looking (actually, too-matte accentuates the lumpiness of
breakouts), and it’s a great make-up base if someone doesn’t
feel this is enough coverage. You flip open the lid to reveal a
green-tinted balm which calms the redness of a blemish while
delivering its antibacterial cargo of ingredients. For more coverage
for acne-prone skins, one of the best is Clinique Anti-Blemish
Solutions Liquid Makeup, £25 for 10ml, along with Tarte Water
Foundation, £30 for 30ml (tartecosmetics.com), and (affordably)
Rimmel London Stay Matte Foundation, £5.99 for 30ml.
Follow lifestyle advice, too. For wellbeing wisdom, I generally
turn to pharmacist Shabir Daya of the authoritative beauty
and health website victoriahealth.com. As Shabir notes: “The
look of your skin is a direct reflection of your overall health.
Taking simple but essential measures will reap rewards not just
in the look of your skin, but also in your overall confidence.”
He says it is worth noting the following. (Much of which is
probably what any mother would tell her teen – but it may
be more authoritative coming from outside the family!)
Grains and sugars. Elimination, whilst difficult,
even for a few weeks will most likely result in a
major improvement in the look of your skin.
Water. Drink plenty of water. Hydrating your body
will help with the elimination of waste, improve
skin tone and facilitate regeneration of cells.
Sleep. A good night’s sleep will help to reduce stress levels and
lead to a clearer skin. Your body’s healing processes on the
whole take place at night and that includes your skin. (It’s good
advice to try to get a teenager to ban mobile devices from the
bedroom, since these are now known to keep us awake.)
Exercise. Exercise encourages circulation and helps support
the greater excretion of toxins through the pores.
Balance of bacteria. This is especially important if you
have been using antibiotics for skin problems since
these destroy the beneficial bacteria within the gut that
are involved in the breakdown of foods, removal of
toxins within the gut as well as enhancing the digestive
process. There are many probiotic supplements on the
market so ensure that you use a high quality one.
To which I can only add: remember, there’s
more to life than ‘selfies’. Listen to music. Spend
time with friends. Get out in the fresh air. And
the skin challenges which seem so overwhelming
when staring at the screen of an iPhone (or in the
mirror) may not seem so all-important, after all.
