Spring has finally arrived in the Great Lakes region and trial
season has begun. In just a few short weeks SEMASA will hold its
39 th Annual Great Lakes Special Stockdog Trials on May 27–29.
This event will be held at Imagine Farm, the home of Marc, Becky,
and Caleb Bailie, and consists of 6 arena trials with cattle, sheep,
and ducks. Many special awards will be presented including new
awards for High Combined Open Junior and High Combined Junior
Handler. This year, we’ll again be offering a buckle in addition to
the Gerald Dennison trophy to the dog and handler team that earns
High Combined Aussie over all six trials. At last year’s Great Lakes
Special Stockdog Trials held on May 28–30, 2016 the Gerald
Dennison trophy and buckle were awarded to Becky Bailie and
WTCH Starstuff’s Killian Qwick.
The Fall Classic Stockdog Trials were held on October 7-9,
2016, with a farm trial with sheep and five arena trials with cattle,
sheep, and ducks. The Traveling Jug was awarded to Becky Bailie
and Starstuff’s Gonna Be Qwick OTDcsd for earning High
Combined Australian Shepherd. Linda Donahue’s Border Collie
XPS Niamh were HIT in the farm trial and Karen Wimbush’s
Wranglin’s Kiawe were HIT Aussie.
SEMASA once again donated a beautiful buckle to the ASCA
Nationals held in Albany, OR that was presented to the High
Combined winner in the Stockdog Finals, owners Diana Land/
Sherry Baker and WTCH-M Sliding S Land’s End Sure Shot
PATDcs OFTDsc DNA-VP. The club also held a summer stockdog
training clinic presented by Larry Painter and hosted by Karen
Wimbush.
SEMASA would like to congratulate the following club
members for their notable achievements this past year:
• Sue Kelly and WTCH Just Plain Rock Grinder AFTDs,
“Rocky,” earned OFTDdm and AFTDc.
• Karen Wimbush and WTCH Just Plain Tribute to Wranglin,
“Trib,” earned the ATCH title.
earned the RE, GS-O, RS-E, and JS-E titles.
Sadly, last fall, long-time SEMASA member Linda Mahoney
passed away. She had held numerous positions within our club and
had been Chair of the Stockdog Committee. Everyone will miss
the knowledge she had about the SDC rule book. Linda will be
missed for her humor, her sarcasm, and the support she gave to us.
We lost a good friend and someone dedicated to the working
Australian Shepherd.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the judges,
members, exhibitors and volunteers that made our 2016 trials safe,
successful, and fun. A special thank-you to the Bailie family for
hosting the trials. We hope you’ll join us for some fun and friendship
on September 15-17, 2017 for the Fall Classic Farm and Arena
Trials to be held at Imagine Farm, Manchester, MI. We’re planning
a farm trial with sheep and five arena trials with cattle, sheep, and
ducks. New this year will be awards for HC Open Junior and HC
Junior Handler in addition to a buckle being awarded to HC Aussie.
Until then we wish you a happy and healthy 2017!
