Tag-n-Track Project update
It’s time for the monthly roundup from Project Officer Hayley Douglas. TnT
is funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, Greater Renfrewshire and Inverclyde
LEADER and Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park.
Project News
What a busy month! We have managed to tag three Lesser Black-backed
Gulls so far and the data has
already started to come in. Two of
our gulls, 10P:C and 9P5C were
caught on the roof of Greenock
Police station and are awaiting to
be named by the local community
the police work with. So far the
data shows that both birds have
completely different foraging habits.
‘10P:C’ likes to go up to the local
primary school to hoover up the
leftovers whereas ‘9P5C’ prefers to
take a tour around the countryside
and feeds in the surrounding fields. After his three chicks hatched his
movements changed again and he has started to head across the Clyde
to feed.
Our third gull, ‘15P:C’, was hand caught at Castle Semple Visitor Centre.
After he was tagged he headed away to Dalry, then to Little Cumbrae
before going to Horse Isle where it looks like he may have a nest. The
tags collect data locations between 10-15 times a day. This means that
our gulls may turn up at a location but we don’t get a data point which is
what happened yesterday when 15P:C was spotted at 6pm feeding at the
quarry pond at Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue along with 100+ other gulls.
It’s amazing what we are discovering at the moment. Three gulls down,
nine more to go.
Do you have a birthday coming up or are you interested in supporting
our gull project? We are offering Gull Adoption Packs where you can
sponsor one of the gulls for £25 and in return you will receive an adoption
certificate, factsheet, monthly email updates and a fluffy gull to call your
own. Look for details on the website or email tnt@clydemuirshiel.co.uk to
find out more.
One of the projects aims is to train volunteers in the use of our camera
traps. The joys of camera trapping are that you never know what you
might capture. We are looking for volunteers to use and monitor our
camera traps for 3 month periods. All training will be provided and it is
something that only requires a couple of hours a week to collect and go
through the footage. If you would like to find out more then please contact
me on tnt@clydemuirshiel.co.uk
Event News
