Sumner resident Bridget Coles drove away in her new Holden Spark<br />

on Monday thanks to Redcliffs New World. The car was one of many<br />

Biggest Ever Car Giveaway. More than $2 million worth of cars were<br />

won, which equates to one vehicle for every New World store.<br />

SCIRT spends<br />

less in peninsula<br />

BANKS PENINSULA has<br />

received the least funding<br />

for infrastructure repairs out<br />

of any ward in the city from<br />

the Stronger Christchurch<br />

Infrastructure Rebuild Team.<br />

While SCIRT only has five per<br />

cent of its infrastructure repair<br />

work to go, they have released<br />

information on where the $2.2<br />

billion has been allocated within<br />

the city.<br />

The Banks Peninsula Ward has<br />

received $52m, the lowest amount<br />

allocated to any ward, while the<br />

Hagley-Ferrymead Ward has<br />

received $544m – the second<br />

highest in the city.<br />

In Banks Peninsula, retaining<br />

walls have eaten up $43m of the<br />

$52m spent.<br />

The biggest cost driver in<br />

Hagley-Ferrymead has been<br />

wastewater infrastructure which<br />

has cost $350m.<br />

SCIRT puts Banks Peninsula’s<br />

small expenditure in comparison<br />

to other wards down to<br />

population.<br />

About 8580 people live in<br />

Banks Peninsula, compared to<br />

49,000 in the Hagley-Ferrymead<br />

Ward.<br />

SCIRT said there are fewer<br />

underground pipes in the Bank<br />

Peninsula Ward because there are<br />

fewer people living there than in<br />

other city council wards.<br />

Also, before the earthquakes,<br />

there had been an infrastructure<br />

renewal programme in the Banks<br />

Peninsula Ward by the city<br />

council.<br />

More than half of SCIRT’s<br />

work has been in the Burwood-<br />

Pegasus Ward, where damage to<br />

wastewater pipes and<br />

pump stations was more<br />

extensive, ultimately amounting<br />

to $680m.<br />

When SCIRT finishes the citywide<br />

infrastructure repairs, the<br />

city council and the New Zealand<br />

Transport Agency will carry out<br />

the remaining road work.<br />

SCIRT is in its final three<br />

months of work.<br />

Restoring Port Saddle<br />

DOZENS OF school children,<br />

volunteers and Lyttelton Port of<br />

Christchurch staff turned their<br />

fingers green for a restoration day<br />

on Port Saddle.<br />

The school pupils weeded,<br />

mulched and planted in the newly-established<br />

lizard habitat area,<br />

while other volunteers helped<br />

with gorse control and weeding<br />

on the lower slopes.<br />

Herpetologist Marieke Lettink<br />

was also on-site to speak about<br />

the lizards that live in the area<br />

and their habitat.<br />

The Port Saddle project covers<br />

a 17ha area of LPC-owned land<br />

backing onto Urumau Reserve,<br />

above the eastern edge of Lyttelton<br />

township.<br />

The land has been identified<br />

for community recreational<br />

use, ecological protection and<br />

enhancement of the indigenous<br />

flora and fauna.<br />

This long term project is being<br />

undertaken by LPC with the<br />

Banks Peninsula Conservation<br />

Trust which works to protect and<br />

enhance indigenous biodiversity<br />

found on Banks Peninsula.<br />

biodiversity enhancement, and in<br />

cycle and walking tracks within<br />

the area, will provide a great environment<br />

and better connectivity<br />

for Lyttelton locals – human and<br />

fauna. This is something that the<br />

community clearly told us they<br />

wanted as a part of the Lyttelton<br />

Port Recovery Plan process and<br />

it is great that we are now underway.”<br />
