Lambda Book Group meets monthly <strong>to</strong> talk<br />

about gay literature<br />

by Curt Bucy<br />

Book Reviewer<br />

I am not sure if all my GLBT readers out<br />

t<strong>he</strong>re know it, but t<strong>he</strong>re is a gay book club<br />

in <strong>to</strong>wn!<br />

T<strong>he</strong> Lambda Book Group started in 1996<br />

at BookStar <strong>he</strong>re in N<strong>as</strong>hville, and after a<br />

hiatus for a few years, it h<strong>as</strong> started again in<br />

full force this January. T<strong>he</strong> force <strong>be</strong>hind<br />

t<strong>he</strong> Lambda Book Group is Davis-Kidd’s<br />

own Pat Patrick.<br />

Patrick, who is t<strong>he</strong> book reviewer for<br />

“Inside <strong>Out</strong> N<strong>as</strong>hville, wanted <strong>to</strong> start a<br />

forum for t<strong>he</strong> GLBT community <strong>to</strong> get<br />

<strong>to</strong>get<strong>he</strong>r <strong>to</strong> talk about t<strong>he</strong>ir genre in t<strong>he</strong><br />

book world.<br />

T<strong>he</strong> group meets once a month on t<strong>he</strong><br />

third Wednesday at 7 p.m. at N<strong>as</strong>hville’s<br />

Davis-Kidd books<strong>to</strong>re in its new location in<br />

Green Hills Mall.<br />

In a large, comfortable conference room<br />

inside Bronté, mem<strong>be</strong>rs of t<strong>he</strong> GLBT community<br />

get <strong>to</strong>get<strong>he</strong>r <strong>to</strong> discuss a book of<br />

t<strong>he</strong> group’s choosing.<br />

Patrick says it’s a challenge <strong>to</strong> pick books<br />

that are appealing <strong>to</strong> both gay men and les-<br />

bians, but <strong>he</strong> tries <strong>to</strong> alternate and choose<br />

books that are common and uniting for<br />

both groups. T<strong>he</strong> groups are averaging<br />

around 25 right now but in t<strong>he</strong> group’s<br />

prime at BookStar, t<strong>he</strong>re were often 45 people<br />

present.<br />

His goal is <strong>to</strong> get back <strong>to</strong> that num<strong>be</strong>r.<br />

He also expressed wis<strong>he</strong>s <strong>to</strong> expand t<strong>he</strong> gay<br />

and lesbian section at Davis-Kidd (which is<br />

w<strong>he</strong>re <strong>he</strong> also works).<br />

T<strong>he</strong> Lambda Book Group meetings are<br />

simple. Once t<strong>he</strong> book is decided, Patrick<br />

puts <strong>to</strong>get<strong>he</strong>r a list of discussion questions<br />

for t<strong>he</strong> meeting. T<strong>he</strong>n everyone gets <strong>to</strong>get<strong>he</strong>r<br />

<strong>to</strong> discuss t<strong>he</strong> work with his or <strong>he</strong>r fellow<br />

bookworms. Patrick said t<strong>he</strong>y are very informal<br />

and all are given a chance <strong>to</strong> talk if<br />

t<strong>he</strong>y so wish.<br />
