Exactly one year ago, in our July
update, Colourful Kilmacolm
had to report the theft of some
plants from the Port Glasgow
layby. Unfortunately we have
again suffered, this time from
vandalism. Our gardeners spent a
busy morning towards the end of May
preparing the summer displays at our various sites
around the village. When we had finished, the
large planters in the Piazza were already looking
good, with carefully placed trailing plants around
the edges, non-stop begonias next, then taller
ones rising up to the half-standard hollies in the centre which we have been
gradually shaping into balls over the last 18 months. The overall effect was
obviously lost on those who, on the last weekend of May, decapitated 4 of
the 6 hollies. If the perpetrators are now feeling any remorse, Colourful
Kilmacolm is always ready to accept financial donations. £100 would cover
the damage.
Elsewhere our displays are beginning to show colour. At the moment one
of the best areas is the large embankment at the Pullman, shown here. Of
course a little more sun would help, but let’s hope that is still to come.
As mentioned last time, our next task is to complete the planting at the
improved Market Place area. It is still quite a shady spot but we hope to
Kilmacolm Horticultural
Society
A great day out to Crarae Gardens and
Inveraray for members of Kilmacolm
Horticultural Society was enjoyed in
June. Now we look forward to the
annual Flower Show. The date this
year is Saturday 2nd September, venue is the New Community Centre,
Kilmacolm, the Show opens to the public at 11am, with prizegiving at 3.30pm.
Schedules detailing the classes in various Sections, Flower, Vegetable,
Pots and Planters, Novices, Kitchencraft, Floral Art, and Childrens sections
are available now. Please phone for a copy to Jill Russell, Show Secretary,
on 01505 872393, or ask at the Centre for more details. With a growing
number of younger gardeners enjoying green-fingered success we are
hoping for more entries into the Novices classes. Help is given with the
simple staging process when you come along on the night before the Show
with your exhibits. Give it a try, be proud of your gardening skills and show
off your results to the admiring public at Kilmacolm Flower Show.
be able to choose plants that will tolerate some
shade and yet still give a good show.
Colourful Kilmacolm is open to all. If you are able,
you can choose to be an active gardener, helping
when you can with looking after the displays,
but we also welcome non-active members. The
very modest £5 annual subscription supports our
efforts.
Membership forms can be downloaded from our
Fantastic Family Storytelling Fun
Fantastic family
storytelling fun was had
on 28th May Kilbarchan
Smile’s Gateway
Garden Party with wellknown
Kilbarchan based
storyteller Anne Pitcher. Sheltered safe
from the wind and
rain under a gauzy
gazebo, the children were delighted with Anne’s
many puppets, props and curious soundmakers as
they encountered a grumpy great big giant, the king
and queen of the fairies, magical scarecrows and
many more story characters. All Anne’s stories were
themed
around
growing and
around recycling
and re-using. Also on the day
there were stalls manned by local
community groups. All enjoyed the
free hot dogs and drinks throughout
the day. The Gateway Garden was
created from an old petrol station
and is an amazing achievement
for the dedicated Kilbarchan
Smile team for the community of
Kilbarchan - thanks go to them for a
wonderful day. This event was part
of Lilifest - a festival held in the run
up to Lilias Day.
