SoulForce Equality riders<br />

travel for justice<br />

A busload of GLBT youth hit t<strong>he</strong> road this Spring<br />

in protest of repressive policies on college and university<br />

campuses. T<strong>he</strong> 50-day event is intended <strong>to</strong> garner<br />

support for GLBT equality in admission and ot<strong>he</strong>r<br />

policies primarily in place at military and religious<br />

education institutions around t<strong>he</strong> nation.<br />

T<strong>he</strong> 35 young adult mem<strong>be</strong>rs will visit 19 campuses<br />

w<strong>he</strong>re known homophobic policies are in place. All<br />

campuses on t<strong>he</strong> itinerary ban t<strong>he</strong> enrollment of<br />

GLBT students.<br />

“At all schools we seek dialogue <strong>be</strong>cause we have an<br />

important message <strong>to</strong> share,” said Jacob Reitan, Co-<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r of t<strong>he</strong> Soulforce Equality Ride.<br />

Tour s<strong>to</strong>ps include campuses in Virginia, Tennessee,<br />

Oklahoma, Tex<strong>as</strong>, California, Utah, Colorado,<br />

Minnesota, Illinois, Pennsylvania and New York.<br />

Haven Herrin, co-direc<strong>to</strong>r of t<strong>he</strong> Equality Ride,<br />

noted, “We are a diverse group racially, religiously, culturally,<br />

geographically and in terms of age (17-28). All<br />

riders engage in this journey voluntarily.”<br />

T<strong>he</strong> Council for t<strong>he</strong> Christian Colleges and<br />

Universities (CCCU) w<strong>as</strong> t<strong>he</strong> kick-off site for t<strong>he</strong><br />

national journey on March 9. President Bob Andringa<br />

of CCCU h<strong>as</strong> spoken <strong>to</strong> t<strong>he</strong> group and promises<br />

open communication.<br />

Fifteen of t<strong>he</strong> nineteen<br />

schools are in t<strong>he</strong><br />

CCCU group.<br />

‘We have <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong>lieve,”<br />

everyone can engage in<br />

this discussion with<br />

peace, love and civility.<br />

results from our genuine<br />

desire for negotiation.<br />

involving and educating<br />

communities. T<strong>he</strong> call for justice must come from all<br />

people, across t<strong>he</strong> nation.”<br />

Angel Collie is t<strong>he</strong> only trans-identified person on<br />

t<strong>he</strong> ride. “I <strong>be</strong>lieve I have a unique perspective <strong>be</strong>cause<br />

people tend <strong>to</strong> treat me differently <strong>be</strong>cause I do p<strong>as</strong>s<br />

so well, especially among girls.”<br />

P<strong>as</strong>sing <strong>as</strong> a male seems <strong>to</strong> make people more comfortable<br />

in talking <strong>to</strong> him.<br />

“I also find t<strong>he</strong>re is more power in my personal<br />

s<strong>to</strong>ry than scriptural or factual re<strong>as</strong>oning,” Angel said.<br />

“I also <strong>be</strong>lieve my perspective will <strong>be</strong> <strong>he</strong>lpful <strong>be</strong>cause<br />

t<strong>he</strong>re are not many people even on t<strong>he</strong> ride who<br />

understand trans issues. T<strong>he</strong>refore, I can raise aware-<br />
