The route is steep and taxing, but for those with the stamina to complete it, the Chief promises the reward of spellbinding views and brilliantly clear waterfalls that cascade over the rocks. Do this hike and trust me, you’ll sleep well that night! We stayed up just long enough to dine on beer-battered chicken wings and lamb burgers smeared with rich fruit chutney at the Howe Sound Brew Pub, washing them down with a flight of the brewpub’s superb beer. The next day we headed to Fergie’s, a trailer-turned-restaurant on the banks of the Cheakamus River and the favorite brunch venue for Squamish locals. We’d heard the salmon eggs benny was legendary and the atmosphere convivial. We left happily sated, knowing both rumors were accurate. The cold was taking its toll on our last day in town, so we opted for two indoor entertainment venues. At the West Coast Railway Heritage Park we stepped onto old locomotives as we toured Western Canada’s largest collection of heritage railway equipment. We marveled at a Canadian Pacific rail car built in 1890, its sleek, mahogany wood-paneled interior a sign of the luxury enjoyed by its business travelers. We read of railroad robberies and heists in the mail car, on which meticulously sorted mail made its way around Canada. A few minutes’ drive south down Highway 99, we toured another historical site: the Britannia Mine Museum, where 17 percent of the world’s copper was mined between 1900 and 1970. The low price of copper forced the mine’s closure, and it became a museum where visitors in hardhats could ride trains deep into the belly of the mountain side. Here, we learned of the hazardous work conditions endured by miners, whose days were filled with darkness, noise and heavy labor. We headed home on the Sea-to-Sky Highway, a route that constitutes one of the many highlights of a Squamish getaway. The circuitous highway runs between West Vancouver and Whistler, delivering inspirational views of the mountains on one side and the Pacific Ocean, dotted with the Gulf Islands, on the other. It’s a quintessential British Columbia experience and the kind of drive that leaves you grateful for the beauty and bounty Pacific Northwest—and longing to return. 36 | WINTER <strong>2018</strong> ontrakmag.com
