Black Pride sets date for annual<br />

celebration<br />

“Changing Hearts & Minds,”<br />

N<strong>as</strong>hville’s fourth Annual Black<br />

Pride Celebration, will take place<br />

Oc<strong>to</strong><strong>be</strong>r 27-29.<br />

T<strong>he</strong> event is hosted by Brot<strong>he</strong>rs United<br />

Network, Inc, t<strong>he</strong> state’s only gay black<br />

501c3 non-profit organization. N<strong>as</strong>hville<br />

Black Pride (NBP) is one of more than 26<br />

mem<strong>be</strong>r cities within t<strong>he</strong> International<br />

Federation of Black Pride (IFBP) organization,<br />

which attracts thousands of black<br />

Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender<br />

(LGBT) attendees throughout t<strong>he</strong> nation,<br />

<strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> from Toron<strong>to</strong> and South Africa.<br />

N<strong>as</strong>hville’s mission is <strong>to</strong> bring <strong>to</strong>get<strong>he</strong>r<br />

African American and ot<strong>he</strong>r Gay/Same<br />

Gender Loving (SGL) People of Color in<br />

a social, non-threatening setting <strong>to</strong> uplift,<br />

educate and present positive images that<br />

<strong>he</strong>lp empower, affirm and maintain a<br />

<strong>he</strong>althy, productive community.<br />

Although t<strong>he</strong> target population is predominately<br />

African American, t<strong>he</strong> weekend’s<br />

celebration is open <strong>to</strong> all people<br />

regardless of race, sexual orientation or<br />

gender identity. NBP publis<strong>he</strong>s a free<br />

Black Pride Guide a month <strong>be</strong>fore t<strong>he</strong><br />

weekend, <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> lists all of t<strong>he</strong> events<br />

in t<strong>he</strong> Oct/Nov/Dec issue of T<strong>he</strong><br />

Brot<strong>he</strong>rs United Newsletter entitled T<strong>he</strong><br />

identified Andrew and BEAR’s surname is<br />

Rodgers w<strong>he</strong>n it should have <strong>be</strong>en Rogers.<br />

T<strong>he</strong> figure given for female <strong>to</strong> male surgical<br />

costs w<strong>as</strong> inaccurate. T<strong>he</strong> actual figure<br />

should have <strong>be</strong>en $100,000 <strong>to</strong> $150.000.<br />

T<strong>he</strong> inclusion of t<strong>he</strong> num<strong>be</strong>r of transsexual<br />

people at 100,000 may <strong>be</strong> incorrect, however,<br />

t<strong>he</strong> actual num<strong>be</strong>r cannot <strong>be</strong> verified.<br />

In t<strong>he</strong> “Call <strong>to</strong> Duty Tour” article that<br />

Mayor, t<strong>he</strong> President of t<strong>he</strong> IFBP and a<br />

host of ads from sponsors, along with<br />

many local and national organizations<br />

and businesses.<br />

“T<strong>he</strong> guide is read by hundreds of<br />

pride-goers, who <strong>he</strong>lp <strong>to</strong> bring thousands<br />

of dollars in<strong>to</strong> our city over t<strong>he</strong> course of<br />

t<strong>he</strong> weekend,” said Dewayne Jenkins,<br />

organizer of t<strong>he</strong> event.<br />

signings, a spoken word event, live music<br />

and entertainment, a <strong>to</strong>wn hall meeting<br />

at N<strong>as</strong>hville CARES, a <strong>be</strong>nefit party at<br />

t<strong>he</strong> Gibson Showc<strong>as</strong>e at Opry Mills Mall<br />

entitled “Blood of King & Queens; A<br />

Night of Royalty,” workshops, couples<br />

recognition, free, confidential HIV testing<br />

and annual Black GLBT Film Fest at<br />

t<strong>he</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ric Belcourt T<strong>he</strong>ater. For more<br />

Corrections — setting t<strong>he</strong> record straight<br />

ran on page 56 of t<strong>he</strong> March 2006 issue,<br />

“O&AN” reported that Tim Smith w<strong>as</strong> a<br />

logistics and embarkation specialist who<br />

joined t<strong>he</strong> military after one year of college.<br />

His partner w<strong>as</strong> ordered <strong>to</strong> stay on<br />

b<strong>as</strong>e. His commanding officer, not his<br />

NCO, forced him out, adding that <strong>he</strong><br />

would <strong>be</strong> “near impossible <strong>to</strong> replace.” �<br />

“O&AN” is happy <strong>to</strong> make<br />

t<strong>he</strong>se corrections.
