor the hives for signs from the bees that may be looking to swarm and take appropriate action to manage / prevent this. The colonies are growing substantially and honey production begins, weather and nectar sources permitting. Apiary Visit The associations 1st Apiary Visit took place Sunday 8th May, which turned out to be a beautiful day. This was an opportunity for all Beekeepers, experienced and novice alike to go through some hive management techniques with one of Scotland’s most experienced beekeepers, Ian Craig. There was a fantastic turnout of 28, over half of the clubs members, which may have also had something to do with the catering provided (thanks to Judith, Margaret and Jacqui). The group consisted of adults of all ages and children, experienced and people new to beekeeping, hoping to gain knowledge and the possibility of having their own bees during the season. Greener Renfrewshire Do Your Bit provided equipment including litter pickers, hi viz vests, bags, bag hoops and gloves. Grow Wild The Kilbarchan & District Beekeepers have joined in the Kew Royal Botanic Gardens in the UK’s biggest wild flower campaign. Six beekeepers have volunteered to sow 10m 2 of Scottish sourced wildflowers, great for pollinators. Some even got together as a group to do this, just like Donal, Graham and Calum pictured below, who sowed their seeds in April. Glasgow Botanical Gardens also joined in the campaign by reserving an area of their new Scottish Beekeepers Association Pollinators Garden with one of the seed packs (being delivered below). Clyde Muirshiel and Ride 63 have again teamed up this time to offer an off road, mountain biking event at Muirshiel Country Park on Saturday 11th June. It’s open to everyone aged 8 - adult and has age bandings/ categories and FREE bike hire provided by event partners RT Cycles. Online entry is priced at just £5, or £10 on the day. Windows on Wildlife The Clyde Muirshiel Wildlife Project aims to bring people closer to wildlife, gaining a unique insight to the furry & feathered inhabitants of Castle Semple Country Park. Countryside Ranger Hayley Douglas gives us an update. Wildlife News What a fantastic spell of weather we are experiencing at the moment. The lighter evenings and warmer weather has meant that wildlife sightings have been more frequent and I have some great news. We have not one, not two, but THREE badger cubs in the sett this year. To see them check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoLYghBq8Xo&feature=youtu.be The cubs put in an appearance on the 11th of April and look to be very healthy and typically feisty. I’ve still to think of names for them and will let you know in due course. Having the trail cameras in place really does allow you to see the intimacies of the animals private life and again Rough, the two year old male badger, has been taken a great interest in his siblings. I’m looking forward to seeing how their relationships develop and will continue to update you with footage. I was also lucky to meet Daisy the badger cub at Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue when we popped up to do some filming for STV Glasgow. Daisy, who is of similar age to our three cubs, was found abandoned outside her sett. It is not known what happened to her mother but it is more than likely she was an RTA. The centre is hoping to get another cub to keep her company before releasing her back into the wild later in the year. The mist nets have been out at Muirshiel Country Park and I have had regular catches of siskins including two fledglings in recent days. What surprised me is that for the first time I retrapped (the technical ringer’s term is ‘controlled’) a bird that has been ringed out with the Clyde area. The bird was a male siskin and I’m waiting to hear where he was initially ringed. It is not uncommon for siskins to turn up that were ringed in Highland or Grampian Region but some appear from down South. Events June sees the return of Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue’s Open Day on the 12th of June between 12am – 4pm. This is the only day of the year that the centre is open to the public and I will be in attendance doing a bird ringing demonstration. Hope to see you there.
