MESSAGE FROM

When looking back at 

term 2 I am ecstatic 

about the wonderful 

achievements reached by 

our teachers and learners. 

We have witnessed, 

to name but a few: 

• U.10 and u.12 netball 

teams went through to 

the play-offs; 

• U.14 netball team ended 

their season as league 

winners; 

• U.15 and first rugby 

teams are both in the Blue 

Bulls final to be played at 

Loftus on Saturday, 29 

July 2017; 

• We had two rugby players 

in the final trials for the 

u.13 Craven week team; 

• U.16 hockey girls ended 

their season as league 

winners – they will now 

play in the play-offs; 

• First team hockey boys 

ended their season as 

league winners; 

• Boipelo Moloisane (u.14) 

achieved provincial hockey 

colours; 

• Ansune de Witt achieved 

National colours for 

Archery; 

• Ruach Jacobson achieved 

National colours for Air rifle 

shooting; 

• Jeanna Bissett and Jacques 

Mouton are performing at 

the World Championships 

in Los Angeles; 

• Both our Primary and 

High school drama groups 

auditioned for and will 

perform in the State Theatre 

in August at the Tshwane 

Youth Arts Festival; 

• More than 77 learners 

took part in the Pretoria 

Eisteddfod and we already 

have 9 category winners 

from our school; 

• 31 learners were selected 

to represent our school at 

the Curro National 7’s; 

• MasterChef was 

successfully hosted by the 

Castle; 

• The first Roodies Run&Ride 

event took place with more 

than 280 participants. 

I would like to thank all the 

staff, learners and parents for 

a very successful term – I am 

grateful for everyone’s input 

and dedication in this regard. 

The building at our new high 

school has commenced in 

full force and we are well on 

track to make the deadline for 

completion on 1 November 

2017. The high school will 

open in January 2018 on the 

new premises. I extend a 

word of encouragement and 

thanks to all our grade 12 

learners and teachers who 

will continue with their winter 

school during the holidays. 

A special word of thanks 

to my management team 

for their hard work over the 

past few months. A word of 

thanks to Elna and Alta for 

their leadership at the Castle 

and Primary school. I would 

like to specifically thank Mr 

Izak Nagel who acted as 

Operational head at the high 

school. Izak did a sterling job 

amongst his full academic 

workload and extra-mural 

activities. I am blessed to have 

great leaders like him amongst 

my management team. 

I would like to wish 

everyone all of the best 

during the winter holidays.

So, we arrive at 

the end of another 

term. The second 

quarter is usually 

shorter due to the examinations 

being written and we can confidently 

say that we are still on our way 

to reaching our goals set for our 

Grade 12 students, as well as our 

other grades. I cannot emphasize 

enough that every child in Curro 

Roodeplaat is important to us. I 

purposefully write “child” and not 

the politically correct “student” 

because in our small family here at 

Roodeplaat, everybody has his/her 

role to play - child, parent, and 

educator. 

I would like to thank Mr Niemand, 

who has given me the opportunity to 

act as Operational head over the 

past three months. The freedom and 

trust he has placed in me to do 

things my way has greatly challenged 

me and increased my capacity as a 

pedagogue and educator. The wisdom, 

compassion and patience that he 

always reveals, creates a safe 

environment for every teacher and 

student in this school.

HIGH SCHOOL 

I thank the management for their 

support and specifically Ms Alta 

Theunissen and Ms Elna Groenewald, 

the respective heads of the primary 

and play school. Their patient ear 

and compassionate counsel brought 

me a lot of calm. 

I would also like to thank you as parents for your kindness and patience 

with the transition phase of our high school. We look forward to the 

coming of our new Operational head, Mr Pieter van Wyk. I believe that 

his experience will take our school to new heights. In our next newsletter, 

at the end of July, you will get to know him better

HIGH SCHOOL 

During the third term there will 

be cross country as well as all 

the winter sport play-offs. We 

also start with our triathlon 

exercise and we invite all pupils 

to come and practice with us. Not 

only do we want to cultivate a 

healthy lifestyle and love for 

sport, but it will also serve 

as a pre-season practice for 

our athletics that start in the 

fourth term. 

All Grade 10 parents must take note of the 

Grade 10 Compass Camp, which takes place 

in the third term from 7-10 September. The 

letters were distributed to the pupils with 

all the necessary details.

After the game against Affies, 

the first team went through to the 

playoff round where they played 

against Tygervalley for the overall 

winners of the league. 

Please note that the second term’s 

reports will be handed out only

winners for the 2017 league. We 

want to thank everyone for their 

contribution that led to the 

success of the team.

In the blink of an eye we have 

reached the midyear mark 

already! Time passes so 

quickly. And just as quickly, our 

kids grow up…From my office 

window I look upon the quad 

where I see learners playing, 

laughing happily or just sitting 

peacefully under the pretty 

blue Curro Roodeplaat 

umbrellas during break times. 

And I know… our Roodies 

are happy! 

The term was filled with 

activities and had many 

highlights. We think of 

the Roodie learners who 

excelled at the Pretoria 

Eisteddfod (see article 

under culture). Then there 

was the music evening 

where learners blew us away 

with their musical talents. 

Young orators surprised us 

with their convincing abilities 

and tongue-in-the-cheek 

sayings. We end this term with 

a first for Curro Roodeplaat – our 

very own “Run and Ride”! 

Thank you to every coach, 

player and parent for a season’s 

commitment towards netball and 

rugby. This also includes the mininetball 

and “bulletjierugby”. Good luck 

to all the Curro National 7’s participants! 

Thank you to the cross country coaches 

and athletes for their hard work this term 

as well. 

Congratulations to teacher Felicia Bam 

and her senior drama group on 

being selected to take part in 

the Tshwane Youth Arts Festival 

during the month of August. 

Please take note of term 3’s 

full day educator training on 

Monday, 31 July. The primary 

school will therefore be closed 

for all grade R-7 learners.

Music 

Evening 

An excited audience enjoyed a 

spectacular Music Evening on 7 June 

in our school hall. 

The evening hosted a variety of performing 

arts, with our enthusiastic learners 

showcasing their musical talents in piano, 

singing, guitar, percussion and dancing. 

Spanning group 4 to grade 11, over 80 

learners warmed the hearts of the audience with their skilful performances of 

musical works. Well done music learners!

ur Foundation Phase Internal 

public speaking event took 

place this term. All participants 

were well-prepared and delivered 

speeches of outstanding quality. 

Unfortunately there could only be 

3 winners. Congratulations to the

All art entries end 

on Wednesday, 26 July. Any 

learners from grade RR – 7 

are thus welcome to still have 

lots of fun during the holidays

of art works at Ms Mariska 

Duvenhage (Gr. 3A). Entry 

fees must be handed in to 

Ms Duvenhage in a clearly 

marked envelope no later 

than Friday, 11 August. We 

are very excited to let you 

know that there are quite a 

few learners who already paid 

their art entry fees and are 

thus already entered.

Our MasterChef 

was a tasteful event, all 

thanks to you! A huge word of 

thanks to Paul and Nataline Duarté 

who sponsored all the meat for the 

day. 

First and second 

prizes were sponsored by 

Renske de Klerk (RDK photography) 

and Etienne Engelbrecht (Taekwando 

trainer) and Christelle Whelan from Stella 

Ceramics sponsored our third prize. Thank 

you to Monique Swart who took the initiative

The little ones 

have survived their measles 

vaccinations, and it was a challenge for 

all of us! The Department of Health did 

an excellent job. Thank you also to Ester 

Schreuder who came to assist; it was 

a big help. 

MUSIC EVENING 

We are proud of our little ones who showed their talents at the Autumn 

Music evening. You are all golden stars! Johnny sang with enthusiasm and 

we were extremely proud of him. 

The forms were signed, the donations were packed and 

the bus was full of petrol. Group 4 and 5 were so excited 

to go hand out all the presents and sweetie packets to 

“Little Hearts”. We say THANK YOU once again to you as 

parents. Our little ones are learning a valuable lesson. Thank 

you to each and every one who gave a donation to make 

this possible.
