While the Army has established <strong>Military</strong> Occupational Specialty (MOS) task sets for each enlisted rank, there are<br />

no prerequisite for what “career skills” each <strong>of</strong>ficer rank should be able to demonstrate. Below you will find recommended<br />

skills and tasks to consider incorporating into your pr<strong>of</strong>essional development program.<br />

education includes the <strong>Military</strong> <strong>Intelligence</strong> Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Defense Language Institute Basic Spanish Course, the<br />

U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the Army War College.<br />

Lieutenant Colonel Orlando Ortiz is the Commander <strong>of</strong> the 303d <strong>Military</strong> <strong>Intelligence</strong> Battalion, Fort Hood, Texas. During Operation Iraqi<br />

Freedom II, Lieutenant Colonel Ortiz served as the Chief <strong>of</strong> Operations, C2, Multi-National Corps-Iraq, and assumed duties as the Chief <strong>of</strong><br />

Operations, G2, upon his return in February 2005. He is a 1987 graduate <strong>of</strong> the Saint Johns University ROTC program and holds an MS<br />

in Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. His military schools include the <strong>Military</strong> <strong>Intelligence</strong> Officer Basic and<br />

Advanced Courses, the Combined Arms Services Staff School, and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.<br />

Major J. Michael McNealy currently serves as the Executive Officer for the 163rd <strong>Military</strong> <strong>Intelligence</strong> Battalion, Fort Hood, Texas. He<br />

previously served in Iraq as the Battle Major <strong>of</strong> the C2 Watch Desk in the Multi-National Corps-Iraq Joint Operations Center. A 1992<br />

graduate <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> Virginia, he also holds a Master’s degree in Information Science from the University <strong>of</strong> North Carolina at<br />

Chapel Hill. His military schools include the <strong>Military</strong> <strong>Intelligence</strong> Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Combined Arms Services Staff<br />

School, and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.<br />

Develop your pr<strong>of</strong>essional book which will include<br />

(but not limited to): Officer Record Brief (ORB), OERs,<br />

command philosophies, awards, orders, etc.<br />

Update and maintain your ORB to include use <strong>of</strong><br />

proper position titles; overall appearance.<br />

Develop a pr<strong>of</strong>essional reading program incorporating<br />

the Chief <strong>of</strong> Staff <strong>of</strong> the Army’s reading list, the MI<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional reading list, as well as recommendations<br />

from the chain <strong>of</strong> command and personal intellectual<br />

initiative.<br />

Write a book review on a quarterly basis.<br />

Create a military journal <strong>of</strong> daily activities to capture<br />

accomplished work, lessons learned, and other information.<br />

This journal may be <strong>of</strong> significant value in later<br />

years when developing younger <strong>of</strong>ficers.<br />

Develop a “how to” on conducting inventories.<br />

Prepare an <strong>Intelligence</strong> OPD.<br />

Develop your anticipated career pathway.<br />

Develop your company command philosophy.<br />

Learn the TDY process.<br />

Develop your S2 survival kit.<br />
