• Give priority fire, if available, to the disengaging<br />

element to rapidly increase its firepower.<br />

• Begin an orderly movement to successive or<br />

alternate positions.<br />

• Use all available fire.<br />

• Place the fire far enough forward to avoid<br />

impeding personnel leaving the protected<br />

positions.<br />

Place smoke between the delaying force and the<br />

enemy.<br />

• Move into subsequent positions from the rear<br />

andsendaSITREPtohigherHQ.<br />

• Report the delaying force’s arrival to higher HQ.<br />

• Tell the elements left in contact to disengage and<br />

take their next positions.<br />

6-173. If it becomes necessary, replace key leaders, give<br />

crew-served weapons a priority of manning, evacuate<br />

casualties, and redistribute ammunition. Refer to <strong>FM</strong><br />

17-95 for more information on defensive tactics used for<br />

delays.<br />

BATTLE HANDOVER TO A TACTICAL COMBAT<br />

FORCE<br />

6-174. When the combined efforts of the base and base<br />

cluster defense force and the MP response force are<br />

unable to jointly defeat an enemy threat, the operation<br />

becomes the responsibility of the TCF. Coordination is<br />

essential to determine when, where, and how the<br />

response force gives up responsibility for the fight and<br />

theTCFtakesover.TheMPresponseforceandthe<br />

base-defense force will then hand over the fight to the<br />

TCFbyconductingabattlehandover.<br />
