Spring brings time of renewal and art<br />
by Cosmo Shitay<br />
Columnist<br />
Spring is in t<strong>he</strong> air and it’s time <strong>to</strong> renew<br />
t<strong>he</strong> pursuit of our p<strong>as</strong>sions in life once<br />
again. It’s like an awakening, a renewal,<br />
with new thoughts, new growth and fresh<br />
joy.<br />
It’s <strong>be</strong>en a sleepy winter and many of us<br />
are more than ready <strong>to</strong> plug ourselves in<strong>to</strong> a<br />
live outlet. We’re all<br />
going <strong>to</strong> die one day,<br />
right? So we should<br />
get out t<strong>he</strong>re and pursue<br />
what we really<br />
want <strong>to</strong> do. T<strong>he</strong>re is<br />
more support in<br />
N<strong>as</strong>hville for t<strong>he</strong> arts<br />
of all forms than t<strong>he</strong>re<br />
ever h<strong>as</strong> <strong>be</strong>en.<br />
What a great foundation<br />
<strong>to</strong> build upon!<br />
I remem<strong>be</strong>r w<strong>he</strong>n<br />
<strong>be</strong>ing <strong>he</strong>re felt <strong>as</strong> if<br />
one were limited <strong>to</strong> a<br />
few choices. Well, that<br />
h<strong>as</strong> changed! N<strong>as</strong>hville<br />
is full of artists–and art<br />
lovers–of all walks.<br />
That works for me. That’s why this whole<br />
art culture thing is growing so f<strong>as</strong>t <strong>he</strong>re.<br />
Without art, and t<strong>he</strong> expression of it,<br />
what would <strong>be</strong> t<strong>he</strong> point of conquering t<strong>he</strong><br />
rest of t<strong>he</strong> world? Art expresses t<strong>he</strong> inexpressible<br />
and t<strong>he</strong> awesomeness of things we<br />
cannot possibly express by ot<strong>he</strong>r limited<br />
means, such <strong>as</strong> words. Don’t words just get<br />
in t<strong>he</strong> way sometimes, anyway? T<strong>he</strong>n why<br />
am I writing this column…with words? It’s<br />
<strong>to</strong> tell you <strong>to</strong> cut off t<strong>he</strong> cable TV, shrug off<br />
t<strong>he</strong> winter cold, get out of t<strong>he</strong> “box” and<br />
see what’s out t<strong>he</strong>re for you, in this big,<br />
huge, wonderful world that is our gift from<br />
t<strong>he</strong> god(s).<br />
Men<strong>to</strong>r somebody, do something you’ve<br />
never done <strong>be</strong>fore, take a risk and break<br />
out!<br />
If you are an artist but don’t show your<br />
work anyw<strong>he</strong>re, t<strong>he</strong>re are organizations out<br />
t<strong>he</strong>re <strong>to</strong> provide an open venue for your<br />
art. For example, Plowhaus Artist’s Co-op<br />
in E<strong>as</strong>t N<strong>as</strong>hville h<strong>as</strong> its own space in which<br />
<strong>to</strong> exhibit. And, t<strong>he</strong>ir artists are on many<br />
different levels of accomplishment, so you<br />
shouldn’t <strong>be</strong> intimidated. For more information,<br />
visit info@plowhaus.com. Anot<strong>he</strong>r<br />
group, Untitled Artists,<br />
is uncensored and you<br />
can e<strong>as</strong>ily participate in<br />
t<strong>he</strong>ir quarterly shows.<br />
T<strong>he</strong>ir Web site is<br />
info@untitledn<strong>as</strong>hville.org.<br />
T<strong>he</strong>re are<br />
more out t<strong>he</strong>re than<br />
just t<strong>he</strong>se two, so start<br />
digging around <strong>to</strong>wn<br />
and many more will<br />
turn up, I <strong>as</strong>sure you.<br />
I suggest that you<br />
visit some of t<strong>he</strong><br />
exhibits and talk <strong>to</strong> a<br />
few participants <strong>be</strong>fore<br />
you decide with whom<br />
<strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> involved and <strong>to</strong><br />
what extent.<br />
Anot<strong>he</strong>r popular way <strong>to</strong> show your art is<br />
at restaurants and clubs. Ple<strong>as</strong>e <strong>be</strong> kind <strong>to</strong><br />
t<strong>he</strong>se art-loving individuals and remem<strong>be</strong>r,<br />
t<strong>he</strong>y operate restaurants that show art; t<strong>he</strong>y<br />
are not galleries that serve food. Three such<br />
establishments are Fido’s and Jackson’s,<br />
both of which are in Hillsboro Village, and<br />
Tri<strong>be</strong> on Church Street. Provence at t<strong>he</strong><br />
roundabout also shows art, not <strong>to</strong> mention<br />
many more restaurants and clubs that span<br />
from west <strong>to</strong> e<strong>as</strong>t N<strong>as</strong>hville and even <strong>to</strong><br />
ot<strong>he</strong>r planets. Trust me–I’ve <strong>be</strong>en! <br />
