’’
I’ve been doing arts and crafts using different
techniques since I was a child and
I want to keep developing in my field. Ten
years ago I started as a substitute at the
Gräsa arts and crafts centre, and the temporary
post led to a permanent position as a children
and youth textile work instructor. My job description
includes planning clubs and working
as an instructor. I also take part in youth work
through training and meetings.
Our largest target group is lower and upper
comprehensive school students. I feel that
teaching them handicrafts provides an important
counterbalance to school work and electronics.
Handicrafts help to develop coordination,
creativity and thinking. I hope that our enthusiasts
will dare to put their new skills to good
use at home.
Handicrafts activities started at Gräsa more
than 37 years ago in the form of a woodwork
club, which was followed by textile work and ceramics
clubs. Nowadays, we have three material
groups: woodwork, metalwork and engine
clubs; ceramics and silver work clubs; and arts
and crafts, textile work and sewing clubs. We
plan the course contents ourselves, but we also
receive a lot of new ideas from the participants.
Every year, Gräsa’s clubs are attended by more
than a hundred children and youth. In addition
to this, we also organise mini courses and
weekend workshops. The participants only pay
for the material costs, and everyone is welcome
to join. There are still places available.”
