Heathcote ward – community board
Craig Todd
Having lived in the Heathcote ward the majority
of my life I have been lucky to enjoy the benefits
this community has to offer. With greater powers
for decision making being handed to community
boards, if elected I would work hard, listen to and
make sure the community voice is heard in regards
to facilities and infrastructure to achieve the best outcome for all.
I believe I have the passion and experience to make a valuable
contribution to the well-being and benefit of our community.
After six years of Government-appointed commissioners
at the helm, people can once again cast a vote for
representation onto the Environment Canterbury. The
area is represented by the Christchurch Constituency, with
four candidates to be elected.
Dr Cynthia
Roberts
(People’s
Choice):
I am an ecologist
and I live on
the estuary. I
am passionate
about protecting Canterbury’s
drinking water, our waterways
and our coastline. Like us,
our native species depend
on a healthy, flourishing
environment to thrive. In
standing for ECan, I want to
use my scientific skills to find
solutions to more sustainably
managing our environment
including improving our
public transport. I bring to
the role skills and qualities
gained as a parent, a teacher, in
tertiary management, running
an ecotourism business and as
a science advisor for DOC.
Bay Harbour News asked city councillor candidates
their views on a topical issue within the community. This
week, we ask Heathcote ward city council candidates
what they think the city council should do in response to
homeowners’ pleas to remove coastal hazard information
the Coastal Hazards Assessment Report.
Elections 16
City councillor Paul Lonsdale: Residents and ratepayers need
to be assured that I am working at city council level on this issue. It
was very positive that the mayor met with members of Christchurch
Coastal Residents United recently. We are now working together
around the whole issue of coastal hazards going forward. The issue
of coastal hazards is a serious one for Christchurch and coastal
residents. The Tonkin & Taylor report was subjected to a second
expert peer review which found problems with aspects of the report
and recommended changes be made. It is clear that the scientific
experts believe that the report as it currently stands requires further
research and work. We need to ensure that the information that we
use is the correct information and currently this is not the case. I
am committed to working towards ensuring that any coastal hazard
information used is the correct information.
City councillor Sara Templeton: Climate change and
subsequent impacts of sea level rise are going to be one of the most
important issues for the next city council to address. Open and
transparent communication with the wider community is going to
be essential. While there is vocal opposition to the information being
on LIMS there are also many thousands of people who haven’t had
the chance to express an opinion and there are many who realise that
issues such as coastal inundation and erosion cannot be ignored.
I have not seen the current wording, but the city council is legally
obliged to identify a hazard on a LIM if it is aware of one. This is to
protect future owners of properties. Coastal hazards are an issue
around the country and a more consistent approach is needed. A
National Policy Statement should be in place and the Government
need to step up and start discussions on one.
Jetty decision
tomorrow
• From page 1
“The trust is proposing we
rebuild the jetty in the same
position and in the same manner
that it would be a completely
new structure on top of the old
one. It would have significant
advantages like it will need less
maintenance in the years to
come,” said Mr Jackson.
The city council has no money
to undertake the repairs so
residents requested city council
support to restore the jetty in a
community-led project.
The trust was set up in April
last year with a panel including
a land surveyor, a civil engineer
and a lawyer who are investigating
methods of restoring the
jetty and a fundraising strategy.
“The make up of the trust is
what gave council the confidence
in the first place to back it,” he
said.
If the preferred proposal is
accepted, the trust will buy the
jetty off the city council for $1,
undertake the restoration, before
selling it back to the city council
for $1.
The city council has attributed
$535,000 to go towards the cost
of fixing the jetty.
If the proposal to sell the jetty
is approved, the trust will then
look at fundraising the remaining
cost of the restoration.
