NEWS • OUT & ABOUT NEWSPAPER • APRIL, 2006 • 17 Ethan Interactive, Inc. celebrates 10th anniversary Staff Reports Ethan Interactive, Inc., t<strong>he</strong> parent company of t<strong>he</strong> <strong>Out</strong> in America Cities Network, turns 10 this year, having served t<strong>he</strong> online GLBT community since 1996. <strong>Out</strong> in America Cities Network is t<strong>he</strong> largest city-b<strong>as</strong>ed GLBT online network in t<strong>he</strong> United States aimed at informing, entertaining and uniting t<strong>he</strong> global GLBT community. T<strong>he</strong> 178 city sites range from <strong>Out</strong> in NYC <strong>to</strong> <strong>Out</strong> in San Diego with many cities in <strong>be</strong>tween <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> abroad: 13 city sites across Canada, eight in Mexico and one in t<strong>he</strong> United Kingdom. OIA <strong>to</strong>tals 7.6 million visi<strong>to</strong>rs monthly. “It’s <strong>be</strong>en a privilege that we have <strong>be</strong>en able <strong>to</strong> serve t<strong>he</strong> GLBT community for 10 years,” said John Herman, project manager for Ethan Interactive. Each city site offers local news content, resource information, event calendars and advertisers giving it a local feel; mem<strong>be</strong>rs have t<strong>he</strong> ability <strong>to</strong> chat with ot<strong>he</strong>r people in t<strong>he</strong>ir city. ”<strong>Out</strong> & <strong>About</strong> <strong>Newspaper</strong>” provides news content for <strong>Out</strong> In N<strong>as</strong>hville, <strong>Out</strong> In Knoxville and <strong>Out</strong> In Chattanooga. On t<strong>he</strong> national level, t<strong>he</strong> Web sites contain national news, feature content and ot<strong>he</strong>r information of interest <strong>to</strong> t<strong>he</strong> GLBT community. <strong>Out</strong> in America Cities Network first <strong>be</strong>gan in t<strong>he</strong> one-<strong>be</strong>droom b<strong>as</strong>ement of co-C.E.O. F. Jared Hunnell’s home in Decem<strong>be</strong>r 1996. Originally only one city site, <strong>Out</strong> in Columbus launc<strong>he</strong>d in May 1997. During t<strong>he</strong> first month, more than 800 mem<strong>be</strong>rs signed up <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong>come mem<strong>be</strong>rs in t<strong>he</strong> Columbus area. Because of this growth, offices moved <strong>to</strong> t<strong>he</strong> second floor of t<strong>he</strong> S<strong>to</strong>newall-Columbus building in t<strong>he</strong> Short North District. In Oc<strong>to</strong><strong>be</strong>r 1997 Ethan Interactive announced a merger with anot<strong>he</strong>r Ohio Web site, <strong>Out</strong> in Ohio, and launc<strong>he</strong>d two new Web sites, <strong>Out</strong> in Cleveland and <strong>Out</strong> in Cincinnati. In Decem<strong>be</strong>r 1997 Ethan Interactive surp<strong>as</strong>sed all its previous records w<strong>he</strong>n it rele<strong>as</strong>ed 22 new city sites and its <strong>to</strong>tal monthly hits crossed t<strong>he</strong> one-million mark. Ethan Interactive, Inc. rele<strong>as</strong>ed a second wave of 40 new city sites in 2000 and again in 2002 <strong>to</strong> boost t<strong>he</strong> network’s size <strong>to</strong> encomp<strong>as</strong>s more than 100 individual sites. Finally, OIA reac<strong>he</strong>d 400,000 mem<strong>be</strong>rs and <strong>be</strong>came t<strong>he</strong> largest city-b<strong>as</strong>ed GLBT Web portal in t<strong>he</strong> United States in 2003. Corporate <strong>he</strong>adquarters completed anot<strong>he</strong>r move from t<strong>he</strong> S<strong>to</strong>newall-Columbus building <strong>to</strong> t<strong>he</strong> Miranova Corporate Tower in down<strong>to</strong>wn Columbus, Ohio. Currently t<strong>he</strong> <strong>Out</strong> in America Cities Network bo<strong>as</strong>ts 750,000 mem<strong>be</strong>rs and 178 city sites which include every state capital. “We have <strong>be</strong>en able <strong>to</strong> reach so many cities and mem<strong>be</strong>rs across t<strong>he</strong> country and around t<strong>he</strong> world. It’s amazing!” said Jonathan Mabry, brand marketing manager. “We’ve come a long way and t<strong>he</strong> <strong>Out</strong> in America Cities Network is still growing.” T<strong>he</strong> <strong>Out</strong> in America Cities Network and its Columbusb<strong>as</strong>ed parent company Ethan Interactive, Inc. have <strong>be</strong>come t<strong>he</strong> most popular city-b<strong>as</strong>ed LGBT online destination. A monthly average of seven million households throughout North America and Europe visit at le<strong>as</strong>t one of t<strong>he</strong> 178 individual Web sites within t<strong>he</strong> <strong>Out</strong> in America Cities Network. In its l<strong>as</strong>t year of operation, t<strong>he</strong> <strong>Out</strong> in America Cities Network experienced a 400-percent incre<strong>as</strong>e in mem<strong>be</strong>rship. �
