The month of August is 

known for a number of 

projects and activities 

focusing on women. We 

are privileged to have 

celebrated formidable 

women in our school and 

community in conjunction 

with our Hannes van Wyk 

women’s evening. We 

would like to thank all 

our mothers who acted 

as hostesses and guests 

at this prestigious event. 

Once again, you proved 

why we should cherish 

mothers and women in our 

society. 

Both our primary and high 

school have achieved great 

achievements over the 

past few weeks. You can 

read more about this in the 

respective sections by our 

Operational heads in the 

relevant newsletters. Our 

high school rugby results as

well as our primary school’s 

cricket results deserve a 

special mention. Watch this 

space – we are moving! 

However, I would also like 

to mention the extraordinary 

work being done in our cross 

country, hockey and minihockey 

at our primary school 

– well done to all the coaches 

and players! We have already 

started with our pre-season 

athletics training at our high 

school and we invite all our 

athletes to join! 

I had the privilege of watching 

our primary school’s 

performance at the State 

Theatre during the Tshwane 

Youth Arts Festival. This was 

a truly unforgettable moment! 

Congratulations to Ms. Felicia 

Bam and learners. Our high 

school drama group also took 

part in the Arts Festival and 

deserve congratulations for 

their wonderful performance. 

Thank you to Ms. Emilje 

Smit and our high school 

learners. The Curro Cuesta 

also saw the show-casing of 

the wonderful talents of our 

learners. 

Please take note of the 

section further on in the 

newsletter relating to 

absenteeism from school 

and specifically from tests 

and/or exams. This is very 

important information and we 

will not deviate from the policy 

in the future. Our school 

management will attend a 

school planning weekend on 

1 September. As we involve 

more staff members than 

just the school management 

team, this will impact on our 

Friday academic schedule. 

In celebration of spring 

day we are also having the 

spring festival on our school 

grounds hosted by Lewende 

Woord. We have therefore 

decided to close school on 

Friday, 1 September at 12:00 

for all our learners. 

For the sake of practicality, the 

newsletter will be published 

in the middle of each month 

from now on, and not at the 

end of the month, as before.

High appenings 

Pieter van Wyk - Operational head 

What a privilege to be 

welcomed as a member 

of the Curro family by 

learners, staff and parents 

respectively. From the onset 

there was a receptiveness 

and a promise of working 

together. How could you 

then not drive to school early 

in the morning with a smile 

on your face? 

I am married to Renee 

who has been teaching at 

Midstream College since 

2008. My eldest child, 

Divan is currently in grade 

12 (Grade 12 parents I can 

relate) and my youngest, the 

apple of my eye, Leandrie 

who is currently in grade 10. 

During my seven-year period 

at Southdowns College I 

received a good grounding 

and understanding on what 

private schooling entails 

and the rigours there of. It 

is a fact that private school 

education is expensive and 

that service delivery is nonnegotiable. 

However, there 

is a misconception that I feel 

strongly about. Ownership 

from our parent community, 

teachers and learners to 

follow through on what we 

start is imperative. In saying 

that, we have a lot of learners 

that commit to teams and 

leagues but then pull out 

before completion or miss a 

fixture purely because they 

are going away for a weekend 

with the parent’s consent 

which leaves the team in an 

unexpected disposition. We 

as Curro Roodeplaat then 

appear disorganised and 

lax. It leaves a bad taste 

in the mouth of potential 

clients. Please adhere and 

commit to the programme 

that we send out weekly. The 

broader programme for the 

term will in future be sent out 

in advance for your planning 

benefit. 

In the first three short 

weeks, I was amazed with 

all the accolades across the 

spheres of activities and to 

touch on a few: the u/15 and 

1st rugby sides winning their 

respective leagues in the 

greater Pretoria area. Thus 

leading to the two sides 

participating in the Virseker 

Trophy play offs. The 1st 

team yet again played in the 

semi-finals which meant that 

they were one of the top four 

teams in the competition. 

Well done to the mountain 

bikers on being highly 

successful during their last 

two excursions. The u/16 

hockey girls deserve a 

special mention on winning 

their league for Northern 

Gauteng Small Schools. 

Currently the cricket season 

is well on its way and well 

done to the 1st team on their 

recent win against Hoërskool 

Montana. The soccer 

players are playing every 

week and congratulations 

to them on turning the 

result from last year against 

Curro academy around. 

The Equestrian team is also 

making themselves known 

by receiving great accolades 

in the top competitions. 

Although my vehicle to reach 

children was mainly sports 

driven, I have a real soft 

spot for the fine arts. “Life is 

a Cabaret old chum” to use 

a phrase from a musical. 

It is about balance and the 

appreciation of excellence. 

August is the month of 

culture at our school and the 

past week we held auditions 

in all aspects of the arts. On 

the back of Curro Cuesta

that took place the previous 

week. Feedback from all 

these performances was 

heart-warming. My biggest 

congratulations go to each 

and every one that did 

take part regardless of the 

accolades. We are going 

to stage a Gala evening 

celebrating the talents of our 

learners. Please be on the 

lookout regarding the date 

for this prestigious evening. 

Our drama group will also 

participate in the Tshwane 

Youth Arts Festival being 

held in the State Theatre. 

My challenge in future is to 

write as much on culture as 

on sport. 

Congratulations are in order 

to the newly elected prefects. 

This group of energetic and 

wide eyed learners with 

whom I had the privilege 

on spending time with, are 

going to help me make a 

building into a school in 

2018. By the way, do yourself 

a favour and have a look at 

the progression of the new 

school, it is phenomenal. 

My best wishes and prayers 

to our matriculates on 

the dawn of the Prelims. 

This should be your only 

priority and if you put in 

the time now, the harvest 

will be so much greater. 

Thank you very much to all 

the parents that attended 

parents evening. We really 

appreciate your involvement 

especially in the light of our 

partnership. The rest of the 

school experienced a natural 

occurrence in the drop of 

averages from term one to 

term two purely because of 

smaller assessments in term 

one compared to exams in 

term two. What I don’t except 

is the margin especially 

in certain subjects. I am 

currently investigating this 

phenomenon and putting 

measures in place to prevent 

it from happening again. 

Sooner rather than later 

we are going to start 

with a big drive to 

address what our 

learners look like 

in conjunction 

with the “Parent 

Action Committee”. 

N o r m a l 

communication will 

be sent to parents 

but the responsibility 

of the day to day 

communication will 

be with your son or 

daughter. If a learner 

should miss a formal 

assessment, test or exam, 

a doctor’s note would be the

only excuse in doing so. We 

must start functioning like a 

private school on all levels. 

Many thanks to the Executive 

head Mr Ferdi Niemand 

for all his guidance and 

leadership as well as the 

greater management team 

of the school, parents and 

learners. Last but not least 

thank you to the staff that are 

really putting in a big effort. 

Finally I would like to invite 

you as a parent to come and 

introduce yourself and share 

in my open door policy.

RUGBY 

The term started at a very quick pace for our sport 

at Curro Roodeplaat. On 29 June, both of our high 

school rugby teams (u.15 and 1st team) competed 

in the Blue Bulls Small School league finals. This 

was the first time in the history of the school that 

we achieved this feat. 

On the day, both teams faced Maragon Olympus. 

After the u.15 team lost 38 - 12 against Maragon 

in the league phase, they rectified this by winning 

the final 8 - 7. Our first team ended unbeaten 

during the league phase and they won the final 

with a score of 22 - 12. 

Equestrian 

SPORT 

During the holiday, five of our 

learners participated in the Gauteng 

Championship where they achieved 

the following results in their respective 

disciplines:

Both these team played in the Virseker trophy; with 

the u.15 team falling out against Curro Bankenveld 

in the quarter-finals. Our first team progressed to 

the semi-final match, where they unfortunately 

lost 27-16, in an extremely well contested match 

against Morgenzon Landbou Akademie. 

Congratulations to Ciarra Vorster who 

is chosen for the National team. 

SOCCER 

During the third term, our high school plays in the PPSSSL. This league has grown to 14 

teams since 2016. We are very excited for this season, seeing as our u.15 team ended 

second in 2016. The results, up to date, are shown below:

HIGH SCHOOL 

We are very busy on the culture front this term. 

Ten teams participated in the Oppie tong af-orators 

competition during the week 31 August to 4 September. We 

are very proud of our learners who have done excellent work. 

The weekend of 18 and 19 August, some of our learners took 

part in the Curro Cuesta. We had 41 entries in total. Please 

see the next newsletter for the learners’ achievements. 

Ever wondered how many teeth a mosquito has? These are 

some of the questions that arose in the Junior City Council’s 

general knowledge quiz. Twenty-three of our smartest 

learners took part in the quiz. 

We are also very proud of our drama group. They are invited 

to participate in the Tshwane Youth Arts 

Festival on 24 August in the State Theater. 

Our culture week, during which learners 

can boast with their singing, drama and 

dance talents, is around the corner. We 

will host a gala evening after completing 

the auditions so that you, as parents, can 

share in our phenomenal talents.

t is already end of August – unbelievable 

how fast time went by! As a school we 

have accomplished many highlights the 

past month… 

We are proud of our learners who have 

excelled on cultural and sporting levels. 

This includes cross country, tennis, hockey 

and mini-hockey, cricket, equestrian, 

Curro Cuesta, eisteddfods and the 

Tshwane Youth Arts Festival. Read more 

about these achievements in the different “In life, if you want more,

Thank you to all learners, coaches and 

parents who make a difference and add value to our beautiful school. 

Please note that all participants must wear the correct sport clothing 

for matches as communicated by the coach or organiser. 

On the academic side we are full steam at work with class projects and some term tests 

have already been written.

PRIMARY 

Scene 

Please note that, according to our code of conduct, we need a medical certificate when 

your child is absent during a term test in order to avoid a 0 mark. A sick test will then be 

scheduled. Should your child be absent during class assignments/projects, please inform 

the teacher immediately and make alternative arrangements. If this is not adhered to, the 

learner will also receive a 0 mark. 

We kindly request that doctors’ appointments be scheduled during the afternoons. 

Sponsor forms for our yearly soapbox derby have already been handed out to you 

child. Thank you for the funds that have already been paid in. There is stiff competition 

between the classes and learners are looking forward to the weekly announcement of 

the frontrunners! A new addition to the soapbox day is the carnival rides that will definitely 

add a whole new atmosphere to the day. 

We would like to bid Mr Pieter van Wyk (new Operational head at the High School) a 

warm welcome to the Curro family.

We are very proud of the learners who took part 

at the Curro Cuesta on 18-19 August. 

In total, Curro Roodeplaat won six gold 

medals, seven silver medals and two bronze 

medals.

Cricket 

At the start of the new term, our cricket also officially got underway. The primary school had a 

very successful tour, where we played against tough opposition. The rigorous tour competition is 

currently paying dividends when considering the great results we achieved thus far. See all the

We have 3 teams entered into the tennis league 

this term. They are making good progress so 

far. The results for the first three matches are

Our Prayer Moms need moms to 

help with their successful puppet 

show. They only perform four times a 

year and practice for an hour or two 

before each performance. Please 

contact Anne (082 567 9709) if you 

are interested; we need you! Our 

little ones love and enjoy the puppet 

show so much. 

Our final outreach project for this 

year with Little Hearts is to take 

them to the zoo. There are 59 little 

ones and we need R50 per child. If 

you would like to bless one of them, 

please pay your contribution in at 

reception (Veronica). 

We have lots of exciting things 

planned for this term. Please take a 

look at our calendar for the term. Our 

IAAF athletics event will definitely be 

the highlight!
