Kilmacolm Primary
Since our last news we have had 2 sell out
performances of our summer show, ‘Rats
the Musical’. The boys and girls from P4-7
worked so hard to learn their lines, songs
and actions and received rave reviews
from parents and friends. Well done to
everyone and our thanks to the adults who
gave their time to assist in rehearsals, with costumes and face painting.
P6 have been busy over the last few weeks with
Mrs McPherson, learning how to cycle safely before
being assessed for their Bikeability Scotland Award.
The boys and girls have been learning basic skills
e.g. balance, control and making turns, before
moving on to learning basic skills on the road,
including turning at junctions and training on the
road outside the school.
Our school participated in the Inverclyde Million Miles Challenge recently,
walking miles and miles around our MUGA to raise funds for Malawi. The
boys and girls walked a total of 15million steps and received a trophy from
Inverclyde Clyde Council to reward their efforts. Thanks to Miss Grant for
leading the initiative and parents who contributed to our fundraising.
This year we were lucky enough to
receive funding which allowed the whole
school to travel to
Edinburgh Zoo free
of cost. We visited
across two days,
including visits to
see the pandas,
and it is safe to say
that everyone had a super day out. Our thanks to Suzie
Cunningham and ‘Mueller’, for their generosity.
The boys and girls in Primary
6/5 culminated their topic on Titanic with a visit
to The Titanic Experience in Belfast. It was a
very early start and a very late finish but well
worth the long journey. The boys and girls had
an absolutely fabulous day, seeing first hand
all the things they had learned about in class.
Thanks to Mrs McPherson and Mrs Hoodless for
organising and all the parent helpers who also had a great day out.
Duchal Nursery
We have had an action packed summer term, full of fun and learning. We’ve
watched our caterpillars turn in to beautiful butterflies, visited our local
miniature steam railway, helped feed goats and taken some alpacas for a
walk!! As well as sports day and our end of term summer concert, where
the children really excelled themselves with some brilliant performances in
front of a packed audience!
With our extended hours until 3.30pm we really have had a busy 50th year
at Duchal.
It is scary to think that by the time you are reading this, our year will be over
and we will have said “au revoir” to our older children going off to school –
we wish you all lots of luck, please come back and visit us!!
However more importantly the end of term has seen the retirement of Mrs
Jean McCarthy who has been our head teacher for 15 years. We will all
miss her boundless enthusiasm and dedication to every child that has been
through the Duchal red door over the years.
We are however delighted to announce the appointment
of Mrs Judy Ormond as our new Head Teacher, who
will confi dently lead Duchal into it’s 6th decade. With
her years of experience in early years education she
is perfectly suited to deliver the very best start in life to
all our children, and see the nursery go from strength
to strength.
To keep up to date with all the latest news, visit our
website duchal.com and our FaceBook page.
Finally a note from all the children and parents - a
BIG THANK YOU to all our fantastic staff who make
Duchal so much fun, we’ve had a wonderful year.
Port Glasgow High School
English trip to Kelvingrove (By Emily Anderson S2)
Our S2 English class took a class trip to Kelvingrove Museum in Glasgow,
as part of our ‘Scotland’ Unit.
In the course of our visit, we enjoyed the many exhibits and as we ate
lunch, we listened to the organ player as he showed his amazing skills. We
learned about the art and the history of Scotland and visited paintings by
such world famous artists as Salvador Dali. The museum is full of ancient
artefacts and is perfect for a day out, if you want to fi nd out about our
traditions and culture. There are collections from all over the world, not only
Scotland. This trip was so useful in showing us what Scotland was like in
the past, as well as the many famous Scots who have made a success of
their lives. There is so much to learn and take pride in.
The museum is in the west end of the city of Glasgow and has recently
been refurbished. Entry is free and so, many tourists came along to learn
about Scotland. If you go along, I’m sure you will enjoy your time at this
beautiful location!
Million Miles Challenge (By Tammi
Lynne S5)
The pupils of Port Glasgow High
School participated in the Million Miles
Challenge to raise money for Yorkhill
Children’s Hospital. The whole school
joined in on our 4 mile walk, run or jog on
the 21st of April. PGHS sports leaders
organised the event and advertised
it in school and the local community.
Despite the cold and wet day, everyone
got involved. We even had teachers
cycling. It was a day to remember! We
raised a grand total of £413 for Yorkhill
Children’s Hospital.
Skills Academy (By Claire Steele S4)
From the 15th to the 26th of May,
a selection of S4 pupils from Port
Glasgow High school took part
in a Skills Academy, a variety
of workshops which helped us
develop our skills and potential in
areas like employability, hospitality,
digital literacy and teamwork. We
participated in an online health
and safety course which enabled
us to receive a Level 2 Award in
food safety/catering and a Heartstart training program, where we learned
how to carry out CPR and use defibrillators in the event of an emergency.
We also worked on our employability skills and learned what employers
are looking for, which will have an important impact in our futures. We
also worked with our Home Economics teacher and local employers to
develop our skills in hospitality by making a few desirable dishes. Finally
we took part in a variety of team building activities like paint balling, which
we all thoroughly enjoyed and were able to take away something positive
from the experience. Overall, the Skills
Academy was a helpful and enjoyable
experience which achieved its purpose
of developing our many skills in
important areas which we will need in
our lives after school.
