Black Pride sets date for annual
celebration

“Changing Hearts & Minds,”
Nashville’s fourth Annual Black
Pride Celebration, will take place
October 27-29.
The event is hosted by Brothers United
Network, Inc, the state’s only gay black
501c3 non-profit organization. Nashville
Black Pride (NBP) is one of more than 26
member cities within the International
Federation of Black Pride (IFBP) organization,
which attracts thousands of black
Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender
(LGBT) attendees throughout the nation,
as well as from Toronto and South Africa.
Nashville’s mission is to bring together
African American and other Gay/Same
Gender Loving (SGL) People of Color in
a social, non-threatening setting to uplift,
educate and present positive images that
help empower, affirm and maintain a
healthy, productive community.
Although the target population is predominately
African American, the weekend’s
celebration is open to all people
regardless of race, sexual orientation or
gender identity. NBP publishes a free
Black Pride Guide a month before the
weekend, as well as lists all of the events
in the Oct/Nov/Dec issue of The
Brothers United Newsletter entitled The
BU SOURCE 2006. In years past, it has
included letters from the Nashville
In the Knox Boyz article that ran on
page 21 of the March 2006 issue, “O&AN”
identified Andrew and BEAR’s surname is
Rodgers when it should have been Rogers.
The figure given for female to male surgical
costs was inaccurate. The actual figure
should have been $100,000 to $150.000.
The inclusion of the number of transsexual
people at 100,000 may be incorrect, however,
the actual number cannot be verified.
In the “Call to Duty Tour” article that
Mayor, the President of the IFBP and a
host of ads from sponsors, along with
many local and national organizations
and businesses.
“The guide is read by hundreds of
pride-goers, who help to bring thousands
of dollars into our city over the course of
the weekend,” said Dewayne Jenkins,
organizer of the event.
Activities will include a reception, book
signings, a spoken word event, live music
and entertainment, a town hall meeting
at Nashville CARES, a benefit party at
the Gibson Showcase at Opry Mills Mall
entitled “Blood of King & Queens; A
Night of Royalty,” workshops, couples
recognition, free, confidential HIV testing
and annual Black GLBT Film Fest at
the historic Belcourt Theater. For more

Corrections — setting the record straight
ran on page 56 of the March 2006 issue,
“O&AN” reported that Tim Smith was a
logistics and embarkation specialist who
joined the military after one year of college.
His partner was ordered to stay on
base. His commanding officer, not his
NCO, forced him out, adding that he
would be “near impossible to replace.” �
“O&AN” is happy to make
these corrections.
