10 the advertizer t: 01505 613340 07731 923970 e: info@advertizer.co.uk Local people ‘Take One Action’ to challenge Climate Change Optical Blog by Kerry Taher, New Vision Opticians At the LEAP stall at Lochwinnoch Gala Day, there were lots of residents and families making climate challenge pledges to ‘Take one Action’ over the next year. Amongst these was LEAP Trustee, Martin Mansell who having been involved in LEAP from its start over 7 years ago was really impressed at the progress that LEAP has made in providing energy advice and supporting the Lochwinnoch community in making personal behavioural changes. ‘Amazing energy, travel, waste and carbon reducing measures have been achieved at a local level and these have contributed to the Greener Scotland and the Climate Challenge Fund agendas and targets each year during the last 7 years.’ Martin said ‘However people still find it difficult to talk about climate change and usually become very defensive and guilty when the subject is raised. My pledge as a trustee of LEAP and as a concerned individual is to continue to talk to more people about climate change so that it remains top of the list for all our futures.’ Help with Macular Degeneration 26th June – 2nd July 2017 marks the 30th anniversary of Macular Week. Macular degeneration is the main cause of sight loss in the developed world and it can leave you and your family feeling isolated and uncertain about the future. Whether you have been recently diagnosed or have a longstanding macular condition, the Macular Society can help and support you in various ways. Attending local groups can help you to understand your condition, come to terms with sight loss, share information about treatment and help you to stay independent. Groups meet often, sometimes with guest speakers, and events, outings and holidays are often arranged. Members can get involved in campaigns and work with local eye care professionals. W@M (Working At Macular, pronounced “wham”) support groups are aimed specifically at younger working-age people with macular issues. If attending a group isn’t for you, Skype groups (video or voice calls) give the opportunity to talk to others affected by macular disease without the need to leave home. Alternatively, there is a telephone befriending service - talking to someone with similar experiences, which has shown to help rebuild confidence. Everyday tasks can be challenging and a source of frustration. The society can arrange to show you daily living guides, gadgets and technology that can help with daily living. There are also two types of seeing techniques that can be taught. If you’re due to receive treatment by injections, the society can put you in touch with a buddy who has already had treatment, for more information and reassurance. A specialist helpline team is available to provide free information, advice and guidance for you, or on behalf of someone with macular disease. There are also professional, accredited counsellors who can provide free and confidential telephones sessions if needed. For more information please call the practice on 01505 614 700.
@GryffeAds www.advertizer.co.uk july 2017 Paisley Townscape Heritage and Conservation Paisley Townscape Heritage and Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (Paisley TH.CARS2) is a building repair and shopfront improvement grant scheme, which aims to improve historic properties and streetscape within the TH.CARS2 area to help regeneration in Paisley. The scheme was launched on the 21st February 2017 and it will run until 2021. Paisley TH.CARS2 is funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Environment Scotland and Renfrewshire Council, and will give grant opportunities to property owners in a defined area of Paisley Town Centre focusing on High St, New St, Shuttle St and George Pl. A programme of Heritage Education, Training and Events will be delivered. The activities will engage diverse audiences with the heritage and culture of Paisley, with an emphasis on learning through making, particularly around traditional building skills and textiles. Under the TH.CARS2 scheme the Building Repair Grants will be available for structural and external repairs to historic buildings, which are still in use, including improvements to shop fronts. Internal repairs are generally not included unless necessary for structural stability. A number of buildings have been identified as Priority Projects due to their listing, status, heritage value, prominence and/or the impact their appearance makes within the TH.CARS2 area. These buildings are the focus for funding. The remaining funds will be made available to other buildings within the TH.CARS2 area. The allocation of remaining funds will be determined by assessment against required criteria. Grants will be awarded in accordance with the terms and conditions of Renfrewshire Council, Historic Environment Scotland and Heritage Lottery Fund. Small Grants and Standard Grants will be available for up to 80% of the cost of eligible building repair work and 90% of the cost of eligible shopfront repairs.
