SUMMER COLLEGE PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL<br />

STUDENTS<br />

Instruction by <strong>LCAD</strong> degree-program studio faculty is<br />

offered each summer to students who are considering<br />

attending college to become artists or designers. Units<br />

earned for these courses can be transferred to a college<br />

of the student’s choice. Colleges have accepted up to<br />

six semester units toward a student’s studio course<br />

requirements.<br />

ORIENTATION<br />

Orientation is mandatory for new students and takes<br />

place approximately one week prior to the onset of each<br />

semester. Orientation offers students the opportunity to<br />

make new friends and to meet fellow students, staff and<br />

faculty. Orientation also enables students to familiarize<br />

themselves with the college’s facilities and services and<br />

to review their academic and financial arrangements.<br />

ACADEMIC POLICY<br />

CONDUCT<br />

All students are expected to be familiar with and<br />

are subject to the provisions and policies contained<br />

within the Student Code of Conduct/Student Handbook<br />

(emailed to all students and available on the <strong>LCAD</strong><br />

website). As members of the <strong>LCAD</strong> community, students<br />

are expected to behave at all times in a manner that<br />

respects the privacy and integrity of all individuals and<br />

property while on campus or attending <strong>LCAD</strong>-related<br />

functions off-campus.<br />

A student who persists in conduct disturbing to others,<br />

who is repeatedly offensive in any manner or who<br />

exhibits immoral and/or criminal behavior shall be<br />

subject to review and possible dismissal without refund<br />

of tuition or fees.<br />

Smoking is prohibited in all buildings. Because our<br />

location poses a serious fire hazard, students are<br />

requested to smoke outdoors only behind Studio 7 and to<br />

thoroughly and safely extinguish all smoking materials.<br />

Use of drugs or alcohol on campus is prohibited.<br />

PROGRAMS OF STUDY<br />

Laguna College of Art and Design is comprised of the<br />

School of Fine Arts, the School of Visual Communication<br />

and the Division of Liberal Arts and Art History.<br />

<strong>LCAD</strong> offers the following accredited programs:<br />

MASTER OF FINE ARTS (MFA)<br />

The student receives a master’s degree.<br />

POST-BACCALAUREATE<br />

The student completes a prescribed course of study.<br />

BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS (BFA)<br />

The student receives a baccalaureate degree.<br />

CERTIFICATE<br />

The student is awarded a professional undergraduate<br />

certificate.<br />

Students can obtain a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in the<br />

following:<br />

• Painting<br />

• Drawing<br />

• Art of Game<br />

• Creative Writing<br />

MASTER OF FINE ARTS (MFA) REQUIREMENTS<br />

1. Acceptance to the College through the Admissions<br />

process.<br />

2. Declaration of major<br />

3. Successful completion of 60 units in specified<br />

courses and fulfillment of the following distributed<br />

requirements:<br />

• 48 units in studio work<br />

• 12 units in Liberal Arts and Art History classes,<br />

including the completion of a thesis<br />

4. Maintenance of an overall cumulative grade-pointaverage<br />

(GPA) of 3.0 or better.<br />

Students can complete a Post-Baccalaureate in:<br />

• Drawing + Painting.<br />

POST-BACCALAUREATE REQUIREMENTS<br />

1. Acceptance to the College through the Admissions<br />

process.<br />

2. Successful completion of 30 units in specified<br />

courses and fulfillment of the following distributed<br />

requirements:<br />

• 24 units in studio work<br />

• 6 units in Art History<br />

3. Maintenance of an overall cumulative GPA of 2.75<br />

or better.<br />

Students can obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts or<br />

Certificate in the following majors:<br />

• Animation<br />

• Creative Writing<br />

• Drawing + Painting<br />

• Drawing + Painting with Sculpture Emphasis<br />

• Game Art<br />

• Graphic Design + Digital Media<br />

• Graphic Design + Digital Media with Action Sports<br />

Emphasis<br />

• Illustration<br />

• Illustration with Drawing + Painting Emphasis<br />

• Illustration with Entertainment Emphasis<br />

• Illustration in Entertainment Design<br />

The Liberal Arts and Art History courses required for<br />

the BFA are taught by the Division of Liberal Arts<br />

and Art History. The Foundation courses (required by<br />

all programs) are taught by professional artists and<br />

designers appointed by the Department Chairs of<br />

Drawing + Painting and Visual Communication.<br />

BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS (BFA) REQUIREMENTS<br />

1. Acceptance to the College through the Admissions<br />

process.<br />

2. Declaration of major.<br />

3. Successful completion of 122 units in specified<br />

courses and fulfillment of the following distributed<br />

requirements:<br />

• 77 units in studio work, including units in<br />

Foundation as dictated by the major.<br />

• 45 units are Liberal Arts classes, including 15<br />

units in Art History.<br />

4. Maintenance of an overall cumulative GPA of 2.0 or<br />

better and a minimum GPA of 3.0 in major. Receipt<br />

of a grade below a “C” in a major-specific course<br />

requires a student to retake said course until a<br />

grade of “C” or better is earned.<br />

CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS<br />

1. Acceptance to the College through the Admissions<br />

process.<br />

2. Declaration of major.<br />

3. Successful completed of 79 units in specified<br />

courses and fulfillment of the following distributed<br />

requirements:<br />

• 77 units in studio work including units in<br />

Foundation as dictated by the major.<br />

• 2 units in English Composition with a grade of<br />

“C” or better.<br />

4. Maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0 in your major. If<br />

you receive a grade below a “C” in a major course,<br />

you’ll need to retake the course until you achieve a<br />

“C” or better.<br />

DECLARING A MAJOR<br />

To earn an MFA, BFA or a Certificate a student must<br />

declare a major (and, if applicable, a minor) by the start<br />

of the second semester. To declare a major (or minor),<br />

a student must complete the Declaration of Major (or<br />

Minor) Form with the Registrar. Contact the Registrar’s<br />

Office to make an appointment.<br />

DUAL MAJORS<br />

In order for a student to double major, the student<br />

must complete all required studio courses except for<br />

those courses in which each major requires the same<br />

course (those courses can be used towards both majors).<br />

However, students will be required to complete Senior<br />

Portfolio 1 and 2 for each major, as well as Senior<br />

Capstone 1 and 2 for each major.<br />

CHANGING A MAJOR<br />

Students wishing to change their major must have a<br />

3.0 GPA and must do so before completing 45 units.<br />

The procedure for changing a major requires:<br />

• discussion with the Chair of the prospective major<br />

• discussion with the Chair of current major<br />

• submission of the form “Petition to Change Major<br />

• submission and successful passing of a portfolio<br />
