PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN SCIRT spends less in peninsula • By Annabelle Dick BANKS PENINSULA has received the least funding for infrastructure repairs out of any ward in the city from the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team. While SCIRT only has five per cent of its infrastructure repair work to go, they have released information on where the $2.2 billion has been allocated within the city. The Banks Peninsula Ward has received $52m, the lowest amount allocated to any ward, while the Hagley-Ferrymead Ward has received $544m – the second highest in the city. In Banks Peninsula, retaining walls have eaten up $43m of the $52m spent. The biggest cost driver in Hagley-Ferrymead has been wastewater infrastructure which has cost $350m. SCIRT puts Banks Peninsula’s small expenditure in comparison to other wards down to population. About 8580 people live in Banks Peninsula, compared to 49,000 in the Hagley-Ferrymead Ward. SCIRT said there are fewer underground pipes in the Bank Peninsula Ward because there are fewer people living there than in other city council wards. Also, before the earthquakes, there had been an infrastructure renewal programme in the Banks Peninsula Ward by the city council. More than half of SCIRT’s work has been in the Burwood- Pegasus Ward, where damage to wastewater pipes and pump stations was more extensive, ultimately amounting to $680m. When SCIRT finishes the citywide infrastructure repairs, the city council and the New Zealand Transport Agency will carry out the remaining road work. SCIRT is in its final three months of work. Restoring Port Saddle • By Annabelle Dick DOZENS OF school children, volunteers and Lyttelton Port of Christchurch staff turned their fingers green for a restoration day on Port Saddle. The school pupils weeded, mulched and planted in the newly-established lizard habitat area, while other volunteers helped with gorse control and weeding on the lower slopes. Herpetologist Marieke Lettink was also on-site to speak about the lizards that live in the area and their habitat. The Port Saddle project covers a 17ha area of LPC-owned land backing onto Urumau Reserve, above the eastern edge of Lyttelton township. The land has been identified for community recreational use, ecological protection and enhancement of the indigenous flora and fauna. This long term project is being undertaken by LPC with the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust which works to protect and enhance indigenous biodiversity found on Banks Peninsula. “I’m very pleased to see our biodiversity enhancement, and in cycle and walking tracks within the area, will provide a great environment and better connectivity for Lyttelton locals – human and fauna. The Lyttelton match was played in warm weather, with the match being closely contested until the last quarter, when Norths (Titahi Bay) took control and won the match 39 to 10. The Lyttelton team took confidence from the match and trained hard for the return match in Titahi Bay the following weekend 16th-18th September 2016. In typical Wellington weather, windy and wet, played with both teams showing good skills under the conditions with Lyttelton having the edge in the Forwards and Norths (Titahi Bay) in Backs. Although, Norths (Titahi Bay), with the wind in the first half got out to an early lead the Lyttelton team fought hard and attacked the opposition goal line for the majority of the second half to lose the match 26-10 to a spirited and good defensive Norths (Titahi Bay) team. The match was watched by a good crowd with 19 Adults from Lyttelton travelling up to Wellington to support the team.
