nosework and agility with, and she has kept
in touch for years after adoption, sending
beautiful pictures and updates and having
an uncanny knack for doing so when we are
feeling low about things. Rescuers live for
these happily ever after stories, because
they are living reminders of why we do
what we do.
While this adopter would be a great
home for many Aussies, there are always
some exceptional cases that require special
adopters. Dogs with medical conditions or
physical issues need people who can handle
these challenges, both in accommodation
and financially, if regular treatment or
medications are involved. Behavioral
quirks are also a concern. ARPH doesn’t
take dogs with a bite history or serious
aggression issues, and we recognize that
most adopters want a pet and not a project,
but some dogs simply have some
idiosyncrasies. Another Aussie I placed
needed to be an only dog. He didn’t have
any interdog aggression (he lived with
several other dogs in his foster home), he
simply preferred to be alone with his
humans. The lovely lady I described earlier
would have offered a nice home, for
example, but he would not have enjoyed
sharing it with her other dog. In his case,
his perfect adopter turned out to be a trucker
who wanted a cab buddy to ride with him.
He is with his human companion, who
knows his preferences and they live a good
life together.
I would like to make a donation of $
have been concerned that there isn’t someone home all day or
they’re unable to be with the dog 24/7 like the two adopters I
mentioned above. My personal explanation is that in this day and
age, most folks have to work to earn the price of dog food, and it’s
really how they incorporate the dog into their lives that’s important.
Aussies don’t make good décor, they need to be part of the family.
If the adopters can keep their dogs healthy, happy, and properly
stimulated, that’s the key. I adopted a puppy once to a young lady
that lived in an apartment and was a student on top of working a
job. She had, and followed through, on a plan for her dog that
involved training, exercise, and activities together and that pup has
now grown into a well-adjusted, well-mannered, beautiful Aussie.
My feeling is that the perfect adopter varies for each dog. What
might be the ideal home or situation for one Aussie could be
disastrous for another. That is why getting to know both ends of
the leash and careful matching is so important, and the foundation
for a successful placement.
