Chapter 5<br />

Maneuver and Mobility Support<br />

MMS, formerly known as battlefield circulation<br />

control, consists of those measures necessary to<br />

enhance combat movement and the ability to<br />

conduct movement of friendly resources in all<br />

environments. These measures ensure that<br />

commanders receive personnel, equipment, and<br />

supplies as needed. MMS is conducted across<br />

the full spectrum of military operations. The<br />

primary focus of MP during MMS is to ensure<br />

swift and uninterrupted movement of combat<br />

power and logistical support.<br />

MANEUVER SUPPORT<br />

5-1. Maneuver is the employment of forces on the<br />

battlefield in combination with fire (direct or indirect) or<br />

fire potential. It is the movement of combat forces to<br />

gain a positional advantage, usually to deliver or<br />

threaten delivery of direct and indirect fires. MP tasks<br />

that support maneuver include—<br />

• MP support to river crossings.<br />

• MP support to breaching operations.<br />

• MP support to a passage of lines.<br />

• Straggler control.<br />

• DC control (refer to Chapter 7 for more information<br />

about DC operations).<br />

SUPPORT FOR RIVER CROSSINGS<br />

5-2. A river is a significant obstacle that may slow, stop,<br />

or impede a unit’s ability to maneuver. Units are<br />
