I would go to Monet’s garden
in Giverny, but I’d have to go
back in time too – to the day I
visited when I was just 18. The
shutters on the house were so
vividly green, the bridge over
the pond reflected on the water, the Irises and
Waterlilies were flowering, and there were very few
visitors. I’ve not gone back since, in case it changes
my memory of that perfect morning.

I would love to visit Arne
Maynard’s garden, Allt-y-bela, in
Monmouthshire. It’s got it all really:
a romantic Welsh tower house at
its heart, surrounded by quirky
topiary, roses, fruit, vegetables and
wildflowers, all of which are linked
to the Elizabethan house and the
surrounding landscape. Arne started
with a relatively blank canvas, so
this garden really shows off his
talent, and what can be done if you
have a clear vision. Magical!

I would love to visit Sacro Bosco in Italy, because its creator
intentionally un-nerves the visitor with shocking edifices
and thought-provoking references. ‘The Park of Monsters of
Bomarzo’ is not meant to be comfortable or even beautiful – borne
out of its owner’s grief for his dead wife, its sculptures speak of
passion through the ages. A reminder of the power of landscape.
