Parishioners of Hillsboro Presbyterian<br />
Church have adopted a progressive outreach<br />
program for mem<strong>be</strong>rs of t<strong>he</strong> GLBT<br />
community, according <strong>to</strong> a recent press<br />
rele<strong>as</strong>e.<br />
T<strong>he</strong> extensive Covenant Companions<br />
program w<strong>as</strong> set up after t<strong>he</strong> recent success<br />
of a similarly t<strong>he</strong>med program at<br />
N<strong>as</strong>hville’s West End United Methodist<br />
Church.<br />
T<strong>he</strong> program, which started Feb. 28 and<br />
is <strong>he</strong>ld each Tuesday night, addresses t<strong>he</strong><br />
struggles of openly gay Christians and<br />
those mem<strong>be</strong>rs of t<strong>he</strong> GLBT community<br />
wishing <strong>to</strong> reconcile t<strong>he</strong>ir sexual orientation<br />
with t<strong>he</strong> Christian faith.<br />
“I often <strong>he</strong>ar t<strong>he</strong> s<strong>to</strong>ries of people who<br />
have <strong>be</strong>en through ex-gay ministries.<br />
Afterward t<strong>he</strong>y often try <strong>to</strong> sort out t<strong>he</strong>ir<br />
faith, and many, like jilted lovers, end up<br />
walking away from t<strong>he</strong> very relationship<br />
t<strong>he</strong>y wanted above all ot<strong>he</strong>rs, a relationship<br />
with God,” Hillsboro Presbyterian<br />
mem<strong>be</strong>r Greg Gardner said.<br />
“Without a doubt t<strong>he</strong> church h<strong>as</strong> misrepresented,<br />
and continues <strong>to</strong> misrepresent,<br />
t<strong>he</strong> Christian faith and t<strong>he</strong> message<br />
of love and inclusiveness that is consistently<br />
and unquestionably t<strong>he</strong> message of<br />
Jesus,” Gardener added.<br />
T<strong>he</strong> Rev. Michal Ann Pepper originally<br />
envisioned t<strong>he</strong> nine-week covenant group<br />
prices are $7 in advance and $9 at t<strong>he</strong><br />
door. Tickets can <strong>be</strong> purch<strong>as</strong>ed starting<br />
April 19 at t<strong>he</strong> One-In-Teen meetings.<br />
“We are able <strong>to</strong> offer t<strong>he</strong> community<br />
this wonderful event at this e<strong>as</strong>ily affordable<br />
price <strong>be</strong>cause of t<strong>he</strong> generosity of our<br />
fabulous prom sponsors,” said DeWayne<br />

Hillsboro Presbyterian ‘out’ <strong>to</strong> GLBT<br />
community with outreach program<br />
for <strong>he</strong>r congregation in California. Since<br />
t<strong>he</strong>n, t<strong>he</strong> program h<strong>as</strong> gradually <strong>be</strong>en<br />
implemented at churc<strong>he</strong>s throughout t<strong>he</strong><br />
country.<br />
T<strong>he</strong> b<strong>as</strong>is of t<strong>he</strong> program is inspired by<br />
Pepper’s nationally recognized guidebook,<br />
Reconciling Journey: A Devotional<br />
Workbook for Lesbian and Gay Christians.<br />
“T<strong>he</strong> most b<strong>as</strong>ic <strong>as</strong>sumption underlying<br />
this workbook is that Christian discipleship<br />
is t<strong>he</strong> foundation of our lives. Our<br />
sexual orientation is an important part of<br />
who we are,” Pepper wrote in t<strong>he</strong> book’s<br />
preface.<br />
Pepper’s book is divided in<strong>to</strong> supplements<br />
that correspond with t<strong>he</strong> covenant<br />
group’s lectionary. In t<strong>he</strong> first week,<br />
covenant mem<strong>be</strong>rs explored t<strong>he</strong>ir faith<br />
foundation and <strong>to</strong>ld s<strong>to</strong>ries of t<strong>he</strong>ir own<br />
struggles with t<strong>he</strong>ir sexual orientation and<br />
Christianity.<br />
Gardner said that in upcoming weeks,<br />
t<strong>he</strong> Rev. Nancy McCurley will conduct a<br />
group session on t<strong>he</strong> common Biblical<br />
p<strong>as</strong>sages that are used in denouncing<br />
homosexuality and will provide a his<strong>to</strong>rical<br />
reference point on how t<strong>he</strong>se verses are<br />
misapplied.<br />
