Christian Aid Week 2017
Thank you, Bridge of Weir! The annual Christian
Aid Week house-to-house collection took place from
14 – 20 May. Three churches working together (St Machar’s
Ranfurly, Freeland and St Mary’s); 60 volunteers collectors; 14 volunteer
counters; and, crucially, over 850 generous households in Bridge of Weir ready
and willing to help those in need.
£5,928 was collected. And nearly 60% this total was supported by Gift Aid
declarations, which will generate a further £880.
The origins of Christian Aid lie in the collective effort of Christian churches
throughout the UK to respond to the desperate needs of refugees in Europe
following the Second World War. Christian Aid now operates in 45 countries
throughout the world. It tackles poverty by responding to emergencies, funding
long term development and challenging the unjust systems that make people poor
and keep people poor. Most of its work is done with local partner organisations
which not only have first-hand knowledge of the practical needs of the poor
in their area, but are also able to ensure the sustainability of initiatives to lift
communities out of poverty.
Christian Aid helps people of all faiths or none. It is a signatory to the Code
of Conduct for Red Cross and NGO’s in Disaster Relief which sets international
ethical standards for aid work and, among other things, promises that aid will not
be used to further a particular political or religious standpoint.
Understandably, given the current events in the Middle East, the slogan of
Christian Aid Week this year was: “We’ve been there for refugees since 1945.
We won’t turn our backs now.” Thanks to you, Bridge of Weir certainly didn’t turn
its back!
Thank you again. Your support is helping to rebuild people’s lives.
Bridge of Weir Gala Week lifted everyone’s spirits and
brightened up the village. It was my first year judging the best
costumes and best dressed windows and I very much enjoyed
being a part of the festivities. There were many different
events going on during the week and something for everyone
to take part in so a big thanks to everyone who helped to make
Gala week possible.
This month I was also invited along to Langbank Primary
School, to see their rendition of Oliver. The children were
extremely talented and enthusiastic. There was obviously a
lot of effort put into this by parents, teachers and of course,
the children and it was a great show to watch.
In June I made it along to my first Bishopton and Bridge of Weir Community
Council meetings. A number of issues have been raised and are now receiving
attention. The A761 when exiting Bridge of Weir is causing drivers a lot of concern.
Although it has not been included in Renfrewshire Councils Roads Improvement
Programme, I have ensured that there are plans to make improvements later
on in the year. Several blocked drains and cases of overgrown foliage in Bridge
of Weir have also been reported. There have been numerous reports regarding
damage to cars in the Bridge of Weir Car Park, as well as the lack of available
parking at peak times. The issue of parking has also been raised in Langbank on
Main Road where an increasing number of cars have been blocking pavements
and access points. These complaints are now receiving attention.
My surgery’s are still currently being organised. They will be held on the first Saturday of
the month, however locations are still being finalised. If you have anything you would like to
discuss my contact details are as follows. E-mail: cllr.natalie.don@renfrewshire.gov.uk Tel:
